Water Polo Week 3
Click on the headline above for a link to the Wild Knights water polo website.
The Wild Knights girls Varisty team is an awesome 7-0. They won the Viators invitational. This week it was fun to see the Wild Knights shutout Vernon Hills and to see Liz in the field, scoring three of her own.
Looking forward to play at Palatine and at Glenbrook South on Monday and Tuesday next week.
Water Polo Week 4
Wow... Girls Varsity ranking has risen to #14
And Monday night brings another victory, this time at Palatine 18-3. It was good to see the scoring spread among 8 girls. Allie had a nice skip-in goal, LD another impressive backhand, and Liz K. had several nice steals. Rose had good saves in a shut-out quarter, letting LD play the field. Many of the goals had slick assists with some crisp passing. Keep your eyes open and see the whole pool.
Tuesday, the train keeps rolling with a 16-7 victory at Glenbrook South to bring the Wild Knights record to 9-0.
The BIG test is Monday against #10 rated, St. Ignatius. Though they are 8-5, their victories include #7 rated Loyola and #17 Naperville Central. Their losses include powerhouse teams like #1 Fenwick and #4 Stevenson. They will be ready to play, but the Wild Knights need to come with confidence and commitment. Defense should make the difference.
Another Ignatius Game Report From www.ilpolo.com:
St Ignatius Denies Prospect/Wheeling's Perfect Season
By Aaron Brown
Wheeling, IL -- St Ignatius started the week off by handing Prospect/Wheeling their first loss of the season on Monday night in a 10-5 victory. Nora Kennelly scored five goals for the Wolfpack and Ann Carney made eight saves and allowed only two goals through the first three quarters of action in the win.
Ignatius wasted no time from the start, as Nora Kennelly scored her first goal from two meters out just fifteen seconds into the game. Carney made a save on the Wild Knights next possession, leading to Kennelly's second goal from two meters on a pass from Yadi Leon. Prospect/Wheeling cut the lead in half with a goal from Laura Hineman, who came around a pick to score from the point to make it 2-1. Prospect/Wheeling looked strong early, as goalie Liz Dix made a brilliant save on Meg Lenahan's breakaway opportunity to keep the score close in the early stages of the period. But the Wild Knights could not contain Kennelly, who added two more goals from two meters out before the end of the quarter to give the Wolfpack a 4-1 advantage.
In the second quarter, Lenahan gave the Wolfpack a 5-1 lead after a brilliant spin move led to a easy goal. Dix made a save on Kennelly's shot from the right wing on Ignatius' next possession, but Kate Brankin scored on another assist from Leon on a two-on-one breakaway to give the Wolfpack a 6-1 lead midway through the second period. In the final minute of the quarter, Kennelly scored her fifth goal of the first half from the point to keep Ignatius in control by a score of 7-1 at halftime.
Dix made a save on Kennelly's breakaway opportunity to start the second half, giving Prospect/Wheeling a chance to turn things around in the later stages of the game. But Kennelly assisted Leon on a two-on-one breakaway goal and Meredith Messerle scored a goal from seven meters out to put Ignatius ahead 9-1. Prospect/Wheeling's Ali Luft finally beat Carney with a laser from the right flat to cut the lead to 9-2 before the period ended.
Kennelly replaced Carney in goal in the fourth quarter, and Prospect/Wheeling was able to take advantage with three straight goals to slice into the lead. Luft scored her second goal in the first minute of the period to make it 9-3, and Beth Jacobs took a pass from Hineman at two meters and beat Kennelly to the right corner to make the score 9-4. Jacobs returned the favor two minutes later, assisting Hineman on a driving goal to make the lead 9-5 with just 2:50 remaining. Lenahan made sure Ignatius did not let up, as she scored her second goal from seven meters out to seal a 10-5 win for the Wolfpack.
Dix made nine saves in the loss for Prospect/Wheeling, while Carney had eight saves along with two steals for St Ignatius.

