Classes begin promptly and no one is admitted after 15 minutes past starting time.
Pre-registration is required for all classes.
All People's Life Center is on Sligh Avenue just east of 56th St. and next to King High School.
Coaching Selection and Certification
Manager and Coach Selection
All managers and coaches will be selected by the league President, Teddy Deese. Manager selection is based on not only baseball or softball skills, but also the ability to manage all facets of team responsibilities and to support all PLL activities. Managers and coaches must have a Hillsborough County identification (ID) badge that is to be worn at all times on the field. See the section below on certification requirements.
Applications can be submitted during any onsite registration.
In addition to teaching baseball or softball skills, managers/coaches are required to assist in the maturation of our young players and emphasize good sportsmanship and team work. In that regard, coaches are required to lead by example by treating players, other coaches and umpires respectfully. Managers/coaches are also required to participate in the development and improvement of the league. Their participation may include working on the facilities, serving on committees, attracting sponsors and promoting fundraising opportunities.
Managers and coaches must be cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certified. The Safety Director will provide information when those classes are conducted.
Coaching Certification
All managers and coaches must have a Hillsborough County identification (ID) badge. In fact, all personnel on the field, including volunteer umpires and personnel working in the dugout must possess and display the ID badge. The badge is obtained by attending a coaching certification class and submitting to a background check. The coaching certification and background check are good for two years and must be renewed after that point.
There are two methods for satisfying the coaching certification requirement:
Method 1. A Hillsborough County Certification Class, http://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/parks/athletics/coachingclasses.cfm. These classes are offered free and are normally presented several times a month. ”Building a Winning Season” is for those coaches that have not previously attended a class. “Coaching, The Fun Continues” is for those coaches that are renewing. In order to pre-register for these classes a Hillsborough County Volunteer Application is submitted for a background check. The application should be submitted several weeks prior to a class date to allow ample time for the background check results.
Method 2. An online course that is acceptable to the county can be taken online at the National Youth Sports Coaches Association, http://www.nays.org/nyscaonline/. These courses are sport specific and there are courses for baseball and softball. This course has a current fee of $25 but is only good for the first year. Successful completion in this course yields an equivalent of the coaching card. The recipient then must follow the steps below to acquire the county ID badge.

Little League is no longer allowing teenagers under 18 to umpire games without an adult present. They feel the players aren't getting a fair deal. It is one thing for Little League to say that for liability or other reasons, they are requiring an adult to be on the field umpiring. I may not agree, but it is their organization, and they get to make the rules. If I don’t like it, I can protest (which I have) and choose to either do something else with my time should my protest be to no avail (as I suspect it will) or follow their rules and make the best of it. That’s the way it works in the world – the guys who run the company get to make the rules. But, for Little League to issue the press release below, saying that allowing a teenager to umpire without an adult on the field is “grossly unfair to the child”, amongst other things, is just insulting to those of us who have done so in good faith and with good results – AND WITH NO ONE FROM LITTLE LEAGUE SAYING IT WAS NOT PERMITTED – for years. I have seen teenagers umping games alone in Little League for decades. If Little League now wants to cover themselves and not allow Junior umps to work alone, fine, but don’t cast it as being a matter of fairness to “children”. It would also be nice to have someone representing Little League who doesn’t choose to demean teenagers by calling them “children”. Is that what Little League calls Junior and Big League players? All I know is I took great pleasure training teenagers and young adults to volunteer as umpires. It is a shame Little League has gone in this direction.
