Spanaway VBC: Summer League (U14-U18)
Spanaway VBC

WHAT:  This is a 3-month summer league program, not a week long clinic like most summer programs.  The purpose of this program is to provide players with an opportunity to stay in touch with the game and the competition throughout the summer, in order to improve their volleyball skills, and continue to gain valuable knowledge and experience.  The very best way to improve skills is targeted training over a long period of time, which is exactly what this program provides.  This program also includes our intense and highly effective ball control training.  Players and coaches know that the team that best controls the ball will control the match.  And whoever controls the match, wins.

Although we do play to win and there's no such thing as equal playing time, everyone gets to play as their knowledge and skills permit.  Because it is summer and many families go out of town on vacations, we will carry 12 to 16 players per team.

WHO:  Junior High/Middle School Girls (7th & 8th graders).  Our U13 & U14 players are all invited to play in this league, but keep in mind that this is a high school league and you must have adequate skills to play in this league.  This is not a league for beginners or first year club players who are still developing their basic skills.  Some exceptional players at the U12 or below age group may be invited to play if they have the skills, knowledge and appropriate experience.  If there's enough players, we will form a high school team and a junior high team.

COST:  For all Power Surge and Non-Power Surge players, the cost is $210 per player.  Payment due at the first practice or no later than May 31st.  Please see our "Team Practice" schedule for the latest Summer League practice schedule.  Write checks to Power Surge, mail to 15429 14th Ave Ct E, Tacoma, WA 98445.  You may also pay by credit card through PayPal.  Paypal fees do apply.

WHEN:  Monday evenings in June & July.  Be at the gym 30 minutes prior to the start of the first match of the evening.  See match dates/times...

UniformIn the beginning, this program was only for Power Surge players so the uniform was always the current year's Power Surge uniform.  But a few years after we started this program, players outside of Power Surge wanted to play on our summer league team too so they used their club's current jersey.  That looked a bit too tacky so now we have one Power Surge summer league jersey for the entire team, so everyone looks the same, like one team. The jersey will be issued to the players at the first match.  At the end of the season, please return the jerseys after the final summer league match.

Monday Evening League - Minimum of 2 matches per night, total 16 matches
June 8, 15, 22, 29, July 6, 13, 20, 27.  See match dates/times...

Wednesday Evening League - We will not field a team for this league

          1.  Email player's name, address, phone number, birthdate, current grade, and name of current school, to

          2.  Please print out the Medical Release/Registration Form and mail with your registration fee to Spanaway VBC, Attn:  Bonnie Kalalau, 15429 14th Ave. Ct. E., Tacoma, WA  98445.  This league fills up very quickly.  In order to secure a spot in this league, all interested participants need to respond by email ASAP and then mail the appropriate form and fee by 20 May (or bring to the first practice).

General Comments:  Most local high schools will have their Varsity and JV teams already entered in a similar summer league program.  If your high school team is entered in that league, you need to play for your high school team, Varsity on Monday evenings usually, and JV on Wednesday evenings usually.  However, some high schools may not enter a team in a summer league or may only enter their Varsity team and not their JV team.  If your high school is not already involved in a summer league program and you are going into the 9th through 12th grades next year, you are welcome to play with our Power Surge teams in this Pierce County summer league program.  In the past, some Power Surge players played with their high school team on Monday evenings and our Power Surge summer league team on Wednesday evenings, or vice versa.  Check with your high school's head volleyball coaches for their summer league plans and schedule.

PRACTICES:  Practices will be scheduled in May and most likely in June only, depending on the availability of the gyms . Once the league starts, practices may be discontinued and players just show up to play.  The practice schedule is posted on our website, please check our Team Practices link for the latest Summer League practice schedule or follow instructions by email.  We may schedule practices outdoors  (on grass or on sand at the beach) afer school gets out and also on some Saturdays as needed.  Dates, times and changes will all be posted on our practice webpage, so please check there often and definitely the day of and before you leave for practice.