Water Polo Week 5
Monday: St. Ignatius Educates Wild Knights
The Wild Knights are 90 and ranked 14th of 57 teams in the state. But they havent played any team ranked higher than 18th. Though most of the games had been dominated by the WK, their opponents were generally not the cream of the crop. St. Ignatius had moved up to be ranked #9 from #10 the previous week. They had been playing top ranked teams all year. It was time to see what the Wild Knights were really made of.
In their first possession, the St. Ignatius water polo team scored from the offensive hole. And they did it 3 more times before the Wild Knights could answer. Iggies ohole was impressively strong willed and forceful. The first half was definitely a learning experience for the girls. Whenever the WKs had the ball it seemed like they were double teamed and the long shots were not going in. When Iggie had possession, they seemed to have someone open. St. Ignatius had positions, plays, power in the water, power on their shots, and confidence that the Wild Knights had not seen before. St. Ignatius had not come to Wheeling just to play, their attitude and aggressiveness showed they were here to win. There was a double ejection and, in video replay, it looked like the Saint was consumed by the devil. Perhaps their player should have been removed from the game for brutality. After two periods, WK 1, St. Ignatius 7.
But there are 2 more periods to play and the Wild Knights were not hiding, They were learning. New defensive strategies were tried and worked. Offensive plays started to click. The WKs were no longer watching, they were playing, and with a vengeance. The water was white with activity. Though it was enough to turn the tide of the game, the Wild Knights outscored St. Ignatius in the second half 43 for a final of 510. It was a hard fought battle and WK will be ready for a rematch
Tuesday: Wild Knights are back on their winning ways with a 17-2 victory against Barrington. Katelyn with 5, Alli and Laura 4 each and Bethany had 2. Great to have Patti back from Y Nationals.
Saturday: Northside Prep held the WK to a 2-1 score for the first period. But the WK erupted for 7 goals from six girls in the second. The plays and movement started to payoff. The defense began to click. There were some nice passes, but lacked consistency and ball handling still left a bit to be desired. It was great to see so many different players enter the water and make contributions. Nice goaltending with 12 saves between both net nurses. Final score 19-5 with a five week record of 11-1.
Water Polo Week 6
Monday: Hersey at Wheeling. There was almost a scoreless first period with very tight defense by both teams. Laura finally scored on the sixth shot by the team. Hersey only got three shots on net. The Wild Knights were most productive in the second period with three goals. Halftime score 4-0. In the second half, Prospect/Wheeling's defense held fast and Liz's goalkeeping frustrated the Huskies. Three more scores made the final 7-0. Liz had an outstanding night with 21 saves and several more shots that were just barely off the mark. Offensively, she also had four assists for the night. And no one who saw it will forget the pool length shot that came from Liz's hand and off of Alli's head. It was lucky for the Husky goalie that it was right at her. What a surprise. The Huskies, perhaps energized by their senior recognition night, never let up and had their biggest threats with 8 shots in the fourth period. A Husky shot from the right side was deflected by Liz and then was floating toward the left corner as she quickly dove across the goal mouth with the ball half way in. But the Wild Knights were determined and had the team working on all cylinders; great defense (Patti had Jenni tied up all night), excellent passing (Liz laid a 50 footer right between Alli's arms), good movements on offense and backup coverages on defense. Very nicely played!!! (12-1 for the season, 6-0 in conference)

WildKnights Girls defeat Fremd
At Wheeling last night a battle royal was seen as Fremd faced the P/W WildKnights.
Halftime score 1-1.
In the 4th period P/W had a 3-2 edge until Fremd broke a swimmer loose to score on a breakaway against Liz. But this goal was answered by Lauren within 20 seconds from 3 meters out. Fremd came back again with a beautiful centering pass that gave their O-hole half an open net. But again Lauren in the middle lays back and floats a perfect shot over the Fremd goalie's leap within 30 seconds. Outstanding defensive efforts by Bethany and Patty (1 goal, 4 assists). A truly exciting game and the reason we watch water polo.
Final Score P/W 5 over Fremd 4.

