Piranha Score in All Phases of Game
The Central Penn Piranha had a very strong showing to start out their 2009 season, defeating the Berks County Wild 47-0 in the inaugural Minor League Football Classic in Harrisburg, PA.
It was the Berks County Wild’s first game as members of the Pennsylvania Division of the NAFL. On the Wild’s first possession of the game, they were forced to punt. Hassan Brockman returned the punt 45 yards for a touchdown. Just like that, it was 7-0 in favor of the Piranha.
Later in the first quarter, Mark Jarmon connected with rookie Darren Echols on a 25-yard touchdown pass. In the second quarter, cornerback Mike Baldwin returned an interception 44 yards for another score.
Running back Ali Johnson (8-58 yards) would add a 13-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. In the final quarter, Piranha rookie quarterback Jeremy Ricker (University of Maryland) tossed a couple of touchdown passes (Kay Jay Miller - 20 yards, Terrill Barnes - 42 yards). Ricker almost notched a perfect passer rating of 158.3, by recording a staggering 156.3 mark. He finished 3-4, with 62 yards, and 2 touchdown passes.
Overall, the Piranha dominated from both sides of the ball, in addition to their special teams. Game MVP Darren Echols finished with 121 total yards (96 punt return). Defensive MVP Mike Baldwin recorded a fumble recovery, and an interception return for a touchdown. Defensive end Brent Fisher (3 tackles, 2 sacks) and linebacker DJ Patterson (4 tackles, fumble recovery) were other notable defensive leaders.
Kicker Andar Rehm was perfect on the day, going 2-2 for on field goal attempts (48, 37), and 5-5 on extra point attempts.
The event generated $500 for the Hummelstown Campus of the Allegheny Valley School, which provides programs for adults with developmental disabilities.
Next week, the Piranha will take on the Lancaster Lightning at 7:00 PM on Saturday July 18th. It will be the home-opener for the Piranha, and will take place at East Pennsboro High School in Enola, PA.
Game Notes:
* Hassan Brockman 7th punt return for TD - #1 all-time in Piranha history (Steve Johnson)
* Andar Rehm 69th game played - Most games played by a kicker in Piranha history (Mike Berry)
* 48-yard field goal - Career-long for Andar Rehm
