The Game That Was Never Meant To Be Played

Ross Twp, PA - On an evening that had featured a persistent drizzle in the hours preceeding game time, the Pittsburgh NABA All-Star Game commenced as rescheduled at 8:30PM.  However the game would be short lived as a power failure in the top of the 3rd would cause a 30 minute delay in the action, and the cancellation of the game.

The game had already thrice been rescheduled having been  rained out on three successive dates in July.  To those in attendance, this was a game that nature apparently just didn't want played.

The field was in playable condition after some solid work by the Pittsburgh NABA groundscrew, and rain subsided as Colin Peffly of the Bombers threw out the first pitch of the game.  Peffley would strike out the first batter, but then ran into some trouble.

Ben Gwin drew a walk with one out, and singles by Jason Goldie and Mark Lombardi would load the bases.  Peffley would then walk John Tremel, forcing in a run.  Mark Guthrie would follow with a ground ball to the right side.  A fielding error on the Allegheny squad would cost them two runs instead of one, as Peffley settled down and struck out five of the next six batters.

The Alleghenies would answer in the top of the first as Milton Joyner singled to start the inning, and would later score on a single to right field by Dave Alviso.

Jason Goldie led off the top of the 3rd with a single to right.  With Goldie on, and Tremel in the box, a bolt of lightning ended the evening as it cut the power to the lights.

With a 30 minute delay, the game was cancelled and many players went home.  A few players hung around to take part in an impromptu Home Run Derby Session when the lights returned to full strength.

Final score: 3-1 Monongahela in top of 3rd
