Thunder - Thank You Letter
Summer 2001 The 16U Plaistow squad underwent a facelift this summer, as the team took the name "Thunder," leaving "Storm" for the 14U. The team primarily consisted of members of the 14U-B state champion Thunder that represented Plaistow at the National Tournament in Georgia in August of 2000. The Thunder continued their winning tradition in 2001 with 1st place finishes at the Keene Crickets Invitational Tournament and the Seacoast Girls Fast Pitch Softball Summer Tournament, 3rd place finishes at the Barbara Hamilton Invitational Tournament and the NH State ASA U-16 B Tournament, as well as a fourth place finish at NE Regional ASA U-16 B Tournament. The Thunder claimed a 6-1 regular season record and were 20-9 overall. The tournament was scheduled to be a National Qualifierr that would have allowed the Thunder to play in the ASA Nationals in Altamonte Springs, Florida in August. "Well, we'll just have to win the N.H. States next weekend and qualify that way", said Head Coach John Sherman. "The girls have had a goal of going to the Nationals again- we went two years ago as the State Champs- and that's what we'll try to do next week." Sunday, June 30 2002 Plaistow Thunder- State Champs AGAIN !!!! Plaistow Thunder won the N.H. U-16B State Championship this past weekend in Keene. The Thunder rallied to win 3 games in a row, including arch-rival Plymouth twice 8-4, 4-0. The games didn't finish until 1 AM Sunday morning. "These ladies are unbelievable- that's what I told them after the game", said Head Coach John Sherman. Catcher Katherine Underwood suffered a severe leg injury scoring what proved to be the Championship-winning run in the first inning, scoring on Colleen Kehoe's bunt after leading off the game with a triple. The team dedicated the game to Katherine and gave her the game ball. Now it's on to Florida for the Nationals!!! Tuesday, August 6 2002 Plaistow Thunder seeded #1 at Florida Nationals The Plaistow Thunder U-16B N.H. State Champs continued their winning ways by capturing a #1 seed at the ASA Nationals in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Thunder defeated the Hershey (PA) Bullets 2-1 and the Orlando (FL) Lady Knights 4-2. Laurie Garabedian & Lyndsay Morin led the offense, while Amanda Nye & Morin pitched the two victories. Colleen Kehoe, Alyssa Petrillo and Kelly Donahue led the defense, and the Thunder moves into the championship play tomorrow. Friday, August 9 2002 Plaistow Thunder finishes 6th at ASA Nationals The Plaistow Thunder finished an incredible season by capturing 6th place at the ASA U-16B National Championships in Orlando, Florida. After winning a #1 seed with a 2-0 record; the Thunder beat Bentonville, Ark 4-2; lost to eventual National Champions Tucker, Georgia 8-0; beat York, PA 3-2 (in 10 innings) but then ran out of gas, losing to the Chicago (ILL) Foxes 1-0. Co-Head Coach Dianne Nye said "It's be an unbelievable year. The girls accomplished their goal of not just playing at the Nationals, but being competitive at the Nationals... and now we're going to Disney World". Thunder History- 2002, Link to Geneva Foxes Thunder History- 2002, Thunder Ready to Storm into Softball Nationals Thunder History- 2002 State Brackets Plaistow Thunder vs. the Bentonville (Arkansas) Bullets Plaistow Thunder vs. the Bentonville (Arkansas) Bullets Aug 6, 2002 7:20 pm The Plaistow Thunder U16 NH State Champion B division softball team continued their trek through the Eastern National tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla. with a solid 4-2 victory over the Bullets from Bentonville Arkansas. The game, originally scheduled for a 9:00 am start eventually began on a muddy field at 7:20 pm as rain and thundershowers throughout the day kept both teams off the field. After field crews were finally able to get the fields into marginally playable shape, the tournament resumed. With Plaistow as the home team, the Bullets opened the top of the first getting the first runner on with a bunt single, and she was wild pitched to second. Another bunt single followed a strikeout putting runners on first and third with one out. The threat ended with Amanda Nye recording her second strikeout of the inning and Alyssa Petrillo making a strong throw on a ground ball to short getting the runner for the third out. In the Plaistow half of the inning, Kelly Donahue, just moved into the 2 spot in the order drew a one out walk, stole second base, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a Laurie Garabedian single. In the Arkansas second, an error and a double led to the tying run. In the top of the third, Arkansas scored again on a two-out single followed by a triple to take a 2-1 lead. In the Thunder half of the inning, two walks followed by an overthrow to first by the catcher scored