WildKnights pick up where '05 left off
BY KEN KEENAN
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR
Continued success appears to be in the cards for the Prospect-Wheeling co-op water polo program, as the boys and girls teams both return several players from what were strong 2005 campaigns for each.
On the girls side, the WildKnights finished 28-6 overall last year, including 10-0 in MSL play and 4-0 in the MSL East, good for a conference championship. In postseason action, Prospect-Wheeling made it all the way to the sectional finals, losing to Stevenson. The team began the '06 season with wins in each of its first two matches, beating Hoffman Estates 12-2 March 7 and nipping Fremd 5-4 two days later.
"We've had two successful years in a row, but now we want to make State," said WildKnights head coach Shayna Mortensen, who lost only three seniors to graduation. "There's definitely a winning history, and a sense of pride. So every year, you hope the girls still here pick it up. We've got a lot of illnesses right now, and we have some girls out with age-group swimming still going on. But once we're healthy, I hope we all meld together and become the great team I think we can be."
Tops among the returnees are three seniors, each an all-conference and all-sectional selection last season. Goalkeeper Liz Dix (Prospect) took that one step further, making second-team all-State as well. The others are Patti Blatter (Wheeling), who plays offensive point, and winger Bethany Jacobs (Wheeling). Dix, who runs the offense from the back, scored two goals in the opener and one against Fremd, while Blatter tallied five against Hoffman and one vs. Fremd.
"Liz is great in the goal. She's got great reflexes, and she can move out," Mortensen said. "She's just a super athlete who keeps the girls motivated and focused. She has such knowledge of the game, so she's like a coach in the water. She reads teammates' reactions and what opponents might do. Patti really worked hard in the offseason. She's a really good ballhandler who knows how to move the ball and shoot, and she's very competitive. Her knowledge of the game is outstanding, too. Bethany's strongest attribute is defense. She has offensive capability, but her main role is as a super defender. All the way around, she's a great kid who holds herself to a high standard inside and outside the pool."
Six other veterans are also back in the fold: junior wings Lauren Fairburn (Prospect), Kristin Burke (Wheeling) and Amy Warner (Prospect); juniors Julie Rendino and Emily Schiavone (both Prospect) in the defensive hole; and sophomore winger Sarah Sohn (Prospect).
"Fairburn is such a scrapper. She fights and fights, and does a great job getting goals in scrambles and off of loose balls," Mortensen said. "Burke is a former softball player, so she's got a great arm, and she plays defense real tough. Warner does a great job getting open and working our offense. She's a good swimmer with a good eye for the goal. Rendino is tall (6-foot) with real long arms, and she's very good at out-maneuvering the other team. Schiavone is a real tough defender and a good hustler with a good knowledge of the game. Sohn has great speed and great endurance -- versatile with good swimming ability."
Rounding out the roster are newcomers Lindsay Mills (Wheeling), a sophomore and back-up goalkeeper; junior wings Katie Bechtel and Anjelica Staniszewska (both Wheeling); junior Stephanie Khacterian (Wheeling) in the offensive hole; and freshman winger Molly Nordyke (Prospect).
Prospect-Wheeling returned to action against Conant, on the road Tuesday (past deadline) and will host Barrington (at Wheeling) at 4:30 p.m. today.
Regarding the boys team, Prospect-Wheeling finished 17-10 overall last season, posting an 8-2 mark in the MSL and 4-0 in the MSL East for a league crown. The WildKnights lost to Evanston in the sectional semifinals.
"It was a very good season," said head coach Dick Mortensen, Shayna's husband. "We had a lot of seniors on that team and they created a lot of opportunities. Now we move on."
And they are on the move, opening the '06 season with a 4-2 record, including a 2-1 mark during the Glenbrook South Invite Friday and Saturday. Prospect-Wheeling beat Libertyville 14-6, lost to Loyola 15-6 and then defeated Hersey 4-3 in the tourney's third-place match.
Pacing the squad is a quintet of veteran seniors, led by goalkeeper Jeff Powers (Prospect), an all-conference choice last year.
"Jeff has two MSL East titles under his belt, and he's extremely competitive," Mortensen said. "He gets very upset when someone invades his 'house' back there. He knows the offense and defense like the back of his hand, and basically runs the offense from the goal. He's got like a sixth sense, and he continues to improve. He really is the whole package."
Fresh off his second straight trip to State as a swimmer, Prospect's Andrew Bengtsen is back for his third varsity go-round as a WildKnight. Offensively, the versatile Bengtsen -- an all-conference and all-sectional selection in '05 -- has been on fire in the early going this year, scoring 18 goals in the team's first three games.
"Andrew can play wing, the 2-meter set, defensive hole. He's an all-around player, and because of his speed he can do that," Mortensen said. "When he came in two years ago, he didn't know the game. Now he knows the game, and that's why his scoring has gone off the chart."
Fourth-year senior Oliver Smidt (Wheeling), a 2-meter defender "is very precise, very clean," Mortensen said. "He usually shuts down the opposition's best guy. And he's very analytical, an astute student of the game."
Winger Aleks Burvikovs (Prospect), another four-year vet, scored five goals in the team's first three games, adding another three during the GBS Invite. Classmate Ryan Spacone, a winger, has also returned with a bang. He scored the game-winner against Hersey on Saturday, one of his 13 goals on the day (18 total).
"Aleks brings a great outside shot," Mortensen said. "And he's a big boy, so people can't get around him. He brings toughness -- you can't push his buttons. Ryan's got a flame-thrower for an arm. He's so powerful, he takes shots you can't see coming out of his arm."
Returning as sophomores are wingers Eric Maczko (Wheeling), a State qualifier in swimming, and Matt Reiner (Prospect) -- as well as sophomore Sean Hansen (Prospect) and senior Ben Brodner (Wheeling). Top newcomers include senior winger Chris Powers (Jeff's twin brother), junior Ade Nolla (Wheeling) at 2-meter set and sophomore winger Tim O'Grady (Prospect).
"We want to win the East for a third year in a row, and set ourselves up for a good seed in sectionals," Mortensen said. "These guys want to prove that we can win without the top guns from last year. They want to write their own history. If we gain more experience, and everybody plays to their potential, we should be able to reach our goals."

From the Herald March 19 (Boys)
Wheeling / Prospect looks sharp
By Bill Swick
Daily Herald Sports Writer
The Wheeling/Prospect boys water polo team engineered a complete effort offensively and defensively during Saturdays nonconference meeting with McHenry.
Its nice to see everybody back, said Wild Knights coach Dick Mortensen. Weve been playing with spare parts never a complete unit. It was nice to see we came out as a complete unit today.
That effort showed at both ends of the pool as the Wild Knights captured a 15-5 win.
Leading the way was Andrew Bengtsen, who consistently got open and took good shots to wind up with 7 goals. Bengtsen was also the first to give credit to his teammates.
A lot of guys played and a lot of guys got experience on the varsity level, said Bengtsen, who earlier this week tied the Wild Knights single-game scoring record with 10 goals against Barrington. We played better than we have been. Were showing signs of improvement.
We really took advantage of our opportunities and it showed on the scoreboard.
Ryan Spacone also had a big day, scoring all 4 of his goals in the first quarter when the Wild Knights (6-3) went ahead 6-0.
Ryan Spacone stepped up a lot, Mortensen said. Hes come a long way since last year. He proved today that Andrew doesnt have to be the main guy.
Defensively, the Wild Knights held McHenry scoreless until midway through the second quarter.
The Warriors had little success against goalie Jim Powers, who collected
15 saves in three quarters of work.
He was like a wall today, Mortensen said. He stopped everything that came at him.
In the fourth quarter, backup keeper Andrew Acosta turned away 6 Warriors shots.
Also scoring for the Wild Knights were Erik Maczko, Oliver Smidt, Chris Powers and Sean Hansen.
Billy Dobrowski scored 3 goals for McHenry, while teammate Dusty Lang made 9 saves in goal.

