Puffins Steal One from the Bandits
With the sounds of the trains piercing the bone-chilling air, the Puffins
defeated the Columbus Bandits 5-2 in a POWHA match-up on Saturday night at
Columbus Chiller Ice Works.
The Puffins were outnumbered but never outmatched. The Bandits dressed 18
players while nine Puffins traveled to Ohio. With this short line-up,
Coaches Ben and Jeff decided to go with 3 on defense and use two lines.
Sue, Laura and Jan rotated on defense while Gretchen centered Britney and
Lynne and Terri skated with Dara and Marcia. The Bandits scored first. The
Puffins battled back and tied the game near the end of the first period.
Three goals were scored in the second as the Puffin and Bandit fans waved
their game programs, yelled, blew their horns, displayed their PUFFINS
letters, and stomped their feet. The small contingent of Puffin fans met
the good-hearted challenge of the Bandit supporters. The vocal fans
responded to the fierce action in front of the Bandit goalie and spectacular
saves by Lynn at the other end. By the end of the period, the game had
settled into a defensive struggle, highlighted by Dara checking a Bandit
player at the blue line and making her airborne. It was 3-2 after 2.
The third period opened with an impressive slap shot by Marcia that just
missed the net but got everyones attention. The Puffins dominated the
penalty-filled period with two more goals to defeat the Bandits 5-2.
In post-game interviews, the players echoed each other as they wanted to
congratulate Lynne on her excellent debut as a forward. Hats off to
Britney, that scoring machine and MVP, who scored three goals as her father
cheered from the stands. Goals were also scored by Terri and Marcia, whose
mother and local relatives were also in attendance. Assists were credited
to Lynne and Terri. The defenses MVP was awarded to Laura. P U to
Gretchen, Britney, and Dara for their trips to the penalty box. Gretchens
mom, aunt and uncle traveled to the game to see her in action. Lynn, despite
the absence of her number one fan Chuck, have a .925 save percentage, as the
Puffins were outshot 27 to 23.
This report would not be complete without a description of the Chiller Ice
Works. As you drive into the parking lot, you pass a sign that reads ICE
WORKS. NO FRILLS JUST CHILLS. No truer words were ever spoken. With the
appearance of an igloo, the facility is a huge, white tent held together
with metal ribs and is located near the railroad tracks. It is as basic and
cold as anything in Mystery, Alaska. It comes with four fragrant locker
rooms, a snack bar, questionable bathrooms, a vending machine for soft
drinks and hockey tape, and a skate sharpening service of $7.00 now or $5.00
later. Fans have the option of standing next to the glass or sitting on the
metal bleachers. Thanks to Sue for allowing this guest reporter to use her
seat cushion that literally saved her butt.
