Eagles Ranked #3 in MD, #17 in Region, and #65 Nationally

Sunday's win over the New York #2 ranked Massapequa Stars was enough to give the Eagles 4th place overall in the Bethesda Thanksgiving Tournament. This was worth 1330 GotSoccer.com ranking points. In addition, the Eagles netted 300 points for point differential and 40 points for defeating the 2009 state semifinalist Stars. Altogether this boosted the Eagles state ranking points to 3994, 430 points ahead of the #4 ranked Baltimore Bays.

Eagles End Fall Campaign on High Note at Bethesda Tourney

Despite a soggy field on Saturday, and cancellation of one of their three scheduled games, the Eagles played well, finishing the Bethesda Tournament with a win over New York East #2 and Region 1 #10 ranked Massapequa.

The tournament started on schedule despite a few days of drenching rains brought by the remnants tropical storm Ida. In Saturday's opener against the MD #1 Bethesday Freedom, the Eagles opened with a goal in the first 10 minutes as Julia sent a ball through to Anna who buried it in the net. The Freedom came back with two goals before the half on balls that bounced around in the box on a soggy field and eventually found their way into the goal. In the second half, Brooke took a ball to the endline and sent across a trademark cross as Anna charged hard toward the goal. The ball curved and went into the goal unaided, evening the score at 2-2. With 15 minutes remaining, Bethesda's ODP striker took a ball in the corner, beat two Eagle defenders with some beautiful moves and snuck the ball in the near post, giving Bethesda a 3-2 lead. The Eagles chased hard to counter Bethesda's delaying tactics and had a number of good opportunities, but couldn't put the ball past the Freedom keeper and the game ended a in a 3-2 Eagle loss. Despite the loss, the Eagles worked the ball well and gave Bethesda all they could handle.

The Eagle's opener was the last game of the day as action for the remainder of the day was cancelled due to soggy field conditions.

On Sunday the Eagles faced the Massapequa Stars, the 2008 New York East and Region 1 champions, and currently #2 ranked in New York East. The Stars demonstrated their technical skill on the opening kickoff as they worked the ball around the backfield. However, the Eagles used their speed and hustle to continuously put pressure on the ball and force the Stars into turnovers. The Stars had one ball hit the crossbar and the Eagles put a few on frame that were saved, leaving the score knotted 0-0 at halftime. In the second half the Eagles' speed, power, and passing started to pay dividends. Brooke took a ball from Leah to the endline and sent across one of many crosses for the day. It went over the box and Sarah gathered it in on the left side inside the 18. She unleashed a left-footed shot toward the upper part of the goal. The Massapequa keeper made the save, but couldn't hold on and Brooke, who hustled into the box after her cross, put the ball into the net, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. It was all they needed, but not all they would get. Just a few minutes later Sarah took the ball on the left side of the field on a feed from Christina. She dribbled parallel to the 18, beating two defenders, and sent a  pass across the box to Brooke who rifled the ball into side net giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. More was still to come. With five minutes in the game, Brianna gathered a loose ball at the 18 and fired a second touch missle. Again, the keeper made the save but couldn't hold onto the ball. Amaya found the loose ball and put it into the net for her first goal as an Eagle. Overall, the Eagles played one of their best games ever. They found feet, demonstrated teamwork, hustled, showed composure, and found net to end the fall outdoor season on a very positive note.

The performance was good enough for 4th place overall in the tournament.

Overall the fall campaign was very successful. The Eagles ended it ranked #4 in Maryland, claimed the August Cup with a win over SAC, and won their bracket and made the quarterfinals of the WAGS Tournament. They ended their first season back in WAGS Division 1 in a very respectable sixth place where they recorded ties with Bethesda and SAC and could have finished much higher if not for one bad weekend and a couple of questionable calls. Their overall record was 9 wins, 8 losses, and 4 ties. They scored 33 goals and allowed 25 while recording 7 shutouts. Perhaps even more important, the hard work in practice on fitness, skills and possession and the program of coaches Sam and Laurie have started to pay dividends. All of this bodes well for an even more successful spring campaign.