March 23 - in the Herald (Girls)
First to add my own comments-In the last three games the WildKnights have only given up one goal. Totally awesome!! Yes, the goalies have played impressively. In the last periods of the Palatine game there were several shots that required a huge reach to save. But also the team is playing some GREAT defense. To average less than 2 goals a game over 7 games is unheard of in water polo. Keep up the outstanding play. Here is what the Herald had to say.
Girls water polo
Wheeling/Prospect d. Palatine:The Wheeling/Prospect girls water polo team seems like a team that has it all except for a loss.
The Wild Knights had a solid effort on Wednesday against Palatine and held the Pirates scoreless in a 9-0 Mid-Suburban crossover win.
A 5-0 run set the pace in the first quarter, when Wild Knights leading scorer Patti Blatter (4 goals) scored twice. Lauren Fairburn, Liz Dix and Kristin Burke also added early girls.
I play defensively, mostly, said Blatter. Im fortunate to have a good goalie she saves my butt a lot.
Dix (11 saves) and sophomore Lindsey Mills (5 saves) split the goal-tending duties for the Wild Knights (7-0).
We played like weve been playing the last few games, said Dix, whose team has only allowed a couple of goals in its last four games. (Palatines) shots were strong but the defense held.
The Pirates (1-5) put a lot of shots on goal down the stretch courtesy of Erin McCabe, Liz Morlock, Jaime Guiliano and Leighan Leitgeb. But Dix controlled them all.
I think they played fantastic, said Palatine coach Kara Schneider. (The Wild Knights are) a really, really strong team. We took tons of shots on goal. Our girls are stepping it up and improving every single game. As a coach, if they improve every game, Im happy.
Palatine keeper Rose Heidmein made 8 saves.
I thought we played really well, said Blatter, who was pleased to see teammates Bethany Jacobs and Sarah Chaippe also get in on the scoring. Bethany had a good shot. It was good all around. Its good when we can get more than one person scoring.
Blatters efforts didnt go unnoticed by coach Shayna Mortensen.
I think she had a good game, she said. Liz (Dix) also had a good game and both of them together ran the game. Pattis like a quarterback setting things up.

March 23 - Pirates get away with victory
Thursday night the WildKnights ventured to Palatine to face the MSL leading 6-1 Pirates. The Pirates jumped out to a lead that they never gave up. But the WildKnights gave them a game to remember, constantly fighting and scraping for every ball and opportunity. Final score 7-8. This game should be a big confidence builder for the WildKnights.
And in the Herald:
by Bill Swick
Host Palatine opened its Mid-Suburban boys water polo crossover against Wheeling/Prospect with a 3-0 run. Although the momentum shifted a few times in the defensive struggle, the Pirates held on for an 8-7 victory.
"We did fine up until halfway through the third and then they got 3 goals on us," said Palatine coach Joe Grzybek. "It's been like that - momentary lapses - and the other team takes advantage." Mitch Tucker and Chris Walocha led the Pirates (5-0) with 3 goals apiece. Walocha scored twice during Palatine's early run. Tucker and Skylar Davis each scored a pair of goals during a 4-0 Pirates run in the middle of the game.
The Pirates were able to limit the Wild Knights' shots, especially those of Andrew Bengtsen, and Grzybek praised the defensive efforts of Tucker and Mike Nocella.
"Every game we're talking defense," said Grzybek. "We're getting there, although some games aren't as much of an improvement."
The WildKnights trailed 7-2 with 2:31 left in the third quarter when Bengtsen scored the first of his 4 goals. Just over 30 seconds later, Bengtsen tipped in a pass intended for Palatine keeper Spencer Blackham (8 saves) to cut the deficit to 7-4. Before the end of the third quarter, sophomore Erik Maczko scored again to bring the Wild Knights within 2.
"We're definitely improving," said Wheeling/Prospect coach Dick Mortensen, whose team was without standouts Oliver Smidt and Ryan Spacone (1 goal) for part of the third quarter. "In the third quarter, I thought we played our best with two injuries and got 3 goals." Both players returned to the game in the fourth quarter, as Wild Knights continued to chip away. Midway through the fourth after another Pirates goal by Walocha. The Wild Knights' Aleks Burvikovs scored his second goal to make it 8-6. Bengtsen made things interesting down the stretch when he converted a pass from Spacone that cut the WildKnights' deficit to 8-7. But neither team scored on the next two possessions and the dock ran out. Wild Knights keeper Jeff Powers turned away 12 shots in the match.
"Every kid when I talked to them said 'I made this mistake' and 'I made that mistake,' " Mortensen said. "They're shouldering the blame as a team. (Palatine) definitely knew the matchups.
"Our mistakes killed us. Palatine cashed in on our mistakes and we just didn't cash in on theirs. Palatine is a good team. They've been our Achilles' heel over the last four years. But were getting closer."

WildKnights Victorious at SeaLion Invite
The Wildknights worked hard to take FIRST place at the St. Viators Invite. Their only loss was to St. Viators, which left Huron (MI), WK and Viators with 4-1 records. Using goal differential, The WildKnights were placed in First. This recognized their outstanding defense.
Friday night began with a bang as the game with York became very physical. That continued with York's game Saturday morning against St. Viators. After playing Lockport and Buffalo Grove, only three goals had been scored on the WildKnights in their first three games. Next came the Huron team with a different offensive strategy. Typically they would send up only the O-hole and then if one of the players broke loose, they would swim free toward the net. This worked against St. Viators, but the WildKnights were glued to their opponents and defended them exceptionally. The only disappointment was the loss to St. Viators. This was the last game of the day and the fourth for the WildKnights, third for Viators (they played 2 Friday night). The WK team had only one hour rest from the intense Huron game also. We'll have to see what happens on Tuesday with both rested teams playing again at St. Viators.

