Plaistow Sparks Capture 2nd place at Nor’Easters Tourney
The Under-16 Plaistow Sparks went 5-2 to capture 2nd out of 16 teams at the prestigious Nor’Easters Invitational Softball Tourney in Laconia, NH.

“It’s a terrific way to end a great season” said Assistant Coach Kate Sherman. “We’ve had a wonderful season and this group of young ladies has been amazing. What a great way to finish.”

The Sparks lost their first game to the Somersworth Thunderkatz- the eventual tournament winner- by a 2-1 score. Stephanie Barrett pitched the complete game for the Sparks, but some shaky first inning defense put the team in a 2-0 hole. The Sparks got one back as a single to center by Kristin Crotts scored Stephanie Glazier, but it wasn’t enough. The Sparks had runners on in every inning but couldn’t push across the tying run.

The Sparks bounced back to defeat the Stoughton, Mass Renegades 4-2 behind the pitching of Danielle LeMay. Anne Hansbury scored the go ahead run on a triple to left center and Brittany Vater followed with an insurance run after reaching on a double. Amy Green and Kristin Crotts scored the first two runs. Corey Sheehan reached base twice.

The Sparks finished the first day’s pool play by defeating the tough Vermont Sharks 8-6. The Sparks had an 8-2 lead and held on for the victory. Stephanie Glazier and Brittany Schomburg scored two runs each. Amy Green reached base 3 times. Corey Sheehan played a strong game behind the plate.

On Sunday, the Sparks started elimination play by defeating the Bennington Vermont Bandits 4-0. Barrett pitched the complete game victory. The Sparks runs were scored by Courtney Marchand, Kristin Crotts, Brittany Vater and Amy Green. At one point Barrett retired 15 Bandits batters in a row, without the ball leaving the infield. The infield defense of Stephanie Glazier, Amy Green, Anne Hansbury, Kristin Crotts and Barrett was especially tough. Courtney Marchand reached base twice, coming back from a minor injury the day before.

Next the Sparks defeated the Vermont Sharks 5-4 in a game that wasn’t decided until the last batter grounded out to Amy Green with the tying run on 3rd. The sparks led 5-2, but the Sharks rallied for 2 in the 7th to put a scare into the Sparks. Barrett pitched the complete game victory. Brittany Schomburg, running for Brittany Vater, scored two runs and Nichole Schomburg, Jill Bolduc and Anne Hansbury scored one each.

This brought the most exciting game of the day as the Sparks defeated the Stoughton Renegades 6-5 in extra innings. The lead changed hands 7 times in the memorable game.   The Sparks finally won the bottom of the 8th as Nichole Schomburg scored on a sacrifice fly by Kristin Crotts, after Amy Green executed a perfect bunt to move Schomburg to third. Green reached base all 4 times at bat and Schomburg scored twice to pace the offense. Barrett came on in relief of LeMay even though exhausted from pitching the two previous games. “We needed to mix it up a bit on the Sharks to upset their timing,” said Head Coach John Sherman. “Stephanie really dug down deep and pitched tough to hold the Sharks at bay.”

This third victory of the day put the Sparks into the final championship game where they lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Somersworth Thunderkatz. The Sparks had runners in scoring position nearly every inning but couldn’t push the tying run across. Samantha Spence had a great at bat in the 7th to get on base, but the Sparks weren’t able to score the tying run. LeMay pitched a phenomenal game in holding the powerful Thunderkatz to just one first-inning run. The Sparks played great defense with Jill Bolduc making a great catch in right field to prevent a game-breaking home run.

“We had a great season,” said Coach Sherman. “We are the State Champions, we finished 2nd in the N.E. Regionals and now 2nd in the Nor’Easters Invitational. We played against some extremely strong teams in the Whitten Memorial Tourney in Portland, the Just Play It in Hudson the Xtreme Challenge in Rochester and in some weeknight exhibition games. All of this made us a better team and stronger individual players- which was our goal this season. This is a great group of young ladies and the parental support has been amazing. I especially want to thank Sean Crotts, Bob Glazier and Pete Barrett for stepping forward and helping as Assistant Coaches this year. They all contributing in making us a stronger team and they were great with our players.”

Plaistow Sparks Captures 2nd at New England Regionals
2005 Regionals
The Under-16 Plaistow Sparks played inspired softball to finish 2nd (out of 16 teams) at the ASA Regionals in Rochester, N.H.

“We were excited to do so well,” said Assistant Coach Kathleen Sherman. “The girls goal was to win the Regionals, but given we are such a young team- this is a terrific accomplishment. We have only 1 16 year-old, 2 15 year olds, 7 14 year olds and even 3 13 year olds.”

The Sparks started out by defeating the Maine #2 team - the Blue Demons by a 6-2 score. Stephanie Barrett pitched the complete game victory. Amy Green scored 2 runs, and Anne Hansbury reached base 3 times, including a booming triple to right field. Jill Bolduc had the key RBI single. The game was postponed to 8 AM on Saturday morning, after a torrential downpour eliminated Friday night’s play.