the first of three runs in the inning. Jamie Beattie later had the big hit in the inning singling sharply driving in two and giving Plaistow the lead 4-2, which they never relinquished. With a walk and single followed by a passed ball, Arkansas had runners on second and third with two out when Alyssa Petrillo fired hard to first on a nice catch to get the final out leaving the Plaistow lead intact. Krista Teller was hit by a pitch in the Plaistow fourth but was caught off second for the second out of the inning. Kelly Donahue drew her second walk of the game but was stranded as Amanda Nye struck out to end the inning. In the Arkansas fifth, the Arkansas pitcher tried to ignite the Bullet offense with a two out blast to right center for a double. The rally was short lived as yet another ground out to pitcher Amanda Nye resulted in the final out of the inning. With a leadoff walk to Laurie Garabedian and a one out Aly Keenan single put runners on first and second the Bullet pitcher settled down and induced a fly ball to left and a tapper to the mound to end the inning. In the sixth, both teams went down 1 2 3. Lyndsay Morin replaced Amanda Nye in the seventh inning and retired the Bullets with two strike outs and an unassisted putout by Colleen Kehoe at second. Amanda Nye pitched six strong innings, giving up six hits, striking out 4 and issuing two walks. With her drop working throughout the evening, 12 of the 18 outs recorded were ground balls as she continued to baffle hitters. This was a game that was hard fought and played with intensity, but the best thing about it was that with the long rain delays prior to the start of the game, both teams had the opportunity to meet each other and become friends. That friendship was evident later in the tournament as Arkansas continued to cheer for their new friends even after theyd been eliminated, starting many cheers and letting the Plaistow players know they were there for them. Plaistow Thunder vs. the Tucker (Georgia) Elite Plaistow Thunder vs. the Tucker (Georgia) Elite Aug 6, 2002 11:00 pm With an 11:00 pm start due to rain delays throughout the day on Wednesday, the Plaistow Thunder U16 team looked tired in an 8-0 mercy rule shortened loss to the Tucker Elite club from Tucker, Georgia. The Tucker team included some of the players from the U-14 Tucker team that defeated Plaistow in the U14 Nationals in Marietta Ga. in 2000. Playing the game immediately preceding the Plaistow game, Tucker also defeated a team from Pennsylvania with a 6 inning mercy rule win. With Tucker as the home team, Plaistow went down 1 - 2 3 in the first inning and watched as Tucker jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their half of the inning. Tuckers leadoff hitter popped out to catcher Katherine Underwood who made one of her signature diving catches on a bunt attempt. Katherine was starting her first game of the tournament as she continued her comeback from a dislocated ankle injury suffered in the state tournament in Keene NH in late June. The number two Tucker hitter followed with a single. A 6-3 groundout had Plaistow in position to escape unharmed but the next batter hit a ground ball to second that was misplayed into an error bringing up the number 5 hitter in the Tucker order. Wasting no time, she jumped on the first pitch and sent it sailing over the fence in left. Instead of matching zeroes at the end of one, the score was Tucker 3, Plaistow 0 and it never improved for the Thunder. Plaistow was only able to muster two hits and put two runners on via walks as the Tucker team played flawless defense. After Plaistow settled down to hold Tucker scoreless in the second and third innings, Tucker struck for two in the fourth, one in the fifth and 2 in the sixth to meet the ASA mercy rule criteria of an 8 run lead after five innings to finish the game. Amanda Nye went the distance for Plaistow. Tucker was able to bang out 12 hits and was aided by three Plaistow errors. Nye recorded three strikeouts and did not give a base on balls. This loss put Plaistow in the losers bracket. With the game ending at 12:30 am and their next starting time at 9:00 am that morning, the Thunder would have to get some abbreviated sleep and get right back to the field to continue their quest for the East National title. Plaistow Thunder vs the York (Pa) Shockwave Plaistow Thunder vs the York (Pa) Shockwave Aug 7, 2002 9:00 am In a 9:00 am start Thursday morning, the Plaistow Thunder U-16 team met the York, Pa. Shockwave. Lyndsay Morin got the start for Plaistow. This was a significant game for Morin as she has been recovering from off season shoulder surgery to repair a partially torn bicep muscle in her throwing arm. With lass than 10 innings pitched on 2002, Morin was going to have to rely on her full repertoire of pitches