Coming of Age
The 2008 Season was a period of transition for Fatburger Baseball.  The roster was completely overhauled.  Fatburger graduated a core of seniors that had been in the program for 2-3 years.  During the 2008 Try-outs the Fatburger Coaching staff elected to go young.  Rostering five sophmores and  ten juniors to mix in with one senior and two league aged college freshmen.  Fatburger went thru injuries like they were going out of style.  But as the summer wore on the group came into their own.  Travis Bradshaw (3rd year with Fatburger) and Joe Ledbetter gobbled up innings on the mound and Sophmore Tyler Kurfess & Junior Ryan Kopp started to really find there groove.  A back injury sidelined Sean Murphy which limited his pitching.  However, Ryan Vernon & Matt Shafer continued to deliver more innings which helped relieve some of the stress.  Chris Brinton was also called into action before injuring his back.  Chris has spent 3 years in the program and over those three years has given a tremendous effort.  Sophomore Shortstop Michael Russo led the team in plate appearances and began to settle in offensively and become a team leader.  Eric Ninomiya hit .375 and was the most productive RBI guy based on Plate appearances.  Eric missed the beginning of the season with...you guessed it an injury!  Danny Cavanaugh got better at the plate and at first base with each passing game.  Sophmore outfielder Matt Dusche went thru the ups and downs of being a sophomore but battled hard and grew alot during the season.  Junior outfielder Nolan Thomas set the record for walks and turned in a number of great catches in CF.  Junior 2B Brian Grina had some big hits during the season and brought a great attitude to the team.  Mr. Do everything Joey Allison had alot of "web" gems throughout the season.  Joey played infield & outfield.  Joey always had a smile on his face but inside he is a real competitor.  Which is the attitude this team began to embrace.  Down the stretch Fatburger won 7 in a row and finished 3rd in the Big Fat Deal.  Injuries to Alex Houghton (season) & Jacob Carpenter (most of the season) tested this young team.  Jacob was there for almost every game and his dedication to the team will never be forgotten.  He keeps a great book!  In the end this team had a great attitude and never slumped there heads.  The boys continued to work hard and as players like Sean Murphy and Eric were able to get the healthy the team started to really come together.  The 2008 Fatburger Team was a joy to coach and watch develop.  The coaching staff looks forward to the 2009 Season.
