Rankings

The 1st Metronews Power Index for the girls has been released.  Currently Preston is ranked #16 in the state for AAA and has played the second hardest schedule in the state for all schools.  Maxpreps currently has the Knights ranked 19th in the state for AAA.

Thursday, December 30
PHS Beats Bucs for Second Time

Preston beat the visiting Buckhannon-Upshur Bucs for the second time this year.  The final score was 51-37.  Preston came out of the blocks hitting on all cylinders as the Knights hit five three pointers in the first to take a commanding 24-10 lead.  Preston would cruise the rest of the way for the victory.  Carly Kelley and Kayla Boggs scored 13 points a piece.  Kayla added nine rebounds, an assist, and three blocks.  Carly added three rebounds, two  steals, and two assists.  MJ Braham had a solid performance with nine points, 11 rebounds, a steal, and an assist.  Ashly Plum scored eight points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and yet another block.  Morgan Radabaugh hit a three to continue her streak that when she makes a three the Knights are undefeated.  Morgan finished with four points, three rebounds, a steal, and an assist.  Heather Clark added two points and six rebounds.  Kaitlyn Workman also scored two points to go with two steals and a block.  Whitney Workman and Jessie Feather each grabbed two rebounds while Nicole Spindler got one rebound.  Game balls go to Kayla Boggs, Carly Kelley, and Ashly Plum.

Friday, December 17
PHS Beats the Bees in OT, Now 4-0

The Preston Knights forced overtime in the final second of regulation and then won the game in the final seconds of overtime against NCAC rival East Fairmont.  It was a tightly contested game throughout where every basket, steal, assist, and rebound were important and meant the game.  This was a game where every possession mattered.  It was a game where the Knights found themselves trailing for the first time this year.  PHS trailed after one 14-12 and at the break 30-26.  In what has been a trend so far this year, the Knights came out in the third quarter and put their best quarter together.  Preston held a slim 45-43 lead after three.  The fourth quarter saw the two teams trade basket after basket to where EF led 58-55 with seven seconds left.  Senior Ashley Shrout took the inbounds pass and raced to the other end of the floor where she would provide the dramatic last second of regulation.  As Shrout released her three she was fouled with 1.1 seconds remaining on the clock.  For the Knights to get this to overtime, Ashley would have to make all three free throws with all eyes on her.  Shrout calmly stepped up and did as she did a year ago in helping defeat UHS, as she hit all three.  The start of ot saw the Bees score first but on the next possession it was Ashly Plum who found her self unguarded and hit a three to give the Knights the lead for good.  A foul shot by Kayla Boggs in the final seconds gave the Knights a 65-64 win at East Fairmont.  Carly Kelley led all scorers as she came out red hot and hit four three pointers.  Carly finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, a steal, an assist, and a block.  Kayla Boggs rebounded from a subpar first half and finished with 17 points (15pts in the second half and ot), five rebounds, two steals, and an assist.  Ashley Shrout had her best game of the season with 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists.  Ashly Plum added five points, five rebounds, two steals, and a team high six assists.  MJ Braham scored four points, five rebounds, two blocks, and an assist.  Sammi Ash hit a big three pointer for her points to go with four rebounds.  Heather Clark and Morgan Radabaugh each connected for two points.  Heather also had a team high seven rebounds to go with two steals, two assists, and a block.  Morgan contributed three assists and two rebounds.  The game balls go to Ashley Shrout and Carly Kelley.  Next the Knights have a showdown with the #5 University Hawks.  Both teams will go into the contest undefeated at 4-0.

The PHS jv won 49-40.  Whitney Workma finished with 14 points and three steals.  Jessie Feather finished with 11 pts. and 12 rebounds.  Kaitlyn Workman added nine points an six steals.  Amber Neyman had three points and three steals.

Sunday, December 12
Preston Wins Lady Gael Classic; Now Stand at 3-0

Preston wore down their opponents in the championship game and broke open the game in the second half and won going away 62-38.  This score marks the third straight game in a row where the Knights have scored at least 60 points in a game.  The last time the Knights scored over 60 in a game was two seasons ago.  The PHS opponents for the championship game was a scrappy group from Frederick, MD called the New Life Rams.  New Life came into the game with a 4-1 record and had two players each averaging 20 points a game.  After the first quarter it looked as if the Rams duo would be well on their way to their averages.  PHS held a slim 17-15 lead at the end of one.  The two Ram players had 14 of their teams 15 points.  They would only score a combined six points the rest of the game as PHS would use a tenacious triangle and two defense and totally shut the Rams down.  Neither player could get an open look as the Knights rotated "chasers" at them the rest of the game.  PHS opened their lead to eight points going into the locker room with a 29-21 score.  Preston doubled up their opponents scoring in the second half as the Knights ran the rams ragged.  Ashly Plum returned to the lineup and led all scorers with 16 points.  She also had team highs with four steals and four assists.  MJ Braham played her best game adding a double double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. She also had three blocks and two assists.  Kayla Boggs was the third Knight in double figures with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks.  Morgan Radabaugh scored seven points, two steals, and two rebounds.  Sammi Ash added four points, five rebounds, three assists, and a block.  Heather Clark also scored four points to go with four rebounds, a steal and an assist.  More importantly she was one of the chasers who helped shut down the Rams leading scorers.  Ashley Shrout scored two points to go with four offensive rebounds and an assist.  Ashley was also a chaser in the second half on the defensive end.  Jessie Feather finished the scoring with two points.  Kaitlyn Workman used her cross country skill as a chaser as well.  K-Dub finished with three assists, two steals, and two rebounds.  Carly Kelley battled foul trouble the entire game but contributed two steals and two assists before fouling out.  Keryssa Slaubaugh and Nicole Spindler each added an offensive rebound.  Whitney Workman had an assist.  Kayla Boggs was named the tournaments MVP while Heather Clark and Ashley Shrout were named to the all tournament team.  The game balls for the game go to Ashly Plum and Mary Jane Braham.  A game ball also goes to everyone for the entire weekend and for the fourth Lady Gael Classic championship in a row as everyone had a hand in the results.   You can go to girls basketball page on  prestonathletics.com to view a 30 second clip from the Hagerstown news.