to get by in this game. Plaistow won the toss and was the home team for this game. The Shockwaves were able to get an opposite field single in the first but were otherwise shut down in the first on two strikeouts and an unassisted groundout to first. After Plaistow went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first, the Shockwaves struck first in the top of the second inning in a very unusual way. With runners on first and third via a leadoff double and a dropped popup on a tough blooper over the first base bag, Morin had the ball slip out of her grasp during her windup resulting in an illegal pitch- scoring the runner from third and advancing the other runner to second. A walk and a single followed loading the bases but further damage was averted as Morin struck out the Shockwaves number 2 hitter on a sharp rise ball. With renewed life, Plaistow held the Shockwaves without a runner for the next two innings as Amanda Nye came on in relief of Morin to get the Shockwaves in order in both the sixth and seventh innings with a strikeout and two groundouts in each inning. Unfortunately, Plaistow couldnt muster any offense in their half of either inning as the game went into extra innings tied 1 - 1. ASA tie breaker rules place the batter who made the last out of the previous inning on second base to begin each extra inning. The Shockwaves plated the runner from second as the leadoff batter bunted for a single and the throw to first went over Keenans head for an error. Nye settled down and struck out the next batter swinging, induced a ground ball to second for the second out and got a tapper back to the mound for the third out. In the Plaistow half of the inning, Jamie Beattie started at second base and scored on a long single to center by Underwood. Before her ankle injury, Underwoods speed would have turned the long single into at least a double, but hobbled as she is, the single would have to do. Pinch runner Krista Teller was forced at second for the first out of the inning with Alyssa Petrillo reaching on the fielders choice. A popup to second and a ground ball to second ended the inning with the score now tied 2 2. In the top of the 9th Nye struck out the first batter, induced a tapper back to the mound with the runner advancing to third then ended the inning with a nice catch and tag at first base by Aly Keenan. In the bottom of the 9th, Kelly Donahue started on second base. The number three hitter Amanda Nye then sacrificed Donahue to third. Laurie Garabedian stepped to the plate and ripped a long line drive over the head of the center fielder who made a remarable recovery on the ball snaring it with a nice over the head catch going away. Donahue was caught half way down the line and had to return to third with there now being two outs. Lyndsay Morin stepped to the plate as the Shockwaves coach called timeout to discuss the defensive alignment with his team and to give his pitcher a little rest. It was all to no avail as Morin reached out and slapped the first pitch sharply to center for the game winning RBI. It was a great way to end the game as both Plaistow pitchers were sharp throughout and the defense came up with all of the big plays when they were needed. The last inning also provided hope that the bat in the middle of the order would come to life and help advance the team through the next round. For Plaistow, Underwood led the offense with two hits with Jamie Beattie, Aly Keenan and Lyndsay Morin each getting a single. Plaistow pitching recorded 10 strikeouts in the game with Morin whiffing 6 in her five innings and Nye fanning 4 in four innings of work. Plaistow Thunder vs. the Geneva Foxes of Chicago Ill. Plaistow Thunder vs. the Geneva Foxes of Chicago Ill. Aug 8, 2002 3:00 pm In the second round of the losers bracket, Plaistow came up against a strong team from the Chicago area, the Geneva Foxes. The Foxes were in the losers bracket by virtue of a loss to the Orlando Lady Knights, a team the Thunder had beaten 4 2 in the pool play round of the tournament. With Plaistow as the visiting team and leading off the first inning, the bases were quickly loaded on a two out error on the left fielder on a fly to short left by Amanda Nye, a walk and a Lyndsay Morin single. The threat died as the next batter struck out. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Thunder would come to scoring for the rest of the game as the Geneva Foxes played error free ball as their pitcher induced many weak ground balls out of the Plaistow batters. Geneva scored the only run of the game in the home half of the first as Plaistow started slowly defensively with two infield errors. A bunt advanced the runners to second and third and a wild pitch scored the runner from third. A popup and a groundball to short ended the inning but the damage was done. Although making contact in every inning, Plaistow couldnt put anything together offensively. A Petrillo single in the second left her stranded at first, and a leadoff single by Morin in the fourth didnt amount to anything. After a one out walk to Kelly Donahue in the fifth inning, Plaistow couldnt put another runner on board as the Geneva Foxes closed out the game with 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh. Amanda Nye went the distance for Plaistow pitching a terrific game, going six innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out three. Thus the tournament ends for Plaistow with a 4 2 record. Plaistows win in the pool play round of the tournament came over two strong teams, one from Hershey Pa that ending up finishing 2nd in the tournament. The other win was over a local team from Orlando with players from 8 different high schools in the Orlando area making up the club. Thunder wins- even in Winter The Plaistow Thunder Girls Softball Team finished an extremely successful season in the Epping Indoor Girls Softball League. The Thunder finished with a 17-1-1 record. We were undefeated last year, said Coach John Sherman. Plus we were undefeated two years ago during the winter indoor session in Danvers Mass. So we have won something like 38 of our last 40 indoor games. This years team consisted of; Jamie Beattie of Sandown, Kaitlyn Boyle of Atkinson, Renee Clavette of Danville, Megan Crepeau of Plaistow, Sarah Duprat of Litchfield, Leslie Fichera of Plaistow, Collen Kehoe of Sandown, Miranda LeBlanc of North Hampton, Kate MacKinnon of Atkinson, Lyndsay Morin of Danville, Katherine Underwood of Plaistow, and Caitlin Weston of Danville. The team consists primarily of girls from the Timberlane School District. We do it as a way of getting ready for the high school and summer seasons. This indoor High School-age league has gotten more competitive each year and consists of teams from Concord, Manchester and Dover, as well as local teams from Raymond, Candia and Exeter added Assistant Coach Kate Sherman. Its great to see these young ladies make such an off-season commitment to improve their skills. Some of our games are as early at 7:00 AM on a Sunday morning. Thats commitment. Keene article (2001) The Plaistow Thunder Under-16 Girls Softball Team captured first place at the prestigious Keene Crickets Invitational Softball Tournament. The tournament includes the top girls softball teams from all over New England. The Thunder won the championship game in the bottom of the 8th (1-0) as Jessica Gearhart scored the winning run on hits by Kelly Donahue and Holly Winchell. The Thunder was led by the power hitting of Laurie Garabedian, the defense of catcher Katherine Underwood and the dominating pitching of Lyndsay Morin who allowed only two runs in the tourney. The Plaistow Thunder also won the Seacoast Girls League Championship by defeating defending champion Rochester Slammers twice in Rochester. The Thunder won the championship game 3-1 as Katherine Underwood singled home Colleen Kehoe and Holly Winchell with the game-winning runs. Lyndsay Morin continued her dominant pitching only allowing two base runners in the final game after earlier shutting out Rochester in a preliminary game. The Thunder recently finished third in the Barbara Hamilton Tourney in Hudson, losing to the eventual champion Maine Silver Sluggers in the semi-finals. The New England Class A Champion Mass Hot Shots finished second. The Thunder had earlier defeated the Raymond Devils 18-1, the Hudson Heat 10-1, and the Merrimack Magic 15-5. The red-hot Thunder bats were finally quieted by the Silver Sluggers extremely deep and talented staff. We were tied with the Sluggers 1-1 in the 7th, but the depth of the Sluggers finally caught up to us. They had added two top pitchers to their staff for the tournament and thats why they were able to beat us and the N.E. Champion Hot Shots., said Coaches John Sherman and Dianne Nye. Bright spots in the tourney were Amanda Nye who was on base 8 straight at bats, and the hitting of Alyson Keenan and Jamie Beattie-who had many big hits for the Thunder. I was also particularly impressed with Alyssa Petrillo, who stepped in at third base and did a great job for us with a bunch of important hits, said Coach Sherman. And Jill Crotts got a chance to play and contributed to our offense. The Plaistow Thunder finished a disappointing 3rd in the State Tourney. They also traveled to the N.E. regional championships and finished 4th after being eliminated by the eventual champions. We could have won that tournament. We were the only team to beat the N.E. champs, but we lost a tough game after leading 5-1 and that set us a back a bit. said Coach Sherman. One of the highlights of the regular season was traveling to Hampton