The Sparks next defeated the Somerset (Mass) Wildcats 4-3 in extra innings. Stephanie Barrett, pitching in relief of Danielle LeMay, struck out the final 3 batters in the bottom of the 8th with the tying run in scoring position. LeMay held the Wildcats scoreless for the first 4 innings. The Sparks took a 3-run lead into the bottom of the 7th before some shaky defense allowed the Wildcats to tie the game. Anne Hansbury, Brittany Vater and Jill Bolduc scored the first 3 runs and Stephanie Glazier scored the game winner in the 8th.

This qualified the Sparks for the semi-finals, where they lost to eventual tournament winner Hudson (Mass) Demolition 6-1. Courtney Marchand scored the Sparks only run in their 3rd game of the day. Starting at 8 in the morning, the Sparks wrapped up play at about 8 PM at night.

This knocked the Sparks into the loser’s bracket where they made an amazing recovery on Sunday.

Starting at 8 AM again, the Sparks defeated the Vermont Sharks 5-2, behind the complete game pitching of Barrett. Nichole Schomburg hit two triples and scored two runs to pace the offense.    Brittany Vater reached base all 3 times at bat including a booming double to left center that nearly cleared the fence. Corey Sheehan stepped in behind the plate, to relieve Vater of some catching duties and Brittany Schomburg was an effective DH as the Sparks prepared for a possible long day of softball.

Next, the Sparks defeated the Reading (Mass) Raptors, by 11-2. Danielle LeMay pitched the Sparks to victory as the Sparks came alive on offense. Kristin Crotts, Jill Bolduc and Courtney Marchand scored 2 runs each, with Crotts and Marchand each reaching base 3 times. Corey Sheehan made huge contributions allowing the Sparks to rest some tired players.

The Sparks then played their most amazing game, defeating the highly-touted Brewer (Maine) Wicked Witches by an 8-5 score. The was the Sparks 3rd straight game against tough competition and Sparks pulled out the see-saw battle. After falling behind 2-0, the Sparks rallied for 4 runs, only to see Brewer re-take the lead 5-4. The never-say-die Sparks rallied for 4 in the bottom of the 5th to take an 8-5 that they would not relinquish. Amy Green scored 2 runs, to pace the offense as 7 different Sparks players scored. The Sparks only recorded one strikeout, but the Sparks played tremendous defense. Courtney Marchand made a great throw from center field to kill a late Brewer rally.

The title chase ended as the Sparks lost to the Hudson Demolition 10-2 in their 4th straight game of the day. Samantha Spence led the offense with 3 hits, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“This was an amazing accomplishment by a very young U-16 team. Their goal was to win the Regionals and I am proud of the effort they made,” said Coach Sherman. “Every team we played was older and bigger, some much bigger, but we played with heart and intelligence.”

“Our core starters (Stephanie Glazier, Nichole Schomburg, Amy Green, Kristin Crotts, Anne Hansbury, Brittany Vater, Jill Bolduc, Stephanie Barrett and Courtney Marchand) played great. And Samantha Spence, Corey Sheehan, Danielle LeMay and Brittany Schomburg all made key contributions when their time came.   What a great group of young ladies.”

The Sparks next tournament is the Nor’Easter Classic in Laconia July 29-31.

Plaistow Sparks Softball ties for 5th at the Whitten Memorial Tourney
The Under-16 Plaistow Sparks went 2-3 at the Eric Whitten Memorial Tourney in Portland Maine.

“We were looking for some stronger competition,” said Head Coach John Sherman. “This is exactly what we needed. Our tourney record wasn’t that great but we played very well against some strong teams.”

The Sparks started out by losing to the Southern Maine Flame 5-3 on Friday. The Sparks lead 3-0 behind the strong pitching of Stephanie Barrett before some shaky defense allowed the Flame back into the game. Brittany Vater, Corey Sheehan and Courtney Marchand scored the Sparks runs.

On Saturday, the Sparks bounced back to defeat the Westford Wildcats 11-3. Danielle LeMay pitched the complete game victory. Nichole Schomburg, Anne Hansbury and Jill Bolduc scored two runs each to pace the offense. Amy Green had a big triple. The Sparks had lots of runners on base as Stephanie Glazier and Jill Bolduc reached three times each and Brittany Schomburg reached twice.

Next, the Sparks lost to the Reading Renegades 5-3. Stephanie Barrett pitched a strong game against the team that ultimately finished second in the tourney. Jill Bolduc again reached three times but it wasn’t enough.

On Sunday, the Sparks played a great game defeating the host Maine Attraction by a 12-4 score. LeMay and Barrett shared the victory over the Maine State Class A Champions. Kristin Crotts, Anne Hansbury and Courtney Marchand each scored two runs. Brittany Schomburg had a bit hit to help pace the Sparks.

The Sparks Cinderella run ended as the Sparks next lost to the eventual tournament champions- the Seacoast Cougars by a 2-1 score in extra innings. Stephanie Barrett was the hard luck loser in pitching all 8 innings. Anne Hansbury led the offense with a double and a triple and scored the Sparks lone run on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Vater. Amy Green was on base 3 times and Corey Sheehan twice, but the Sparks couldn’t push across the winning run.

“Overall, we were disappointed, but still excited that we play such good softball against such tough competition,” said Coach Sherman. “We had 1 16 year-old and 1 15 year-old with the rest 14 or 13 and we are playing against high school juniors and seniors. But we know it will make us stronger players, which is our goal this year.”

The next tournament for the Sparks is the ASA Regionals in Rochester the weekend of July 22-24.
