Prospect at Hersey - From the Herald by Aaron Gabriel
With Christine Rovani recovering from a perforated eardrum, Hersey's girls swimming team might have seemed a bit vulnerable as it hosted Prospect on Thursday at Olympic pool in Arlington Heights.
But it turns out Prospect standout Meg Dix was a late scratch from the meet due to illness.
"We thought the door might have been open for us," said Prospect coach Alfonso Lopez, "but that didn't turn out to be the case."
Instead, Hersey won 117-69, keeping them unbeaten through the Mid-Suburban East with just one dual remaining, against Elk Grove next week.
On senior night for Hersey, the Huskies' freestyle depth was just too much for Prospect to match. Hersey won all the individual freestyles and both freestyle relays, enabling Huskies coach Dick Mortensen to defeat essentially the same Prospect team he'd coached just last season.
"It's always fun to swim Prospect," said Hersey senior Kathryn Korff, "and we had a little extra motivation this year because our coach came from there."
Korff was one key for Hersey. She won the 50 free in 26.36, keeping her on track for a chance at eventually making the state meet in that event. Korff also placed second to teammate Amanda Petro in the 100 free and anchored both freestyle relays.
Petro, a freshman, continued to impress, winning the 200 free in 2:01.29 and the 100 in 56.40. Other Hersey swimming wins came from Caroline Stoklosa in the 500 free (5:56.34) and Erin Horne in the 100 back (1:06.19). In diving Hersey's Kate Reszotko (208.15) edged Prospect's Christina Pekar (202.80) in a matchup of two of the league's elite performers.
In a busy week that features both homecoming festivities and the Jamboree Invitational on Saturday at Olympic, Mortensen was happy to claim victory in a meet where both teams share similar strengths.
"It just so happens that a lot of our strong events are their strong events, and a lot of our weak events are their weak events," Mortensen said. "But things ended up going our way."
Prospect and coach Alfonso Lopez had plenty of individual highlights. The Knights started with victory in the medley relay with Ali Alesi, Jessica Cavaiani, Greta Pietraszek and Kelly Wilson. Pietraszek went on to win both the 200 IM (2:23.83) and the 100 fly (1:05.52), and Cavaiani won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.01).
"We're kind of in a phase where everybody is kind of stuck, in terms of times," said Lopez, a former Prospect swimmer himself. "Mentally, that's kind of hard on people, but sometimes, that's the best you can do. We just want to be able to maintain where we are now, and then get ready to drop times at the end."
Both teams are looking forward to Saturday's Jamboree, a spectacle which will include a visit from the homecoming courts as well as a musical soundtrack for the meet.
"It'll be fun," said Lopez. "Everybody looks forward to it - there's a real nice, competitive group of teams that will be there. And because of tonight's meet, our kids will have a little bit better feel for the pool."
Schaumburg 108, Conant 78: Sammy Schuckles and Kristy Bessler both won a pair of individual events as the host Saxons earned an MSL West triumph. Schuckles won the 50 free (26.64) and the 100 back (1:00.83) and Bessler was tops in the 200 free (2:07.13) and the 100 free (58.49) and Schaumburg won all three relays.

Knights Play Well in 2007 Girls Water Polo MSL Championship
What an exciting game!!! The Knights played outstanding, but were bettered by the Barrington Fillies in the MSL Championship. Congratulations to the Knights on winning the MSL EAST and to the four girls named All-Conference.

