    Fri 6/26/09 5:45pm - 7:45pm Ashland: 4 - N. Chelmsford: 2 N.Chelmsfold@Ashland
from Metrowest Daily News 6-27-2009
Run support is a pitcher's best friend. Working with a comfortable lead can do wonders for a pitcher's performance during a game.
Last night against North Chelmsford, Ashland Post 77's Cato LaCroix didn't need his team to light up the scoreboard to have success. That came solely from his lights-out performance on the mound.
The Holliston High rising junior struck out six in a complete-game effort and retired the side in order in the final two innings to lead Ashland to a 4-2 win over their Zone 5 foes.
'For somebody so young, he really doesn't show it,' said Ashland manager Dennis Baker about LaCroix. 'That's really par for the course for him this season. He's been by far our best player and he's someone our kids look to to pick everybody up.'
Ashland (4-2), playing in its first game in nine days because of rainouts, recorded most of its offense in the fourth inning, getting three runs on two hits including a game-breaking Shawn Lamothe two-run double that gave Post 77 all the scoring it would need.
'We just felt like we needed to capitalize and give Cato another few runs,' Lamothe said. 'We just needed to put it in play and we were all set.'
LaCroix, who was batting .750 coming into last night's game, was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. A walk and a Tim Gazard single loaded the bases for Billy Hulme, who picked up an RBI by scoring LaCroix on a fielder's choice to make the score 2-1.
After Chris Papadellis grounded out to move the runners to second and third with two outs, Lamothe cranked a fastball to center field for a double to give Post 77 its key offensive hit of the night.
'My fastball was working especially good and I was able to throw my curveball for strikes and get batters out,' LaCroix said. 'I knew that (our scoring) would be enough and I felt good.' An Alex Cloutier RBI single gave Post 313 (1-4) its only lead of the day in the top of the first, but Ashland answered in the bottom half, getting a run on an Alex Anagnostaras RBI single that brought Lamothe home to knot the game at 1-1. North Chelmsford righty Mike Martell recovered to allow just one hit over the next two innings, but Ashland turned it back on in the fourth to put the game away. 'With Cato, it seems like a three- or two-run lead is a little bigger than that,' Baker said. 'Shawn Lamothe's hit was huge. It kind of gave us some breathing room and the margin of error kind of increased a little bit so that was nice. 'I knew that the way he (LaCroix) was throwing the ball that it would take a lot for them to come back.'
LaCroix, who gave up eight hits overall, surrendered a run in the fifth on a Mike Aronian RBI double to make the score 4-2 but it was the last hit he allowed. He retired the side in order in the sixth and started a game-ending 1-6-3 double play in the seventh to seal the win.
'He just pounded the zone all day and I tip my cap to him because there were a lot of times he was behind in the count and he wasn't afraid to go to his curveball,' said North Chelmsford manager Steve Burndrett. 'For us to be thrown in that situation, it was tough.'
After the nine-day gap between games, Baker was pleased with his team's effort in their return to the field. 'I was interested to see how we would come out,' Baker said. 'You can't simulate game intensity in practice ... and we were on a roll. We won a couple games then we had that long layoff ... everyone was getting sick of practice, sick of the rain and they really wanted to get back out and play.' Ashland Middle School (Old HS)
    Mon 6/29/09 6pm - 8pm Reading: 1 - Ashland: 2 Ashland@Reading
From MetroWest Daily News 6-30-2009
Maresca gem leads Ashland.