Eagles Fall in CASL Shootout

The Eagles offense had an off weekend at the CASL Shootout in Raleigh, and two questionable calls resulted in PK goals for opponents that doomed the Eagles chances.

In the first game, against the Cape Fear Wave, the ball spent most of the time in the Eagles' offensive end and and many balls were sent just off-target. The game ended in a 0-0 draw and went to a shootout. Tori saved the 3rd and 4th chances for the Wave, while Julia, Ange, Emily and Brianna connected to give the Eagles the win.

In the second game the Eagles faced CFC East Gold. The defense continued to play well and the ball spent most of the time in the Eagles' offensive end. Again, the Eagles couldn't seem to find net on offense, sending many balls just off target. With 10 minutes left the Eagles were whistled for a foul just inside the box on what seemed to be a questionable call. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Gold connected on the PK. The Eagles continued to pressure the Gold, but with 5 minutes left Sarah went down with a twisted ankle. The referree seemed more intent on getting home from the game than seeing than seeing the game played fairly and the ball was never put into play again as the score remained 0-1. The Gold ended up winning the wild card game and claiming the tournament Bronze.

In the third game the Eagles needed a 2-0 win against the Kendal SC White and some help in order to advance. Unfortunately the game looked like a repeat of the previous game. The Eagles had plenty of chances, but just couldn't find net. With about 15 remaining in the second half the Eagles were whistled for an inadvertant hand ball inside the box, resulting in a PK. The White connected, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Eagles continued to put pressure on the White, gaining two FKs just outside the box that could have easily been ruled inside the box. Unfortunately, their offensive struggles continued and they again fell 0-1. The White ended up advancing to the Final where they lost 2-0 to the Acadmey United SC 2-0.

While the result may have been disappointing, the Eagles played hard, as they always do, allowed no goals during live play, were 4-for-4 on PKs, and never gave up. They ended up losing to the 2nd and 3rd place teams in the tournament on a couple of questionable PKs. Hopefully the fickle soccer gods will be on the Eagles' side this weekend in Bethesda.

Eagles Fall to BRYC 2-0 in Rainy End to Fall WAGS Season

The Eagles closed out their return to WAGS Division 1 with a loss to the Virginia #2 BRYC 95 Elite. The game was tied at 0-0 for more than 60 minutes and was played on a wet St. Timothy's field with intermitent rain. With less than 10 minutes there was a loose ball in the box that BRYC eventually put in the net. A few minutes later, BRYC scored again on a long shot that found upper net, giving them a 2-0 win. The Eagles are currenly tied at #3 with BRYC (which has 1 game levft) at 14 points, 1 ahead of NVSC and 3 ahead of Bethesda, both of which have 2 games left. The Eagles can finish no worse than 6th and will definitely be back in Division 1 for the spring season. Despite closing on a sour note, it was a great return to Division 1 with 4 wins and ties against the #1 and #2 teams in MD, Bethesda and SAC.

Despite playing with a short bench and several players at less than full strength, the Eagles prevailed over the Freestate Strikers 1-0 in Sunday afternoon WAGS action. Ange was sick and not at the game, Sarah was sick, Taylor was recovering from strep throat, Leah was still suffering from a sprained ankle, and Coach Sam was at home with a bum knee. Laurie got lost on the way to the field, but arrived in time to take over coaching duties. She moved Brooke to sweeper to cover for Ange, and used a 4-4-2. In the first half, the Strikers dominated possession, but were never able to penetrate into the last third of the field due to stingy defense by the Eagles and the half ended in a 0-0 tie. In the second half, the Eagles began to find feet and control the game. With less than 10 minutes left, Julia made a nice run to the endline, squared and sent a beautiful cross over the keeper and onto the head of a hard-charging Anna  for a 1-0 lead. With only a few minutes left, a tough hand ball call went against the Eagles inside the box, giving the Strikers a P.K. Tori concentrated, dove, and knocked the ball away. After a short scramble for the loose ball, Sarah cleared it out of bounds and the game ended, giving the Eagles a big 1-0 win and 3 important points. After the game the Eagles celebrated Samara's birthday (and the big win) with cake brought by her parents. The win moves the Eagles to 4-2-2 and gives them 14 points with 1 game remaining. They currently are in second place, but most other teams have two or more games left. Next Sunday, November 1, they face BRYC at St. Tim's at 10:30. Remember that 11/1 is the end of daylight savings time so be sure to set your clocks back before you go to bed.