Viators Girls needs Two Overtime to Defeat WildKnights
 | | | | Liz on the offensive side |
From the Herald:
A couple of days after facing off at the St. Viator tournament, the Lions and Wheeling/Prospect battled again and it was a struggle.
The teams played to a 4-4 tie in regulation, and it wasnt until the second overtime that the Lions prevailed again with a 6-5 win.
We knew that Prospect was going to come out after us. We knew they were coming out for it and the girls responded to it, said St. Viator coach Adam Clementi, whose team improved to 9-6. The girls did a good job and made it a point to get their heads in the game right away.
They played smart and thats what did it for them. It was by determination and heart and thats a big thing.
The goals in overtime came from Sarah Ostling (3 goals) and Sarah Hlavin for St. Viator. Tina Miklius added a goal, as did goalie Katie Polz from the cage at the end of the first quarter.
Liz Dix scored twice for the WildKnights, with other goals coming from Patti Blatter and Emiliy Schiavone. Lauren Fairburn scored in the overtime. Liz Dix and Lindsey Mills combined their efforts in goal.

Pirates take MSL crown from Boys
Four straight
Pirates extend MSL title streak by stopping WildKnights
By Bill Swick
Daily Herald Sports Writer
Posted Thursday, April 27, 2006
The Palatine and Wheeling/Prospect defenses manages to limit each others big guns in Wednesdays Mid-Suburban League boys water polo title game. Unfortunately for the WildKnights, the host Pirates had a few extra shots in their holster as Palatine won its fourth straight MSL title with an 11-5 triumph.
This wasnt our best game, but they did the job in conference this year, said first-year Palatine coach Joe Grzybek, whose team is 20-5, 11-0. I want them to improve and build momentum in every game so if we do make it to the state (tournament), we can do something. The Pirates are the No. 1 seed in their own sectional, which begins Wednesday. Skylar Davis, who has been scoring quite a bit lately for Palatine, was limited to just 2 goals by the WildKnights. No problem. Chris Walocha stepped up and scored 4 for the Pirates, including 3 straight unanswered goals over a minute and a half in the second quarter to put the hosts up 6-3.
(Wheeling/Prospect) didnt back down on Skylar, me or Mitch (Tucker) we just picked it up and put it away, said Walocha. Kevin Wood added 3 goals for the Pirates while Tucker and Steve Grzybek scored 1 apiece. Going into the game, Palatine goalie Spencer Blackham was questionable with an injured hip. He sat out Tuesdays game and was only going to play one quarter Wednesday to see what happens. The 6-foot-4 junior ended up completing the game and collected 11 saves, which included a penalty shot, to back up the Palatine defense.
Spencer had the best game out of everyone today, said coach Grzybek. Every one of his shots was on today. I didnt know what we were going to do for a goalie today, and he really stepped it up. This was his best game. To start the second quarter, a pair of goals from Wheeling/Prospect standout Andrew Bengtsen and another from Ryan Spacone (2 goals) tied the game at 3-3. But after that, Palatine began to run away.
They took advantage of every mistake we made, said WildKnights coach Dick Mortensen. There was a three-minute stretch where the wheels fell off of our bus.
Goals from Spacone and Aleks Burvikovs got through in the second half, but the WildKnights (19-7, 7-4) werent able to completely break the Pirates defense.
Give Joe credit. He came in a first-year coach and kept the tradition going, said Mortensen, whose team won its third straight divisional title. Im still happy. This was the year that no one expected us to be back. This shows that our system is working.