Alex Anagnostaras was 2-for-4 and had a single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning before Mike Maresca finished off a five-hit complete game to seal a 2-1 victory for Ashland over Reading in District 5 Legion play. Down 1-0 heading into the seventh inning, Mitch Corbitt walked for Post 77 and advanced to second on a two strike bunt from Chris Papadellis, who reached first base on an error. Shawn Lamont walked to load the bases, and Grady Capobianco hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game before Anagnostaras knocked in the go-ahead run. Morton Field, Reading
    Tue 6/30/09 5:30pm - 7:30pm Ashland: 0 - Sudbury: 3 Sudbury@Ashland
MetroWest Daily News 7-1-2009
SUDBURY 3, ASHLAND 0: Right-hander Derek Lowe pitched a complete game two-hit shutout and also had a single and a run at the plate to lift visiting Sudbury to a Zone 5B win over host Ashland. Post 191 (11-0) scored all three runs in the third inning as Matt Tatkow notched an RBI triple, Justin Quinn hit an RBI single and Erik Watkins added an RBI sacrifice. Ashland pitcher Mike Lamothe of Bellingham allowed just five hits in a complete-game effort for Post 77. Ashland Middle School (Old HS)
    Sun 7/5/09 5pm - 7pm Ashland: 12 - Lowell: 11 Lowell@Ashland
From MetroWest Daily News 7-6-2009
Down 11-0 heading into the sixth inning, Ashland Post 77 staged a dramatic comeback to walk off with the 12-11 win in the seventh inning on a bases clearing triple from Kyle Lavigne (3-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI). Starting pitcher Mike Maresca struggled, lasting only one inning, and Ashland used two other pitchers before Mitch Corbitt came on in relief to pitch 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball to get the win. Ashland sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh inning, with eight of them scoring. Shane Haney was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Tim Gazard was 1-for-3 with two runs. Ashland Middle School (Old HS)
    Mon 7/6/09 5:30pm - 7:30pm Ashland: 4 - Newton: 2 Ashland@Newton (Ashland is Home team)
From MeteroWest Daily News 7-7-2009
Mike Lamothe tossed a four-hitter and Kyle Lavigne delivered the game-winning triple for the second straight night as Ashland rallied to top Newton, for its fifth win in six Zone 5 matchups. Ashland (7-3) trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth when Shawn Lamothe doubled, Billy Hulme singled and Lavigne followed with a two-run triple. Lavigne, who capped a comeback with a three-run, seventh-inning triple in a 12-11 victory over Lowell on Sunday, added an insurance run when he came home on a errant pickoff throw to third. Tim Gazard's sac fly to center plated Shane Haney, who walked, in the fourth for Ashland's other run. Grady Capobianco and Shawn Lamothe each had two doubles, and Lavigne also had two hits. Lamothe (2-2) battled for the win after issuing eight walks. Lamothe got out of bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh by getting the lead runner at the plate on a fielder's choice, an infield pop out and a strikeout. Albemarle Field, Newton
    Thu 7/9/09 5:45pm - 7:45pm Ashland: 3 - Hudson: 4 Hudson@Ashland
From MetroWest Daily News 7-10-2009
In a game that featured strong pitching and timely hitting on both sides, it was the glove of Hudson Legion left fielder Billy Rundlett that made all the difference in Post 100's 4-3 win over Zone 5 rival Ashland last night. Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning with the one-run deficit, Ashland first baseman Tim Gazard came to the plate and with a full count drilled a Ryan Bowen fastball toward the left-center gap. Gazard seemed destined for extra bases, but Rundlett glided toward the gap and in a near collision with center fielder C.J. Ribeiro, made a miraculous diving grab to steal the hit away from Ashland. After catcher Chris Papadellis flew out to right, Shawn Lamothe crushed a double to center that would have tied the game for Ashland had Gazard been on base. Ashland got its baserunner, but Billy Hulme grounded out to second to end the game.

'That was just a huge catch,' said Hudson manager Blair Brissette. 'That's a big-league catch. Had that ball dropped it could have changed the game, and it was just a huge pickup for our pitcher and for the team. It was a great team win.' The loss was especially bitter for Ashland (7-4). Heading into the sixth inning with a 3-1 lead and Cato Lacroix on the mound, Post 77 looked to be in good shape. Then Ribeiro led off the inning with a shot to right that looked to be a home run but landed inches in front of the fence, giving the speedy center fielder a leadoff triple. Lacroix walked the next batter, and after striking out Caleb Larson, walked C.J. Flannery to load the bases for Hudson (5-6). Mike Ahearn followed up with a line drive to center that was dropped, allowing Ribeiro to score and sending Ashland manager Dennis Baker to his bullpen. Sean Ryan continued the inning with an RBI single that drove in King and tied the score at 3-3. With the bases still loaded, Mike Ryan lifted a ball to center just far enough to allow Flannery to tag up and score, giving Post 100 the go-ahead, and ultimately, winning run. 'It's a really tough loss,' said Baker. 'Up 3-1 with six outs to go and our best pitcher on the mound, I'd take that situation every time. They put some really nice at-bats together. Cato (Lacroix) didn't seem to have his best curve today, so they were sitting fastball and took some really nice cuts.' Earlier in the game, Ashland found itself in its own come-from-behind situation. After Ryan drove in Flannery with a single in the third inning, Ashland trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth. Hulme led off the inning with a double, and after Alex Anagnostaras was hit by a pitch, Lacroix helped himself with a double to right-center, driving in Hulme. Grady Capobianco then put a ground ball into the hole at short for a single that drove in both Anagnostaras and Lacroix for the 3-1 lead. That would be all the runs for Ashland as Hudson's gloves helped shut down Post 77 throughout the game. 'They played great defense,' said Baker. 'Right from the first batter, the whole game. I'll give them credit. That's pretty much the first game we've played like that, when the breaks didn't go our way.' Ashland remains in the hunt for the Zone 5 playoffs. Playing games every day through the end of the season on July 16, Baker insists that despite the loss, his team is right where they want to be. 'Our playoff outlook, even if we had won this game, still had us right in the thick of things,' said Baker. 'We've got some big games coming up. With so many games to play nothing is decided. This is a resilient group of kids, and they know night to night everything is different. 'The great thing about this game is we get to come back out here tomorrow with a chance to bounce back.'

