Football - Merritt Heaton
Merritt Heaton - 2008

Like father, like son.  Former offensive lineman Shannon Heaton won a championship with the Central Penn Piranha.  Last month in Baltimore, his son experienced the same feeling.

Merritt Heaton is an offensive lineman (left tackle) and defensive lineman (right tackle) for the Gray Charles Comanches (ages 6-8).  On Saturday December 20, 2008, the Comanches completed their perfect season (14-0) by defeating the Bowie Bulldogs 19-8, to claim the Maryland Youth Football State Championship.  The game was played at M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens.  The Comanches came into the game as the #1 ranked team in the state in their age group.

The 2008 edition of the Gray Charles Comanches are the only team in the organization’s history to advance that deep into the playoffs.  During the team banquet, all of the players received a standing ovation from all of their friends and family members when they received their awards.

“I am so proud of my son.  He had a great season, and he’s a heck of a football player,” states the proud father.  Shannon Heaton coached the offensive line & defensive line for the Comanches.  Merritt also had one carry in the championship game (picture shown) for 7 yards.

It was only a few years ago that a much younger Merritt Heaton was seen attending Piranha practices and games.  Merritt would come to practice decked out in his full Redskins’ uniform, complete with helmet.  When he wasn’t busy watching dad practice, he was playing football on the side.  Looks like all those Piranha practices paid off for the Heaton family.