Water polo teams earn East titles
BY KEN KEENAN
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR
Make it a double-whammy for the Prospect/Wheeling co-op water polo program, as both the WildKnights' boys and girls teams earned MSL East championships -- and each for the third year in a row.
"It was our ultimate goal to win the division, so we're pretty excited," said girls head coach Shayna Mortensen, whose team clinched the title with a 5-2 win over Buffalo Grove last Thursday, improving to 21-4 overall (11-0 MSL East) heading into the league championship match against Barrington in the Broncos' own pool at 4:30 p.m. today. "I'm really proud of them. It's a great group of girls -- in the water and out of the water. They want to learn and they want to get better."
On the boys side, "winning the division definitely exceeded our expectations," said head coach Dick Mortensen, who's also Shayna's husband. "This was the toughest of the three. The first time was unexpected, but the second year we knew we'd win it. This year, with four new starters, I didn't think we'd be as good as before, but we're even better."
Indeed, the 2006 squad finished the regular season at 19-6 overall (7-3 East), surpassing last year's total of 17 wins for a Prospect/Wheeling boys record. The WildKnights clinched the East crown with a hair-raising 13-12 win over Buffalo Grove in two overtimes April 19 and faced Palatine for the league crown at Palatine on Wednesday (past deadline).
But back to the girls. In the clincher over BG, the WildKnights grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal by Patti Blatter, increasing it to 3-0 at halftime on second-period tallies by Blatter and Lauren Fairburn. Angelica Staniszewska made it 4-0 in the third, though the Bison cut it to 4-1 entering the fourth. Blatter notched the hat trick to give Prospect/Wheeling a 5-1 lead in the final quarter, with BG netting a late goal to finish the scoring. Goalkeeper Liz Dix earned the win in net, along with backup keeper Lindsay Mills.
"Blatter and Dix, they're both fourth-year varsity players, and their experience and knowledge of the game is awesome," Shayna Mortensen said. "They've done exactly what I've expected. They both can keep the girls up when they're down and take over a game when it needs to be taken over. They know what needs to be done to win. And the others look at how they react to every situation. That senior leadership is there, the confidence level. We go into every game knowing we have a chance to win."
Mortensen also had praise for Kristin Burke, Emily Schiavone, Amy Warner, Bethany Jacobs, Sarah Sohn, Fairburn and Mills.
"They all can shoot, play good defense and think positive. That combination makes them successful," she said. "I really try to make my girls believe in themselves and be winners. Without being cocky, we're confident in our abilities."
Mortensen added that it's no big deal to her whether the WildKnights, "win 1-0 or 11-10. A win's a win. You can beat any team on any day, but you have to play your 'A' game. I tell the team before every game that it's the most important game. You can't get caught up in what the opposition's record is. So we just worry about ourselves and do our best."
Back to the boys, who were led in the crazy win over Buffalo Grove by Andrew Bengtsen's nine goals, including the game-winner with 17 seconds left in double overtime. Holding a man advantage, Prospect/Wheeling almost won it on a shot by Oliver Smidt, but his try bounced off the top of the post and right to Bengtsen (team-high 99 goals), who swept it in for the win.
"Andrew's been our go-to-guy," Dick Mortensen said. "He's got 'it,' that characteristic like Michael Jordan had -- you want the ball in his hands when the game's on the line. Andrew's like that. He just takes over a game."
The high-scoring affair saw the WildKnights take an 8-4 halftime lead, only to see the Bison storm back for an 11-11 tie after regulation. In water polo, the first two OT sessions are not sudden death, and BG went up 12-11 in OT No. 1. But Bengtsen -- who else -- tied it at 12-12 and then won it in the second overtime. Ryan Spacone (hat trick) and Eric Maczko (goal) contributed as well.
The WildKnights had another thrill-packed game just one night prior, beating Hersey 7-6 in triple overtime. Once again, Wheeling/Prospect had a solid halftime lead, this time at 5-2. Yet Hersey pulled within 5-4 after three quarters, and then forged ahead 6-5 in the fourth.
But Bengtsen -- who else -- scored the tying goal in the fourth, forcing OT at 6-6. Neither team scored in the first two OT sessions, and substitute Chris Powers then won it in sudden death on a feed from goalkeeper/twin brother Jeff Powers.
"It was Jeff's suggestion to put Chris in at wing," Mortensen said. "He sensed that his twin brother, who was well-rested, could do it, and that's what happened. It was an unbelievable two days, an emotional rollercoaster. But our guys know how to win. We don't blow out a lot of people, but we have that sense that everything's going to be OK and we're going to take care of business. It's not arrogance, it's confidence. And the confidence has built all year. We don't take kindly to losing. It's not an acceptable option."
Beside Bengtsen, Mortensen pointed to the play of Jeff Powers, Aleks Burvikovs (26 goals), Matt Reiner, Spacone (44 goals) and Smidt as being key to the team's success.
"Jeff kept us in every game we've been in. He's been a great goalie all year," Mortensen said. "Aleks plays every position. He's Mr. Versatile, and he'll do whatever it takes to win. Ryan is our second-leading scorer behind Andrew, and Matt plays wire-to-wire in every game. Plus Oliver, he's our best defensive player. He does all the dirty work without the headlines. Without him, Jeff doesn't make as many saves."
Following the pair of conference title games, the boys team will open postseason play against Glenbrook South in the Glenbrook North Sectional May 3, while the girls square off against Hersey in the Glenbrook North Sectional May 4.
"We'd like to get out of our sectional and make State. If we play well, we can get out. The sense of urgency is there," Shayna Mortensen said.
"We'd like to win a game at sectionals, but the competition will be tough there," Dick Mortensen said. "But regardless of what happens in the postseason, it's been a phenomenal season. I couldn't ask for anything more. At the beginning, it almost seemed like a rebuilding year. But the boys really surprised me. We don't have a weak link."
March 9-Girls Start Water Polo Season with a Victory
Last night the WildKnights defeated Barrington at Wheeling 9-3. It was a testament to ball control defeating the speed of the Broncos. Alli was a perfect 4/4 on swim-offs to start each quarter. She and Patti lead the scoring with 3 goals each. Other scorers included Katelyn (with 3 ejections), Lauren and Amy. It was good to see the shooting spread over 7 girls taking a total of 30 shots. Stephanie and Bethany each had an assist. Liz had 2 assists in addition to her 11 saves. Lauren almost outscored her sister, but had a goal disallowed that came a microsecond after the buzzer. Katelyn had a 4 meter free shot bang off the post.
All in all it was a good first effort. Though there seemed to be some cobwebs, it was typical of a season opener. Prospect was ranked #18 and Barrington was at #21. A real test will come on Thursday when the girls travel up to #2 ranked Stevenson. This will be a valuable learning experience.
March 14-17: Three Victories in Three Nights
The Girls Varsity WildKnight water polo team recorded three wins this week. Tuesday was at Conant , Wednesday was against Elk Grove - their first year in water polo, and Thursday was nail-biter against Hersey. The 5-4 score illustrates how close this game was. Hersey scored two of their goals while the buzzer was sounding. There was good defensive play by both teams.
Next test is Palatine on Tuesday.
March 22 - LD was on tonight
The WildKnights claimed their fifth victory of the season against the Pirates in Palatine. Katelyn scored three early. Patty scored one and Allie added three more for comfort. But it was LD that starred tonight. In the fourth period, the Pirates were heating up their offense, but LD not only made 6 of her 11 saves in that period, she also scored on a 17 meter shot to the upper left corner. The Pirates were only able to beat her once on a 4-meter free shot to make the final score 8-1.
March 23 - WildKnights are victorious against Vernon Hills 11-2. The scoring was spread over seven different girls. LD had 8 saves and both goals scored against her were when they were shorthanded.
April 2 - WildKnights Take Second at St. Viators Invite
Saturday was a great day for water polo at St. Viators. In the first game against BG, Alli score 4 and Patty added 3 more for a 7-0 shutout by the goalie combination of Liz and Lindsay. Fate also helped as at the final buzzer, a full length shot got past Liz, and floated off the right post. Bethany shined with several defensive moves.
The St. Viators game started as a struggle. The Lions scored one early, then Liz tied it with a surprise 20 yard shot to the upper corner. With less than two seconds, the Lions scored their second goal. In the second round, Viators scored from the left and somehow snuck it by Liz on the short side. After getting an exclusion penalty, the Lions Sarah O. scored with a sudden blast from mid-pool. Three more Lions shots made it to the net before Marisa scored toward the end of the period. That was the WildKnights first shot of the second period. Down 7-2 at half time, Patty answered with an early goal in the third period. Other shots threatened the Lions, but couldn't get past their goalie. Two more shots eluded Liz even though she touched them and WK defenders were on the shooters. Though Patty rung up two more points in the fourth quarter, the hole was too deep to climb out. Final score 10-5.
The WildKnights were smiling again in the last game against Hersey. This was not going to be a repeat of their 5-4 battle earlier in the season. Five WK shots in the first period all found their mark while the Huskies had only a single goal late. Katelyn scored with a quick backhand in the second session. After a 4-meter goal by the Huskies, Alli's intensity put another mark on the board for a 7-2 halftime score. Six unanswered goals by WK included three by Liz in one of her few times playing the field instead of the net. Hersey was looking tired after a double overtime match with BG. Both teams scored two in the final period for a final of 15-4. The WildKnights had seven different girls score in that game. The WildKnights 2-1 record placed them second in the tournament, behing St. Viators.
For the day, many great efforts were seen. Liz played with her whole heart in all of the games, in goal or in the field. Lindsay made several nice saves and continously shows more confidence both defending the net and making passes to her forward players. Patty displayed scoring finesse with a couple lob shots along with a skip shot to the short side. Bethany had several opponents wondering whether it was strength or speed that was giving her the advantage. Amy's speed and deception are definitely showing results. Freshmen Sarah and Megan each scored against the Huskies. It is nice to see they can put those shots where they do some good. Julie is presenting more tenacity in her defense in every game. Alli celebrated her coming b-day with 8 goals on the day. It was a fun day.