Ashland rallies to beat Arlington in seventh
Pat Curtis went 3-for-4, with a game-winning two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning, as visiting Ashland rallied past Arlington 5-3 in a Zone 5 Legion matchup last night. Curtis finished with four RBI as Ashland (8-4) trailed 3-2 after six. In his first start this season, Kyle Lavigne allowed four hits and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings and also scored three runs, including the game-winner. Justin Birchler pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief for the win. Curtis staked Post 77 to a 2-0 lead with RBI singles in the first and fifth, plating Lavigne each time. To lead off the Ashland seventh, Chris Papadellis was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second by Shawn Lamothe. After Lavigne reached an error, Curtis laced his two-run triple. Curtis added an insurance run coming home on a wild pitch. Spy Pond, Arlington
    Sat 7/11/09 10am - 12pm Ashland: 5 - Billerica: 7 Billerica@Ashland
From MetroWest Daily News 7-12-2009
The Ashland Legion team let one slip away yesterday morning in its matchup with Billerica. The Post 77 offense pounded out 10 hits, but left 10 on base in a 7-5 defeat at the hands of Post 262. Ashland fell to 8-5 with the loss. Post 77's frustrating morning started early. In the bottom of the first, already trailing 1-0, Ashland loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and a walk. But the hosts only were able to get one run out of the threat on Billy Hulme's infield single, and left the bases loaded. In the second, Post 77's Jonathan Ho led off with a single and Chris Haddad reached on an error. Shawn Lamothe (3-for-4) brought in Ho with a double, and Pat Curtis plated Haddad with a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead. However, Billerica's Dan Desantis got clean-up hitter Alex Anagnostar to pop out to second. 'That game should've been 8-1 after the second inning,' said Post 77 manager Dennis Baker. 'It's just a game of missed opportunities. That was the difference.' Billerica tied the game in fourth with a pair of runs off Ashland starter Mike LaMotte (5 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 5 K). Post 262 recorded four hits in the inning with James Sorenson and Mark Huntley driving in runs. In the fifth, Billerica (8-3) added three more runs to take a 6-3 lead. Ben Mullin (triple) and Huntley (double) drove in runs in the inning. 'They hit the ball well,' Baker said. 'They took some good swings and hit some good pitches. They are a pesky hitting team.' In the bottom of the fifth, Ashland fought back with two runs off Desantis. With the bases loaded, Ho hit what looked like a double play to short. However, the ball hit a rock and bounced directly over the shortstop's head for a two-run double to draw Ashland within 6-5. Desantis quickly stopped the comeback by getting Haddad to ground out to second and getting Lavigne to strike out, stranding two more runners. 'He bore down when he needed to,' Post 262 manager Rich Gearin said. 'He's strong. He needs to have confidence and we made the plays behind him.' Post 262 added a run in the seventh off reliever Mike Maresca (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 K) on a sacrifice fly from Tommy Burke. Post 77 will enter the final week of the season fighting for a playoff spot. Baker said yesterday's loss was tough, but he has confidence his team will come back ready to play tomorrow. 'This loss stings, but there is a lot of baseball left,' he said. 'We play Monday through Friday. 'We need to take care of business next week. We didn't leave too much margin of error. But we can bounce back.' Ashland Middle School (Old HS)
    Mon 7/13/09 5:45pm - 7:45pm Ashland: 2 - Concord: 4 Concord@Ashland
From MetroWest Daily News 7-14-2009
Mike Maresca pitched well, going 5 2/3 innings while scattering 10 hits and striking out seven, but Ashland fell to Concord in a Zone 5 Legion matchup. Pat Curtis was 4-for-4 with a double for Ashland. Shane Haney and Chris Papadellis both went 2-for-3 for Post 77. Ashland Middle School (Old HS)
    Tue 7/14/09 6pm - 8pm Somerville: 11 - Ashland: 7 Ashland@Somerville Trum Field, Somerville
    Wed 7/15/09 6pm - 8pm Cambridge: 3 - Ashland: 14 Ashland@Cambridge
