Long time Pownal Volunteer wins National Award

Congratulations to Bill Butler for being named 2009 RBC Local Hockey Leader! Over the 14 years that Butler has volunteered with the Pownal minor hockey association he has worn the hats of executive, rink manager, committee member, equipment manager and coach. His fundraising efforts have contributed to the opening of a new arena (the Pownal Sports Centre in 2004) and to the founding of a team in the Prince Edward Island Minor Junior Hockey League – the Pownal Red Devils (Butler currently serves as coach and general manager).

Part of Bill's Award includes a $10,000 prize that will be donated to the Pownal Minor Hockey Association.

Bill and his wife Patti are pictured below being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Year End Ceremonies

Hello All!
The Pownal Minor Hockey season has come to an end for another year and it is time to have the year-end ceremonies. The closing ceremonies will be held on March 24, 2009 starting at 6:00 p.m. with a skate for the kids as this event is part of minor hockey.  Helmets are mandatory and each player is encouraged to wear a hockey jersey for this event.

Following the skate, there will be hockey game between our coaches and  the K-Rock hockey team. There are 23 teams from Squirts to Pee Wee in our Association and I am looking for one coach or official from each team to play on the team in order for this event to be successful. Please contact Ensor McNeill or Mark Derry to have your name on the roster.

The hockey game will follow the skate at 7:00 p.m. 8:30 p.m. with the kids in the stands cheering the coaches on (I hope). The plan is to have hot dogs, pop and other surprises for the kids during the game.

There will be some notices going up in the near future but if the coaches and team officials could get the word out that would be a great help.

There will be a collection of either food or monies for the Upper Room Food Bank at the door and all are encouraged to contribute as the need is great.
Any questions please call Kevin Burns at 569-2806 or 393-4786

2009 Rockethon Details

The 2009 Rockethon will be held on Sunday January 25th.

This message for Squirt-Novice-Atom and PeeWee coordinators. Please forward to your respective team managers. The schedule for the A tourney has been released and times for Rockethon assigned. The Squirt-Novice divisions will be on the Stadium side from 0950-1050. The Atom-PeeWee divisions will be on the Arena side from 1010-1110. Sunday, Jan 25th. General rules/guidelines are;

Squirt-Novice: Players to have full equipment on, no sticks. Goalies may want to wear "out" gear. Pownal jerseys. I would like one coach per Squirt team to go on the ice. Novice, one coach per team (available) to go on. Just to keep things in line.  Helmets required for coaches.

Atom-PeeWee: Players to wear helmets, neckguards and gloves. No sticks. Pownal jerseys.

Indvidual teams can pick what color jersey they want to wear. It would be nice to have an overall split of red/white though. I would also like to have at least one certified trainer in attendance and known to me during each ice time. Any volunteers? Just in case.
As this is going to be a busy weekend because of it being cross-over Sunday I would recommend the younger kids suit up at home and only put skates, helmets on at the rink. Dressing room space may be at a premium. Car-pool if you can. Team money collected stays with each team. I would like team managers to advise me by e-mail of amount collected by your respective team so I can have a total collected by PMHA. If any teams are not participating because of tournament conflicts, please let me know.

Players can have Rocket autograph programs, player cards, gloves etc but not their Pownal jerseys.  I hope everyone can make it out and have some fun with some PEI Rocket players and show them what great skaters we have in Pownal!  If you have any questions/concerns please let me know.

Please contact Ensor McNeill for more information - ensormcneill@eastlink.ca