2006 Girls take MSL Water Polo Championship
WildKnights net MSL title
By Bill Swick

Neither teams defense was very generous in Thursdays Mid-Suburban League girls water polo title game at Barrington. When the Fillies or Wheeling/Prospect did get shots off, there was no guarantee it would make it past either goalkeeper. Finally, 2 goals in the latter part of the third quarter a rebound push-in by Julie Rendino and a 4-meter shot by Patti Blatter made the difference as the WildKnights (11-0) captured the league crown with a 4-3 win.
Weve had a phenomenal season this was one of our goals, said WildKnights coach Shayna Mortensen, after her team won its second conference championship in three years. I dont think it was the best game weve ever played. But we made the adjustments we needed. Mortensen took advantage of a deep roster to rotate players often and give some girls rest. I tried to take advantage of every second of speed I have, Mortensen said. (Barrington has) such a big pool.
The WildKnights took their first lead about two minutes into the game when goalie Liz Dix tossed a long, high shot across the pool and scored. About a minute later, Blatter scored to make it 2-0.
Its always helpful (to go ahead early), said Blatter. Then you dont have to struggle in the end. If you dont act on their mistakes, theyll act on yours.
We came in nervous, said Dix, who collected 11 saves in goal. We have to remember that its all in fun. (Barrington is) an awesome team theyre very fast.
Barrington (9-2) took advantage of its speed on the fastbreaks. In the first quarter, Lizzie Stetson drove the ball and then tossed it to Christine Byron, who fired past Dix to cut the deficit to 2-1. After that, the WildKnights adjusted by holding back a few on defense to prevent the open shot. Stetson then scored the only goal of the second quarter on a WildKnights ejection to send the game into halftime tied at 2-2.
I expected it to be close, but I didnt know how close it would be, said Barrington coach Mark Markwell. They started keeping people back and that made it difficult for us. In the third quarter, Byron scored at 4:47 to put the Fillies up 3-2, but that was the last goal for Barrington. Fillies keeper Eileen Turkot finished with 6 saves.
They played tough. This was a pretty emotional game for them I give them credit for playing hard, said Markwell, who is looking forward to Thursdays Palatine sectional, where the Fillies are the top seed. I hope we can take this and use it as fuel for the fire.
Im proud of them they fought hard. This wasnt an easy game to accept the loss and they accepted it with class.
The WildKnights begin sectional play Thursday at Glenbrook North as the No. 4 seed.

