Looking For Special Coaches

We are always looking for and accepting applications from qualified, passionate, selfless, dedicated, and humble coaches.  If you are such a person, please register to become a USAV member, membership type: adult coach affiliated with the junior program.   You must be at least 18 to be a coach and at least 25 to be a coach/chaperone.  In the left sidebar, click on Online USAV Registration for registration instructions.

If you are a knowledgeable and experienced player or coach who loves the game of volleyball and loves working with young players, we would like to speak to you.  We are looking for candidates with previous and exemplary USAV, high school, or college coaching experience, or accomplished former USAV or college volleyball players who enjoy sharing their knowledge, experience, and love of the game with our young people.  Candidates must be able to teach fundamental individual skills, assess a team's strengths and weaknesses and then formulate and implement an effective plan for optimal develpment and success.  Candidates must also be able to communicate well with players, parents, and club management.   Our primary and foremost objective is to take the players we have and make them the very best they can be.  So if you're looking for a ready-made team to coach, we are not the club for you.

Coaches must also be able to pass a background check. If interested, please email the following to Kama Kalalau at

Our club practices are in the Tacoma/Spanaway/Puyallup area.  We have reserved gym times starting in November through May. Our practices can be any 1.5 to 2 hour block of time, 2-3 times per week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday nights from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Our main emphases are with the younger age groups, U12 to U16, and we will field 2 teams in each of those age groups. We will also field 1 U17 and 1 U18 team.

We have Regional and National level teams in each U12 to U16 age group. The National level teams will travel to USAV National Qualifiers, to USAV or AAU National Championships, the Volleyball Festival or a national level equivalent.  Traveling teams must fundraise and pay for the coaches' travel and lodging expenses to these end-of-season national level tournaments.  The Regional level teams will travel less and play in regionally sponsored events, but may also travel as an option.

The USAV season starts with tryouts in November, practices beginning immediately following tryouts, and tournaments beginning in January through the Regional Championships in April/early May. If a team qualifies for nationals, the team WILL participate in the National Championships.  If a team does not qualify for nationals, they may opt to participate in the Volleyball Festival instead or a national level equivalent.  Both events occur around the end of June through the first part of July.

Coaching Stipend: In our early years, our coaches received no stipend because coaching and working with our young players was their passion. As our club became more popular and our teams more competitive, we began offering coaches a modest stipend. Till today, our coaches still get a modest stipend to help compensate them for part of their valuable time and effort. But like the early years, we are still looking for coaches who coach because they love the game and love working with and sharing their knowledge with our young players.

If you don't have experience but have some knowledge of the game, love playing the game and love working with young players, you may start as a volunteer coach and we will assign you to work with a more experienced coach. Many of our great coaches started as volunteers. If you are looking for fame, fortune or glory, we are not the club for you.

Coaching stipends are commensurate with experience and a reliable and successful track record.  In addition to the monthly coaching stipend, any travel and lodging expenses for travel outside our region for multiple day tournaments are paid for by the team. Coaches' registration fees and mandatory training fees are all paid by the club. Paid and volunteer coaches also get a Power Surge tee, coach's jacket, or a polo coaching shirt.

Interested candidates should also email their resume/experience information (see below) to Kama Kalalau at