It was a cool day, but the Eagles were on fire as they hosted MD #1 Bethesda Freedom this Sunday on a wet field at St Timothy's. The Eagles served notice that this wasn't the same team that lost to the Freedom in the opening round of the 2008 State Cup by sending in several crosses and shots and dominating the first 15 minutes of the game. The Eagles struck first when Sarah found the ball in the clear inside the 18 after some nifty close action by the midfielders and forwards. She slotted it near post to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Thanks to some good defense and a ball cleared off the line by Ange, the Eagles carried the lead into the half. About 10 minutes into the second half, Anna broke free of several defenders and took the ball to the endline. There she sent a beautiful cross to the far post where hard-charging Shannon connected and found net. The Freedom attacked patiently while the Eagles went into prevent mode. The Freedom drew within a goal on a corner kick to make the score 2-1. Anna and Julia had several more nice runs, but couldn't quite find net. With less than 5 minutes left Bethesda got the equalizer on a high shot that hit the crossbar but came down with just enough forward momentum to cross the line. The last 5 minutes were back and forth and the final remained 2-2. The Eagles are now in 4th place at 3-2-2, one point ahead of BRYC and 3 points ahead of the Freedom, who have each played one fewer game. The Eagle's visit the Freedom Strikers next Sunday, 10/25, at 2:00 p.m.

Eagles drop two away games in Virginia in weekend WAGS action

This past weekend the Eagles dropped two games to tough teams in WAGS. On Saturday, following a 2 hour drive, the Eagles played a 10:30 game to Virginia #1 and Virginia State Cup Semifinalist NVSC Junior Majestics Gold. The Eagles fell 4-0 including 1 goal from a penalty kick.

On Sunday, the Eagles had another 2 hour drive to a 11:00 game against the Virginia #4, SYC Extreme White. The Eagles played a close game and were down 2-1 until a late penalty kick resulted in a goal and a 3-1 final tally.

Unfortunately the team photographer was AWOL so no photos of the weekend games are available.

This weekend the Eagles have another long drive to face Virginia #5 and Virginia State Cup Semifinalist the MPS Green Fury at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday they square off against the Maryland #4 and Maryland State Finalist Severna Park Kickers in a 9:00 a.m. home game at St. Tims. The day was grey and misty as the Eagles took on the Spring Division 1 champs and MD #1, SAC United Premier, in early season WAGS action at St. Tim's. The Eagles took an early lead on a header beamed in by Julia  off a beautiful corner kick by Ange.Tori recorded a great fingertip save on a  PK to preserve the lead at the half. Action went up and down the field for most of the second half with both teams having a their chances. In the last 10 minutes SAC unleashed a furious hail of shots as the Eagles hunkered down on defense. Thanks to several finger tip saves by Tori and great play by the defense, the lead held. Unfortunately, in the last minute, a free kick resulted in a final chance for SAC. SAC put the ball in the box on the kick. After the ball bounced around a bit, Tori got her hands on it, but SAC eventually scored. The whistle blew shortly after the ensuing kickoff. The Eagles played a great game on both ends of the field in a hard fought game that was  a great way to start the WAGS season and served notice that the Eagles belong in D1. Congratulations Eagle!
