CASA Meeting Minutes (minutes are approved at the following months meeting)
CASA Board Meeting Minutes – November 3, 2009 Meeting called to order at 8:09. Members present: Gon Sanchez, Tiffany Sanchez, Jodi Widvey, Val Keller, Bill Gore, Don Gordon, Tammy Cruse, Terry Erickson, Brett Hanson, Jackie Rounds, and Tom Rounds. Minutes from October 15 approved by Terry Erickson, 2nd by Gon Sanchez. Treasurer’s Report – Twila just had her baby Monday (Congrats!!), so Tom Rounds will send out Treasurer’s Report by email to members.
Old Business AGM – State AGM in Deadwood, SD, November 14 & 15. All interested are encouraged to attend. There is a Quarterly Board Meeting from 9-11:30 am, and AGM Social & Banquet Saturday night for $30. Voting for open positions will be on Sunday from 9:30-11:30 am. Various state-wide positions are up for nominations and elections. Help keep Pierre representatives on the board. Indoor – Practice locations/Keys/Supervision: Practice locations and times have been pretty much established for all known teams, but some additional times and locations would be beneficial. Tom will check PILC gym, Ft. Pierre, and DCI Building for availability. Reminder to all coaches/teams: Gyms reserved through CASA and for indoor can ONLY be used with ADULT supervision (over 18). If anything is broken while a CASA team is in a gym, coaches, please let Tom Rounds know ASAP so we can work to remedy the situation. If coaches feel Futsol balls are needed to avoid damage, let Tom know. Tom has keys for coaches for the City Auditorium; Middle School keys can be checked out through Mr. Weibe. Teams/Games/Tournaments:All teams need to notify Vickie Samuelson of team rosters by Friday. All rosters need to be signed off through CASA to insure all players have paid CASA fees. Coaches need to also let Vickie know the practice times and locations for insurance purposes. Discussion was held on the importance of developing policy related to team formation for the U14 and older teams. As more kids show interest in playing indoor, there needs to be a plan in place so kids don’t slip through the cracks that are interested in playing. Pierre Tournament is scheduled for February 26-28. Out of town teams are showing interest in attending; there will be no ODP teams. Last year 36-40 teams participated. This is the only indoor tournamet scheduled that weekend, so we are hoping for a good turnout. High School Committee:Six people have agreed to serve on the committee and there are two more yet to contact. The meeting will occur next week. The Code of Conduct will be established/reviewed and a review of the past year will be conducted. Positions will be advertised for the 2010-2011 year. Jeff Pierce and Doug Peterson are not going to be coaching next year. Chris Derry has indicated repeatedly to Tom Rounds that he is not going to coach, and Sidney Zanin has not indicated one way or another at this point. Positions are advertised every year as the contracts are on a year to year basis, but weight is given to those who have already coached with CASA. Goals/Nets:U10 nets need to be fixed at PILC. We need more nets for indoor. Portable, 6X6X12 aluminum goals plus nets are $700 a pair through Fold and Goal. Footsol has 7X9X10 goals and nets available for $600 a pair. After discussion, it was agreed to order one set of goals/nets from Fold & Goal. If coaches like these goals, another set will be ordered. Oahe FC is talking about getting a storage facility (not Tammy’s garage!) and these new goals could possibly be stored there when not in use. Apparently the goals and nets from the State Challenge Cup this past summer are still up at Hilger’s Gulch. The nets need to be taken down. Tom will get in touch with someone to take care of this, or Tammy & Brad Cruse will at least get the nets down this weekend. Club They will let us know final indoor schedule once confirmed. D license – last weekend of November and 1st weekend of December. E license – in March. Next meeting is November 17 at 5:30. New Business Referees – Ref course for all new refs will be in January. Brad Cruse has requested that all Oahe FC coaches also be certified refs for both a better understanding of the game and the opportunity to help CASA. Discussion on JV and V kids helping to ref U8 games. Benefit would be kids would have a respect for the game and refs, as well as have a better understanding of the game of soccer. Indoor Team Formation – Discussion on allowing U14 and up kids creating own teams. Benefits are kids have “fun” without having to be “coached” and “structured”. Concerns: kids may not get asked or picked to be on a team and in the end, not get to play; the camaraderie of playing as a team is lost when kids are feeling left out; liability; too many kids “play-up” and they risk injury and “shorting” proper age group team from having a full