Barrington Fillies in Fine Form

Things are shaping up nicely for Barrington. The Fillies are in the midst of their best season since girls water polo became an IHSA-sanctioned sport. On Thursday, thing got even better to as the Fillies won the Mid-Suburban League championship with a hard-fought 8-5 win over visiting Prospect. The Fillies are now 19-4 and swept their MSL foes 12-0.
We gave the player of the game (today) to everyone, said Barrington coach Mark Markwell. This was a team effort. If you look at the stats, we were (great) across the board today. Im very happy. When you win a championship and sweep the entire league, how can you not be happy?
Barrington shut down the Knights near the end of the third period while getting goals from Christine Byron (2 goals) and Jacie Dick to pull away. It was good to get conference, Byron said. We also swept the conference completely, and that was the first time in our water polo history. It was a good team effort. Adding to that team effort were goals from Kristine Alfonso (2), Christa Pappas (2) and Lizzie Stetson.
I think my girls played real well, Markwell said. Prospect played extremely well, too. We expected it to be a much tighter game than first time around, and sure enough, it was. Goalie Brooke Wojtowicz also had a solid effort for the Fillies with 11 saves. From a goalies standpoint, we felt early on that we had to have tight D up top, especially on the girls who were shooting, Wojtowicz said. For our team, it was definitely a good start to our postseason.
One girl who was certainly a scoring threat for the Knights was Emily Schiavone (4 goals). In an all-around stellar performance, Schiavone scored twice after Fillies ejections and twice from halfway across the pool. She scored 3 goals in the third period to get the Knights within 6-5.
I felt pretty lucky. Its like I shoot and just pray, joked Schiavone. I do practice (long shots) a lot. Im really glad about todays game because we worked together very well. It wouldve been nice to win but we played really hard. Everyone tried their hardest I know I tried my hardest.
Prospect (14-7, 10-2) opened up the scoring early with 1-0 lead in the first after a goal by Sarah Sohn.
Much better than the last time we were here, said Prospect coach Dick Mortensen of an earlier 14-5 loss to Barrington. I think we did a good job of staying in the game. We slowed it down to our liking. Our passes were good and (we took) advantage of their openings.
Sophomore goalie Giovannina Penze had a standout effort by turning away many shots from the Fillies.
In the end, their speed and skill outplayed us today, said Mortensen. Like I said, Im not unhappy at all. We played as a team today.

Prospect takes 2nd at BG Invite - From the Herald by Aaron Gabriel
Hersey girls swimming coach Dick Mortenson is seeing things from a different perspective these days.
Formerly in charge at Prospect, he's now guiding the Huskies - and quite successfully, as evidenced by a decisive victory in the 10-team Buffalo Grove Stampede on Saturday. But it's definitely odd for him to view the athletes he so recently coached at Prospect as an opponent.
"It was a little strange when they walked out on deck," said Mortenson. "I'm kidding around with (Prospect's) Megan Dix on deck, and she reminded me that I'd always told them not to talk to the other team during a meet."
Probably not a bad rule, and Hersey sure to seemed to have its focus. Amanda Petro won the 100-yard free, placed second in the 100 backstroke and combined with Kristy Johnson, Christine Rovani, and Kathryn Korff to win the 400 free relay, and with Rovani, Korff and Caroline Stoklosa to win the 200 free relay.
Rovani delivered a career best in winning the 100 breaststroke (1:10.31), and Katelyn Reszotko placed second in diving behind Prospect's Christina Pekar.
"We placed 1-4-7 in the 100 free, then 2-4-6 in the 100 backstroke," said Mortenson. "You combine that with winning the 200 free relay, and that's a nice little stretch for us. Our depth really helped us out here - we're very happy with the meet."
Hersey amassed 448 points; Prospect was second at 337.5, just ahead of the host Bison (320). South Elgin placed fourth (283), followed by Rolling Meadows (262.5), Conant (187), Jacobs (160), Cary-Grove (155) and Dundee-Crown (99).
Prospect, now coached by onetime Knights swimmer Alfonso Lopez, had their share of high points. The medley relay of Dix, Jessica Cavaiani, Greta Pietraszek and Amanda Drucker won in 2:00.02, the same group placed second in the 200 free relay, and Pietraszek won the 200 IM in 2:22.22.
South Elgin had individual winners in Hannah Rueger (50 free, 26.11) and Haley Erath (100 fly, 1:04.84). Cary-Grove's top individual finish came from Lauren Curtis (second, 200 free).
Rolling Meadows' Neeka Szacilo placed second in the 500 free (5:27.66) and the Mustangs picked up big points by finished second in the 400 free relay in 3:52.66.
Buffalo Grove coach Tom Mroz was pleased with the way his team battled back after a disappointing disqualification in the medley relay. Veronika Jedryka won both the 200 and 500 freestyles, Sara Fasching won the 100 back and placed second in the 100 free and Angela Rodriguez placed second in the 100 breaststroke.
"Everybody always wants to swim a best time," said Mroz, whose team will visit Hersey on Thursday in a key Mid-Suburban East dual. "But sometimes it's just as important to hold your time at the same level. We had a lot of that today, and it's good to see. Everyone's working hard - that's what matters."