and beating the state champion Hampton Breakers in a twi-night doubleheader, 5-3 & 12-5, led by Sarah York, Kelly Donahue and Jamie Dever.. Im sure we are the best team in the state- it just didnt work out for us at the State Tourney. So it was nice to beat Hampton. As a matter of fact, we beat them every time we played them. said Coach Sherman. Bulldog article (2002) The Plaistow Thunder Under-16 Girls Softball Team captured first place at the prestigious Bulldog Invitational Tournament in Waterville, Maine, this past weekend. The Thunder won the championship game in the bottom of the 7th inning of the Championship Game (2-1) as Jamie Beatties single to left scored Amanda Nye with the tournament-winning run. Nye led off the inning by reaching first on a hit. After two outs she moved to second on a hit by Alyson Keenan, before scoring on Beatties clutch hit to left field. We fell behind in each of the four games we played said Coach John Sherman. But these young ladies never give up and we staged rallies in every game. In the first game, Laurie Garabedians triple to right field scored Nye with the winning run as the Thunder beat the East Coast All-Stars 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th. We havent played many games yet, so our hitting was a little rusty, said assistant coach Dianne Nye, but our defense led by Alyson Keenan and Alyssa Petrillo really kept us in the game until Katherine Underwood and Colleen Kehoe got huge hits to get us started. In the second game, the offense came to life, led by Kelly Donahues bases clearing triple, as the Thunder beat Skowhegan, Maine, 10-5. The defense, led by catcher Katherine Underwood and third baseman Laurie Garabedian, held tight as the Thunder rallied from a 4-0 deficit. This is when the offense came to life scoring 10 runs in 3 innings. We get a lot of runners on base said Coach John Sherman. Meg Crepeau and Amanda were on base a couple of times each. Then when the middle of our line up starts hitting like they did this weekend, we are a very tough team to beat. With Laurie Garabedian, Lyndsay Morin, Alyson Keenan, Jamie Beattie and Kelly Donahue hitting like they were, we can do a lot of damage. After losing their only game 9-6, the Thunder won the Tourney by again beating Skowhegan 2-1. Amanda Nye pitched all 4 games and did a great job. She recorded 7 outs in a row, including 4 consecutive assists on plays to first. She looked like soccer goalie, as the other teams were trying to hit the ball hard up the middle, but they couldnt get it by her, said Coach Sherman. We are breaking some players in at new positions, so our defense will be a little inconsistent until we iron out some details. But all of these kids love to play and they will work hard to master the new positions. We cant wait to play in the State Tournament in Keene this weekend. State Champs article (2002) The Plaistow Thunder Under-16 Girls Softball Team won the American Softball Association N.H. State Championship this past weekend in Keene, N.H. This is the second state title for the Thunder as they won the Under-14 N.H. State title two years ago. These young ladies are unbelievable, said Coach John Sherman. Thats what I told them after the championship game. They refused to quit, they refused to lose, even after everything was against them. We had the toughest draw in the tourney. The championship game finished after midnight on Saturday. We had to play 4 games in a row. We started at about 5 P.M. on Saturday and just kept playing. We were already short-handed due to injuries and we lost our lead off hitter and starting catcher, Katherine Underwood to a leg injury in the first inning of the championship game, plus our first baseman, Alyson Keenan was playing on one leg with a strained muscle. But we refused to give in. Plaistow won their first game Friday Night at 9 P.M. by beating Goffstown 11-4. The Thunder offense was awesome as a total of 7 different players scored and the team scored in every inning. Katherine Underwood scored 3 runs, Colleen Kehoe and Laurie Garabedian scored two each. Garabedian was on base 4 times. Then at 5 P.M. on Saturday, the Thunder lost to Plymouth 4-0. Plymouth scored 4 times in the first inning and the Thunder offense never got cranked up. Alyssa Petrillo and Amanda Nye kept the team in the game with great defense. Amanda Nye pitched and retired 13 batters in a row at one point, but it wasnt enough. The Thunder battled back in the next game to beat Goffstown again, this time 3-2. It didnt look good, said assistant Coach Dianne Nye. We were behind 2-1 going into the 7th and we were one inning from being eliminated. But Megan Crepeau scored the tying run and Jamie Beattie scored the winning run. The defense, led by Krysta Teller and Alyson Keenan played great, which allowed us