roster; the purpose of indoor is to continue with soccer skills and game improvement – if kids are out just to play, you lose the continuity of skill improvement. Board feels a committee should be formed to put together rules for the indoor season to be implemented by next year. Coaches MUST contact Vickie Samuelson by Friday with rosters, practice schedules and locations to insure all are registered. This will also allow us to make sure all kids interested in playing are on age-appropriate teams. In the past kids were allowed to “play up” when the older kids were short players; it allowed them to field teams. If too much “play up” is happening and other teams can’t field a team, this will have to be addressed. CASA rules require kids be approved to “play up”, and this will need to occur for indoor if it becomes an issue. Next meeting date – December 2, 2009 at 8:00; SDEA Building. Meeting adjourned at 9:20 pm. Respectfully Submitted, Tiffany Sanchez, Secretary
Meeting called to order at 7:02 pm. Tom Rounds, Doug Peterson, Brad Cruse, Tammy Cruse, Val Keller, Bill Gore, Brooke Dozark, Kathy Leonard, Kim Leiferman, Vickie Samuelson, Gon Sanchez, Tiffany Sanchez, Twila Hight present. August Minutes –approved by Tiffany Sanchez; seconded Kim Leiferman. Treasurer’s report – Presented by Twila Hight, reviewed by members, approved by Kim Leiferman; seconded Tiffany Sanchez. Old Business
AGM – *CASA AGM meeting in August *State AGM in Deadwood—on website November 13, 14. Fall Season –*Uniforms – Coordinator, Brooke Dozark indicated only half of uniforms are turned in. *Concession Stand -- Coordinator, Kathy Leonard, is looking at selling left-over food/candy items to Hockey/Wrestling Associations that can’t carry over to spring season. Kathy indicated we are short toilet paper in the restrooms. Tom Rounds stated the City should provide toilet paper and we need to have some back up stock from them so we don’t run short again. *Concession Stand Schedule -- Concern with the lack of communication from the coordinators to coaches to parents regarding working required shifts at concession stand. U10 and U12 had a lot of no shows. Most coordinators never heard back from the coaches as to who was supposed to be working their shifts. Better communication at the initial Coaches Meeting needs to be stressed so we don’t have no-shows. Possibly implement a “No parent represented in concession, NO GAME” policy. Also we need to remind parents that no kids are allowed in the concession stand as visitors or workers.
High School – *Kudos to coaches, players, parents for a good season and state tournament. *Many appreciated KCCR’s broadcast and the web cast from the state tournament. *Best of luck to the graduating seniors. Referees –We NEED MORE refs! *Question regarding payment for friendly refs: Pierre had been burned in the past where we offered friendly games at no charge to traveling team—we paid for refs; but then we would go out of town and get charged! Agreement with Huron to a wash—cover your home game expenses. Regarding recent friendly games, do we pay refs according to age group game or JV rates? Current payment for U12-$15; U14--$17; JV Center --$40, AR --$25. Need to pay for 5 centers and 10 AR. Discussion about ongoing need for refs in Pierre, it would be in our best interest to pay well for these friendly games, so the next time we host, refs would be and eager knowing they are well compensated for their time. Motion made to pay refs JV rates by Kim Leiferman, seconded by Gon Sanchez. Fields –*Tom Rounds spoke with Tom Farnsworth and Todd Kelley with the city of Pierre regarding the problems around some of the water lines at PILC fields. They indicated we need a sod cutter to cut where the water lines are, pack them with dirt, and re-sod. Hope to get this done this fall or spring. *Nets – Indoor soccer is short nets and goals for this season. U10 outdoor nets are currently used for indoor goals in the winter. $4000 is in the budget for repairs. New nets are $400 per set at the low end, and we need 5 sets of nets. Goals are $700-800 for the aluminum portable ones. We need 1-2 sets. We need to check the state rates at Quick Goal. Also question on where to store the indoor goals. We have 5 sets now that are not moveable. Tom R. will check rates and send an email out for discussion. Club – Oahe FC *Look for email regarding time of next meeting scheduled Monday, October 26. *Currently verifying locations for indoor tournament in Pierre February 26-28. There is a swim meet in town that weekend, but currently we are okay for hotels and gyms/locations. There is no school February 26-27 in Pierre due to conferences, but state wrestling is in Rapid City, so some concern with player availability. It is always hard to pick a date that will work for everyone. New Business *Congrats Lindsey Peterson – Signed with DWU.
