Piranha Notch Another Shutout
The Central Penn Piranha and their tenacious defense displayed another strong performance Saturday against their cross-town rival, the South Central Yard Dawgs. The story of the day for the Piranha was the amazing amount of pressure that the defensive line put on the Yard Dawgs quarterback John Bailes. Brian Smith led the way with 3 sacks, and Brent Fisher added 2 of his own. Brian Sanks also added a safety and a sack.
The Piranha secondary chipped in with 3 interceptions, and only allowed 2 completions during the entire game. Overall, the Piranha defense only gave up 45 yards of total offense.
However, the Yard Dawgs did win in one category, penalty yards. It was a slim margin, but the Dawgs notched 114 yards on flags while the Piranha were right behind them with 100 penalty yards of their own. There were a total of 25 accepted penalties enforced.
Starting quarterback, Mark Jarmon, led the Piranha offense to perhaps its best outing of the season. 312 yards of offense were generated (178 passing, 134 rushing). The Central Penn offense finally showed signs of domination, pitting their 17 first downs to a meager 2 by South Central. This is the first game that the defense didnt score a touchdown for the Piranha, allowing the offense to showcase their talented players.
Rookie sensation Ed Giddings opened the game's scoring with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Mark Jarmon. Later in the first quarter, running back Emne'ko Sweeney scored the first of two 1-yard scores during the game.
Roosevelt Turner added another 1-yard score in the fourth quarter. The game's scoring was capped late in the game when Jeremy Ricker hooked-up with tight end Randy Hanson on a 5-yard touchdown pass. It was Hanson's first career touchdown with the Piranha.
Current NFL wide receiver, Marques Colston (New Orleans Saints), was in attendance to watch the Yard Dawgs host the Piranha. Colston is a Harrisburg native, and he played football at Susquehanna Township High School (home field of the Yard Dawgs) before playing collegiately at Hofstra University.
Part 1 of the battle for the City Championship went to the Piranha. Part 2 will take place on September 20th at the home field of the Piranha (East Pennsboro High School).
Next up for the Central Penn Piranha (3-0) is the 10th edition of the "Back Yard Brawl" against the Chambersburg Cardinals (1-2). This highly-anticipated game will be played at Chambersburg High School, with a kickoff time of 7:00 PM.
Game Notes:
* The Piranha have recorded 23 sacks in the past two games played @ the South Central Yard Dawgs.
* This was the first game this season that CB Hassan Brockman did not score a touchdown (2 INT, 1 PR).