From MetroWest Daily News 7-16-2009
Kyle Lavigne was 4-for-5 with two home runs, seven RBI and three runs to lead Ashland to a 15-3 thrashing of playoff bound Cambridge in Zone 5 American Legion play. Cato Lacroix pitched six innings for Ashland, scattering nine hits and striking out six while going 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and a home run. Pat Curtis was 2-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs while Shawn Lamothe was 2-for-4 with two runs for Post 77. Billy Hulme also chipped in for Ashland, going 2-for-5 with an RBI, as well as Alex Anagnostaras, who was 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. Every Ashland starter had a hit, as the team strung 20 in total. Ashland (9-7) will play their last game tomorrow when they host Natick at 5:45. BBN Field, Cambridge
    Thu 7/16/09 5:30pm - 7:30pm Ashland: 4 - Natick: 5 Natick@Ashland
From MetroWest Daily News 7-17-2009
One team was fighting for its very playoff life. The other was just plain fighting with pride the motivating factor. In the end, Natick Legion (13-5) earned a spot in in the Zone 5 playoffs by holding off a gutsy Ashland team at Walker Field, 5-4. ``We're in now, we had to win,' said relieved Natick manager Bill Flutie. ``I tried to stay calm and keep the kids calm and confident, but I was a nervous wreck. We scored one more than they did and I'm happy. They're a good hitting team.' ``With not a lot to play for except pride, these guys gave it their all,' said Ashland manager Dennis Baker, whose team is 9-8 with its final game at home tonight (5 p.m.) against Tyngsboro. ``I loved the effort. We were down 5-0 against a good team and fought back to put us in a position to tie or win. That's all you can ask. I didn't expect anything else. We've battled all year long.' Natick jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Mike Russo reached on a one-out error ahead of a Brett Farrell walk. Both runners scampered home on a Joel Marsh single. The visitors made it 4-0 an inning later when Matt Sefton hit a one-out home run over the fence in left. Chris Hudson was hit by a pitch and came around to score on Brett Flutie's long double to left. ``Matt Sefton at the plate came up huge for us,' said Bill Flutie. ``It was a 3-and-2 count and I was sitting on a good fastball,' said Sefton. ``Their kid threw pretty hard so I used his power. I wasn't sure off the bat because this field is so big. But it felt good, probably the best ball I've hit this summer.' Natick made it 5-0 with a single run in the fourth inning off of reliever Mike (Moose) LaMothe. David Kortjohn and Sefton singled and Hudson walked to load the bases. The run scored when Flutie scorched a liner through the box that LaMothe got a glove on, redirecting the ball to his twin brother Shawn at shortstop. Shawn LaMothe flipped the ball to second baseman Bill Hulme, who fired it on to first for your average 1-6-4-3 double play. Kortjohn scored on the play. Two things happened after Kortjohn scored: LaMothe shut Natick out the rest of the way and the Ashland bats awoke. In the bottom of the fourth, Ashland pushed across a pair of runs. Pat Curtis reached on an infield error leading off and came in on a two-out double by Tim Gazard. Gazard later scored on Hulme's bad-hop single past third base. Ashland cut the deficit to one an inning later. Shawn LaMothe led off with a double into the left field gap. Kyle Lavigne reached on a fielder's choice and scored along with LaMothe on a two-out double down the right field line by Cato Lacroix. Mike LaMothe pitched so well in relief that Baker was second guessing himself for not starting him. ``Moose did a great job,' said Baker. ``I just wanted him to come in and keep it close, give us a chance to win. He did that and pitched so well that I was wondering if I should have started him. This might have been his best performance of the summer.' In five innings of work, LaMothe allowed two hits, struck out three and walked three. Brett Flutie got the pitching win with a solid relief effort from Ed Samp. ``Eddie Samp did a nice job in relief,' said Bill Flutie. ``He had pitched Sunday so he wasn't pitching on a lot of rest.' Natick is expected to begin playoff action on Sunday. Ashland Middle School (Old HS)