Girls win first round at 2006 WP SECTIONALS
From the Herald, May 5, 2006:
For three quarters, Hersey and Wheeling/Prospect enjoyed a competitive contest that saw both teams trading goals. That all changed in the fourth quarter when the WildKnights scored 5 goals to run away with a 10-5 win in the sectional quarterfinal match. The sudden change in the game was not unexpected for the WildKnights, according to coach Shayna Mortensen.
We tried to do some different stuff through the first three quarters, and then we reverted back to our old game in the fourth quarter, Mortensen said. To get out of the sectional, were going to have to do some different things and bring our game up a notch, and this was a game to really try that.
The WildKnights Patti Blatter (3 goals) notched the only score in a strong defensive first quarter. Later, when Herseys Mari Paraskevopoulos scored with 1:30 left in the first half to cut the WildKnights lead to 2-1, Blatter answered again with a long arching toss to give her team a 3-1 lead at the half.
The Huskies played their best at the start of the second half when they pounded goalie Liz Dix with several shots and came up with goals from Johnson and Stephanie Goers. But the Huskies momentum ended as the fourth quarter began.
The WildKnights opened the final quarter by scoring 5 unanswered goals, including scores from Kristin Burke (2 goals), Blatter, and Lauren Fairburn (4 goals) to finish off the Huskies and advance to the semifinals against Loyola today at 7 p.m.

Girls fall to Loyola in 2006 WP Sectional semi-final
From Herald, Saturday May 6:
Sometimes, no matter how good you play, theres another team whos just a bit better.
That was the case for Wheeling/Prospect, which ran into red-hot Loyola in its sectional semifinal. The WildKnights hung tough for a quarter, but lost 15-6.
After the game, WildKnights coach Shayna Mortensen saw the ending as bittersweet.
Loyola was awesome. We played great. It was a great season, Mortensen said. My seniors were in, and it was the last time they played together as a team. Im happy, but Im sad because theyre breaking up, but they played their hearts out.
Loyola and Wheeling/Prospect traded goals in the first quarter, with Samantha Shehan opening the scoring for the Ramblers, followed quickly by Jackie Shershon (4 goals).
Wheeling/Prospect quickly countered 25 seconds later with a goal from Emily Schiavone (3). Schiavone would later score with six seconds left in the quarter to bring the WildKnights as close as they would get at 3-2.

March 21 - Knights defeat Saxons 12 - 4
In the first girls water polo game I was able to see this year, the Knights were impressive and looked to be in midseason form, defeating Schaumburg 12-4. It is great that the scoring was spread among 7 players; KC, Sarah, Phillips, Michelle, Amy, Lauren and Julie. Lauren was high scorer with 3. There was agressive play on defense, good movement and swimming on offense, hard accurate shots, and some outstanding saves.

US Women are 2007 Champs
USA WOMEN ARE THE 2007 WORLD CHAMPIONS!
Team USA takes home the gold and the top goalkeeper award after a flawless finish at the FINA World Championships
Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center - When competitors are as evenly matched as the U.S. and
Australia, it is often difficult for either team to get an advantage in the water. In the first half of today's championship match, both teams fought tirelessly to get the upper hand. After 16 minutes of regulation play, the score was tied 1-1, with Australia's Suzannah Fraser opening up the board in the first quarter and U.S.'s Moriah van Norman evening it up in the second. The U.S. jumped ahead in the third quarter scoring four goals to Australia's three. The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, leaving Team USA with a one goal advantage to take home the championship title. The United States went unchallenged the entire tournament, winning all six of their games including three preliminary match-ups, quarter finals, semi-finals and tonights gold medal round. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Armstrong was recognized by the FINA Federation as the tournaments Outstanding Goalkeeper. This was Armstrongs first World Championship appearance.

April 5 - Big Test Tonight
On Tuesday, I was able to see a somewhat lackadaisical Knights team defeat BG Bisons 7-3. It took about 3 quarters for the girls to awaken from a week of Spring Break. Several nice saves helped keep the Knights in contention.
On Wednesday, a Knights team with a very different attitude and clear focus put down the Rolling Meadows Mustangs. Very impressive defense was played, particularly against RM star, Colleen. Sarah and Emily were very active and effective in their defensive roles. Lauren was typically accurate from the hole. Molly scored with a nice shot on a break away. Meadows was clearly out-coached and out-defended in this one. Very good play by all of the girls!!!
Tonight at Wheeling, the Knights will face the #12 ranked New Trier team. Prospect is currently ranked #18. It will take an awesome effort to bring this victory home.

New Trier Sneaks past Knights
On Thursday night, the Knights first period against the New Trier Trevians was nothing to shout about. Passing was marginal at best with overthrows, underthrows and bad receptions resulting in too many turn-overs. Lauren's goal and tight defense allowed the first period to end 1-1.
In the second period, things improved. Emily had a goal from the center and Sarah ended the period with a breakaway shot that was stopped but her determination put her in place to score on the rebound with no time left. At the half, Knights up 3-2.
The refs in this game were more active than many. Unfortunately, Emily had three exclusion fouls and had to watch the second half from the bench. But several girls stepped-up defensively, and the third period ended 4-4.
In the fourth quarter, the Trevians took advantage of several Knights miscues. The Knights had two girls on a breakaway, but a steal by New Trier gave them a break going the other way, and a goal to take the lead. Then they scored again as Sarah was swimming off for a kickout. Later Lauren got a pass to the hole and used a beautiful backhand to bring the Knights back to one down. The Trevians scored again and Sarah had enough of that. She scored from 8 meters out and then sent a nice pass to Lauren to tie the score again at 7, with about 3 minutes of playing time. But New Trier was not about to rollover and play dead. While KC was serving a kickout, the Trevians had a shot tipped into the goal, nice play. Then another goal put the Knights down 7-9. With 25 seconds left, #5 (who was that Knight?) scored to bring us within one again but a last second shot was not enough to get the Knights to overtime.
The New Trier powerplay defeated the Knights in this game. The Knights had man-up chances but were not as effective as the Trevians. Hopefully, the Knights can learn from those Trevians and make their powerplay as effective, come playoff time.