*D Coaching Course – with Brian Pitts & Chris Derry, scheduled in Pierre for November 20-22 and December 4-6 (same as ODP tryouts). *E Coaching Course – most likely in March.
*State is looking for nominations for state level positions.
*There was a good coaches meeting at the state tournament. They are looking at some schedule changes recommended to AGM for 2010: power point which would move start date up one week, play 10 season games, 2 rounds of semis over weekends, and then finals weekend for the top 4 teams; no conferencing.
*State Tournaments will be in Mitchell the next 2 years thanks to a new 10 fieldcomplex built with financial support from Earl Nordby.
*Possibility of sanctioning soccer will be voted on in March. Sioux Falls Schools have stated they can’t afford soccer as a sanctioned sport – 3 high schools will $150,000 per year. *Indoor Schedule – be sure Tom reserves gyms through middle of March. There are some dates that the city has blocked out due to fundraisers or other activities; teams need to be aware and flexible. Girls start middle of November. Sidney Zanin will start after school practices at City Auditorium in 1-2 weeks. Coaches can look at practicing at other area gyms; Econo Foods building could be looked at as a possibility (?), *Kim Leiferman conducted an anonymous U6 coach’s survey. She was pleased with the open and honest feedback. Coaches opted for no concessions on Saturday. Most indicated an E Coaching Course is not an option at this point, as they can’t commit to a weekend. Some may be open to an online course with only 5 hours of class time that may be available in the future. Coaches still feel more guidance is needed, and Kim recommends we have a packet for each coaches. All coaches appreciated having an assistant coach to help when there were scheduling conflicts. CASA Soccer online from Pennsylvania has some excellent packets for coaches; as does the Aimes, Iowa, program.
*U8 Coordinators did an excellent job. Communication is still an issue – occurs from coordinators to coaches, but not very good from coaches to parents and then back to coaches and coordinators. Concern with coaches trying to pick players to stack teams. *U10/U12 had to many blow out games. Coaches need to reposition players to ork skills rather than run up scores. CASA is about learning; OAHE FC is about competition. Parents and coaches should be aware and mindful of this as they play. *Gon Sanchez suggested high school players be required or encouraged to olunteer to ref U8 level games to help with the ref shortage. With 50+ kids in the high school program, if each player could give back to the program that helped them, it could be a win-win-win situation. Players would have a little more understanding and respect of the requirements of a ref and have some volunteer type activity for their college applications, the CASA players role-models in the high school players/refs and show some interest in attending high school level games, and CASA would have an easier time scheduling qualified refs for higher level games only. In addition, this may encourage the high school players to continue their ref training. Refs must be certified for U10 levels and up. The concern is the time requirement for the high school kids (2-3 games per season), missed practices for HS teams that practice after 5:30, and conflicts with other extra-curricular and work activities. *Vickie Samuelson indicated indoor registration is underway. It is a manual registration that new players can access on the CASA website. If they didn’t play in the fall they need to pay the registration fee. A mass email will be sent to contact the appropriate coaches if player is interested in playing. The coaches will send the player list to Vickie for verification of paid registration fees. October 24 is the deadline. Next meeting date – Tuesday, November 3, 2009; 8:00 pm 8:14 Meeting adjourned. Respectfully Submitted, Tiffany Sanchez, Secretary
