Over the years, the soccer community has recognized Mehlert as one of the top coaches and clinicians.
He is passionate about soccer and persistent in coaching his players and campers to play “good soccer.”
During his tenure as head coach, Mehlert developed the men’s soccer team at American University
into one of the most competitive programs in the country.
His AU teams have appeared in the NCAA Division I Final, as well as the Quarterfinals and the Sweet Sixteens.
In his 20 years of collegiate coaching, Mehlert has received numerous Coach of the Year honors
including NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year honor.
For many years he served as an assistant head coach as well as interim head coach of Region 1 ODP.
Over the years, Mehlert coached and trained many top youth travel teams.
These teams have won many championships in league and state cup play, as well as major tournaments.
Currently, he trains and coaches teams from U-8 to U-17, most of these teams are regular participants
in top flight/division of top ranked tournaments and leagues.
Coach Mehlert also had in the mid to late 70’s served as an assistant coach for the Washington Diplomats
and as a talent scout for the N. E. Teamen in the North American Soccer League.
Mehlert was twice an 1st team All-Met player at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, MD,
and an All-New England player and MVP while at Boston University. In 1998, he was inducted
into the American University Athletic Hall of Fame