Sunday, December 12
Preston Buries Bishop Walsh; Moves to 2-0 & Goretti Title Game

Preston High jumped out to a commanding double-digit lead at the end of the 1st and dominated the Bishop Walsh Spartans 60-25.  The win moves PHS into the championship game of the Lady Gael Classic.  The Knights broke the single game record for PHS with 28 steals in the contest.  You put that with an overwhelming 27 offensive rebounds and the Knights took  a whopping 34 more shots then their counterparts.  PHS lead 33-7 at intermission.  Kayla Boggs led all scorers with 14 points, six rebounds, three steals, three  blocks, and an assist.  Fellow sophomore Carly Kelley also made double figures with 11 points, five steals, and three assists.  Morgan Radabaugh did all her damage in the first period where she scored eight points to go with a team high four assists.  Whitney Workman scored her first varsity points of her career.  "Dubs" finished with six points, three steals, and three rebounds.  Sammi Ash and Ashley Shrout scored five points each.  Sammi also contributed seven rebounds and three assists.  Shrout added five steals and five rebounds.  Jessie Feather also scored her first varsity points chipping in with four points, two rebounds, and a block.  Kaitlyn Workman scored two points to go with five steals, five rebounds, and two assists.  Keryssa Slaubaugh also connected on a basket for two points, five rebounds, and two assists.  MJ Braham battled foul trouble all evening and put in two points and seven rebounds before fouling out.  Heather Clark finished the scoring with one point but had seven rebounds(5 offensive), four steals, three assists, and a block.  Nicole Spindler had an assist.  The game balls for the game go to Kayla Boggs and Carly Kelley.

Preston Knocks Off #2 University

Preston High defeated the #2 University Hawks 50-44.  The Knights improve their record to 4-1.  In a highly intense and contested game it was one final push by the Knights in the final 53 seconds to break a 44 all tie to win the game.  Preston started on fire in the first five minutes of the game opening up a ten point lead.  UHS was able to score at the end of the quarter to cut the Knight lead to 14-6.  The second quarter saw the Hawks hit their stirde and take control of the contest and go into halftime with the lead 22-19.  That would be the last time the Knights would trail.  Preston came out in the second half with a 14-3 run to lead the game 33-25 with just over a minute to play in the quarter.  However, University would answer with one of their signature runs and ended the quarter with Preston's lead cut to 33-32.  Preston once again opened the quarter with another run to regain control of the contest.  Preston led 44-38 with just over a minute to play when UHS would make one final strike.  Two three point baskets by University tied the game at 44 with 53 seconds to go in the game.  On the next possession Ashley Shrout found a lane to the basket and she took it and drove to the lane forcing the Hawks to foul to keep her from scoring.  Ashley sank both free throws to give the Knights a two point lead.  After a UHS miscue PHS tried to run out the clock only to see a UHS player steal the ball and race to a wide open layup to tie the game.  However, out of nowhere, Heather Clark ran down the opposition and deflected the ball away from behind to get the Knights' the ball.  Michele Groves then got fouled with thirteen seconds left and she calmly swished both shots to extend the Knight lead to four.  One more turnover by the Hawks and two more free throws from Mackenzie Martin ended any attempt of a comeback by the second ranked team in the state.  Preston was able to control the boards down the stretch and won the 2nd chance pts. category to win the game.  Preston also dominated at the foul line as PHS went 19-25 from the line while holding the hawks to 7-11.  Mackenzie Martin led the scoring with 15 points.  Michele Groves chipped in with 13 points and Ashley Shrout also had double figures with 12 points.  The trio also combined to go 17-20 from the foul line.  Heather Clark scored five points but more importantly she won every loose ball/hustle play there was in the game.  Ashly Plum scored four points.  Hannah Bolyard scored one point in the second half but she brought a calming influence (coming back from an acl tear) to the team when UHS tried to turn up the pressure at the end.  Her passing is something that can't be put in a boxscore.  Due to a camera malfunction complete stats cannot be done until a copy of the game comes from UHS.