to rally for the win. This setup the situation where Plaistow had to beat arch-rival Plymouth twice in a row to win the championship. The Thunder won this first game 8-4. The Thunder scored 2 runs in the first and third, but Plymouth answered each time. Then in the fourth Kelly Donahue made a great play to throw the Plymouth lead off batter at 2nd base. Looking back at it, that was a huge play, said Coach Sherman. That stopped them. Plymouth never scored again in that game or the next game. Amanda Nye was on base 4 times and scored 3 runs, and Laurie Garabedian scored two runs. Jamie Beattie got the big hit to right field to put the Thunder ahead for good. At this point, the games were running late, so the Championship game started at 11 P.M. The Thunder captured their 2nd State Championship by beating Plymouth 4-0. After tripling to right field, Katherine Underwood scored the first (and winning) run on a bunt by Colleen Kehoe in the bottom of the first. Katherine injured her right leg and the game was delayed while an ambulance was called to transport her to the local hospital. At that point, the girls decided to dedicate the game to Katherine. There was no way they were going to let her down, said Coach Sherman. Jamie Beattie came in to catch and Kaitlyn Boyle took her spot in the outfield. We are carrying fewer players than in previous years, so we have to be very careful making substitutions, but all of our players contribute to our success. Amanda Nye just took over the game at this point. She was pitching her fourth straight game without a break, but she and Katherine are best friends and there was no way she was letting Katherine down. The Thunder put the game away in the 6th inning as Alyson Keenan got the big hit to score Kaitlyn Boyle to clinch the victory. At this point, Alyson was playing on one leg, said Coach Nye. But we had to have her in there for her defense and she has a huge heart. This was the best kind of team victory, said Coach Sherman. Everyone contributed. At the end, we only had 10 available to play any defense. We are a terrific hitting team, but pitching and defense wins games and championships. The right side of our infield, Alyssa Petrillo and Alyson Keenan, was sensational. Between the two of them and Amanda, they must have made half of the defensive outs in the tournament. And Lyndsay Morin was a big contributor. She was only able to DH, since she is still recovering from arm and shoulder surgery. But shes like having another coach on the bench, plus she got some big hits and loves to lead the team cheers- which we are famous for. Amanda Nye pitched every inning of the 5 games, including the 4 back to back to back to back. She only allowed 5 walks in the 35 innings, plus she was the best defensive player in the tournament. She didnt get to pitch much during the past year, but she has worked hard and is a terrific player. After the game ended at about quarter to 1:00 AM, we had to find Katherine and tell her the news, said Coach Nye. So all of the players and parents went to the hospital in a caravan. She had already been released, but we tracked them down at the local Dunkin Donuts. So we all went there and Amanda gave her the game ball and Kelly showed her the championship trophy. She was thrilled that we had won. We celebrated for a while in the Dunkin Donuts parking lot and didnt get home until about 4 AM Sunday morning. What a great group of young ladies.
Representing the town of Plaistow, the state of NH, and the New England region, the 14-U Class "B" state champion Plaistow Thunder competed at the 14B National tournament in Georgia during the second week of August. Here are the results on their success at this prestigious tournament: The Thunder won both the spirit and hula hoop contests at the welcome party at the water park on Monday (8/8) evening. Great job girls! The team took their first game with an impressive 6-1 victory over the Velocity of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Amanda Nye seemed to be on base all night, while Lyndsay Morin and Ally Keenan hit big doubles. The defense played well throughout the game. The only run by the Velocity was unearned in the 5th inning. The game was called after the 6th inning due to the time limit. The Thunder played a few more games, but were ousted in the double-elimination tournament early-on. Still, just reaching the National tournament is a huge success! Great job girls! For pictures from the tournament, head to the "Thunder 2000" portion of the Photos & Graphics section.
The season officially wrapped up with the end-of-season cookout held at the Smith Rec. Field in Plaistow on Sunday, August 20th, from about 4pm to 7pm. Members of all the Plaistow squads met for food, a parent vs. daughter softball game, an egg toss, and some awards.
