MISSION STATEMENT
1. Develop a baseball team that consistently competes for the Palomar League and San Diego Section CIF Titles through teamwork, top-level coaching and rigorous practice. 2. Values a. Trust and loyalty between the coaching staff and the players b. Commitment to academics, teamwork, sportsmanship, and school spirit c. Skill improvement through a commitment to fundamentals d. High self-esteem for each player e. A supervised, wholesome, and competitive environment. GENERAL GUIDELINES
You can expect loyalty and commitment from the coaching staff. The coaching staff must insist upon loyalty and commitment in return. In order to attain real success, we must trust each other. The coaching staff must make certain decisions in the best interest of the team. Team members must honor and trust these decisions. We trust that you will abide by the following rules: a. Attitude - No individual (player or coach) is more important than the team or the program. b. Attendance - Mandatory for all practices and games. Participating in off-season leagues will enhance your chances of making the team by increasing your skill level. c. Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drugs - We will strictly follow the Poway High School Policy (No dipping tobacco). COMMUNICATION
Line between players and coaches is always open. Players should feel free to talk to any coach, at any time, for any reason. Parents should contact coaches at SCHOOL, NOT before or after games. If there is an emergency, Coach Parry can be contacted at home. Players need to concentrate on the game. Parents will not make contact with players during the game. PARENTS' ROLE (at games): a. Sit in the bleachers, not along the foul lines (for safety). DO NOT enter or approach the bullpen and/or dugout areas during the game. b. Consider sitting together to show team support. c. Always be positive towards individuals and team(s). d. Cheer for the team. e. Do not yell at or argue with umpires (the coaches' role). f. Do not talk to or coach your son during games. g. Stay out of the dugout during and after games. h. The press box is for announcers, scorekeepers, statisticians, scouts, visiting coaches, and concession workers. PRACTICES
If you are going to miss a practice, you must have prior arrangement with the coaches. Always be on time and ready to go. Always wear the proper uniform. Conduct yourself at practice as you would in a game. Always work hard (HUSTLE). This is the time you and the team improves. EVERYONE is responsible for setting up stations during practice, and breaking down stations after practice. EVERYONE is responsible for prepping the field after practices and games. (Take pride in your field.) GAMES General: You cannot miss a game without prior arrangement with coaches. Be on time! Stretching is an important part of preparation for the game. It should always be taken seriously. This is where focus begins. Running Program - focus on good technique - do not take for granted. Throwing (long toss, etc.) is very important for keeping your arm healthy and improving arm strength. Infield/Outfield - complete focus. This is where the game begins. Communicating positively with your teammates. Concentrate on catching and throwing. (Scouts get a lot of information by watching infield/outfield alone. The team will select game day dress for school. Game: Players should always be positive and supportive with each other. Talk on the bench is game-related (keep starters fired up). Players: a. It is your responsibility to know the signs. If you miss a sign, you are letting the entire team down. b. Always act as a professional. c. Always hustle and sprint on and off the field. d. Always sprint back to your position. e. Never walk on the field. f. Do not argue with umpires. Players on the bench: a. Pitchers and catchers should become a team. b. Players should always be ready to go into the game at any time (keep arm and bat loose). c. Pitchers should watch the opposing batters looking for strengths and weaknesses. Talk with the starting pitcher while on the bench. Find out how he is pitching to certain hitters. d. Hitters should study every pitch thrown by the opposing pitchers. You should know what to expect if you are called on to pinch-hit. Post Game: a. Field clean up - everyone has a responsibility to take care of the field. It is not a race to the finish. Take your time and do a good job. b. Running - take pride in running after the game. c. You may be asked to work on a drill after the game. You should remain as focused as at normal practice. TRYOUTS
You must have a physical before you can tryout. You must attend all meetings before tryouts begin. You must have the necessary uniform and equipment (hat, pants, shirt, glove, cleats, catchers' gear, etc.). Be ready to give your best. You should be running, throwing, hitting prior to the first day of tryouts. If you get a sore arm or legs after the first day, it may affect the rest of your tryout. Always hustle - never walk on the field. IN SEASON CONDITIONING PITCHERS: a. will have a weekly routine planned out (bull pens, arm strengthening drills, long toss, running, etc.). It is your responsibility to complete your assignment each day. b. You will shag balls during batting practice. c. Bull pens should be taken seriously. d. This is your chance to work on mechanics, arm strength, and location. CATCHERS: a. Long toss. b. Bull pens - work on your catching skills. c. Get to know your pitchers: 1. Their pitches; 2. When they need you to go out to the mound; 3. Become a team. INFIELDERS: a. Think about possible situations before they happen. b. Know where to be in every possible situation. c. Long catch - strengthen arm. d. Always communicate (with outfielders, pitcher, each other). e. Pop fly priorities. OUTFIELDERS: a. Long toss. b. Be ready to get a good jump on EVERY pitch. c. Always run back to your position. d. Back up - know where to be. e. Communicate with each other and infielders. PRE-GAME PREPARATION: a. Infielders discuss field conditions before the game. b. Sun - do you need sunglasses? c. Fence 1. Which way will the ball carom off? 2. Will the ball bounce far off the wall? d. Grass 1. Is it slow or fast? 2. Are there puddles? e. Wind 1. Which way is it blowing? 2. Will it carry? 3. Are there dirt spots? f. Work hard in batting practice. This is where you learn to get good jumps on the ball and learn to position yourself, e.g. Is the hitter early or late? OFF SEASON CONDITIONING
Play in a league - nothing takes the place of live at-bats and actual game time. Throw at least two times a week to keep your arm in shape. Use surgical tubing. You can never get enough batting practice - practice swings, wiffle ball, batting tee, and pitching machine. Running increases endurance, leg strength, and speed. SIXTH PERIOD BASEBALL Freshmen must take Freshmen P.E. A freshman on the varsity roster can take Advanced Baseball during the Spring semester. Anyone planning on playing J.V. or Varsity baseball should be enrolled in the Advanced Baseball class. This requires the permission and signature of the Head Varsity Coach. Be Ready to Work Hard in the Class: a. Through weight training and running programs, the class is designed to increase your size, strength, and speed. b. This is where our pursuit for the C.I.F. crown begins. c. The team is depending on you to be at your best. AT SCHOOL You are a representative of the Poway High Baseball Team and should be a positive role model at school. In class: a. Be on time to every class. b. Go to class. c. Any result of discipline at school or in the classroom will result in discipline on the field. d. Maintain a grade point average (2.0 minimum) each grading period that keeps you C.I.F. eligible.
