The 2009 Rookie League will kick off on Memorial Day Weekend, and will feature four teams competing in weekly Saturday morning doubleheaders. They will play 12-16 games at a cost of approximately $160 per player.
Featuring the same rules as the 18A Wood Bat League, the Rookie League differs in that it boats a more recreational brand of baseball, very similar in style to Fall Ball. Featuring players who have played some high school baseball, to players who haven't been on the field in a while, and even some players who have never played; the Rookie League is for people for just want to enjoy America's pastime during the summer.
Many players who were rookies in 2008 are making significant contributions to the 2009 Summer Leagues. 2008 Rookies Matt Crouch, Tony Casale, and Jaron Minford have all been solid contributors to the Gray Bats, Ducks, and Bulldogs at the start of this season, and all three were NABA "rookies" last year. "My home run swing isn't quite there yet, but cars in foul territory should beware," Jaron Minford explained when asked of his transition since his rookie campaign last year. Crouch, Casale, and Minford have all delivered crucial RBIs in their respective teams' early season wins.
The Registration Deadline for the Rookie League has been extended through May 17th.
