A PARENTS VIEW OF PROPER NUTRITION

This is an email I received from a Lady Blaze parent regarding the importance of nutrition and how it affects play

"I wanted to compliment you on your nutrition plan you use for the kids.  My daughter had her first club volleyball tournament which was an all day event.  Granted, it wasn't as physical as soccer, but I decided I would use the same guidelines you have set.  I will say I could see the difference on her energy level compared to that of her teammates.  I was quite impressed.  Not that I didn't believe in it.  It was just different to compare it outside of the soccer field.  I will say I plan on sticking to it during the volleyball season."

SPORTS CAMP AND HYDRATION

Athletic camps and training sessions may keep your child fit, but it could also leave them dehydrated. University of Conneticut researchers tested 58 players ages 10 to 14 and found that more than 59% of boys and 70% of girls were seriously dehydrated by day 4 of camp, despite plenty of available water. Tell children to watch out for unusual tiredness, muscle cramps, and urine that is more yellow than clear. The National Athletic Trainers Association recommends:

*Before Exercise (6 oz)
*During Exercise  (12 oz)
*Post Exercise  (20 oz)

All amounts are basaed on a 90 pound child.  Source: Prevention Magazine, July 2005
