Vertical jump is an important athletic skill for all athletes.  It demonstrates an athletes explosiveness and power.  This means that you will be able to jump higher, get off the ground more quickly and reach your highest point faster.  It aides in acceleration and speed.  This quite obviously gives a distinct advantage because not only will jumping higher give you an edge over your opponent, but being more explosive will help you be quicker than your opponent and it also allows a shorter athlete play bigger and taller.
