Coach Parry 2009-1

Bob Parry - Head Coach


Coach Parry began his baseball career at Mt. Carmel, where he played on the 1982 C.I.F. Championship Team under Sam Blalock. After red-shirting with a broken finger in 1983, he played for Bob Vetter at Palomar College in 1984 and 1985. He was named to the "All Conference Team" both years, and the "All Regional Team" in 1985. He set numerous offensive records while at Palomar. He went on to SDSU on a scholarship. In 1986 Coach Parry was named to the "All WAC Conference Team" and was the San Diego Hall of Champions' Player of the Month in May. The 1986 SDSU team earned a berth to the regional championships, where they lost to the college world series champions, University of Arizona. In 1987 Coach Parry was SDSU's "Most Valuable Player". He was also named to the "All WAC Conference Team", "All Regional Team", and was voted as an UPI "All American". He set, and holds, the record for the highest batting record (.418) at SDSU. Coach Parry signed with the Oakland A's in 1987 and played five years in the minor leagues. He began coaching in 1992 as the freshman coach at Rancho Bernardo and was the varsity hitting coach there in 1993 and 1994. He then decided to go to a real school and took the head coaching job here at PHS in 1995.

Deron Johnson - Var Hitting Coach


Coach Deron graduated from Poway High School in 1982 where he was All Palomar League his senior year. He then attended Grossmont College and Palomar. He was All Pacific Coast Conference both years. Deron was drafted in 1983 by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth round of the Winter Draft, but chose to continue his education. He then attended SDSU, playing third, first, and outfield. Deron was All WAC and All West Coast in 1986. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 29th round in 1986. In his first Minor League season Deron was rated as one of the top ten hitters coming from that Draft Group.

Tom Brunansky -Var Assistant Coach


Coach Bruno was drafted out of high school in 1978 by the California Angels in the 1st round (14th player taken). He turned down a scholarship to Stanford to play football/baseball, and signed. After three years in the minor leagues, Tom broke into the Major Leagues with the Angels in 1981. He was traded to the Minnesota Twins in 1982 and played with the Twins for 6 years. During that time Tom was selected to the All Rookie team in 1982, an All-Star in 1985, and a World Series Champion in 1987. He was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1988 and played there for 2 1/2 years until being traded to the Boston Red Sox. Tom played in Boston for 4 years with a quick stop in Milwaukee for the 1993 season. He returned to Boston in 1994 and retired after that season.



Mike Acuna - JV Head Coach


Coach Acuna graduated from Poway High School in 2000, where he was All Palomar League both seasons on Varsity. He went on to Southwestern College where he was named "Freshman of the Year" for his school and was All Pacific Coast Conference both years. Coach Acuna graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2004 with a B.A. in Sociology. He played two seasons in both the infield and outfield. The 2004 team broke the school and conference record for most wins in a season and earned a berth to the NAIA World Series, finishing third. Coach Acuna led the team in hitting his senior year. He holds two offensive records at PLNU - runs in a season (58) and singles in a season (71). Mike is also in the top ten in school history in a few other offensive categories, including hits in a season and career batting average.

David Dinerman - Frosh Head Coach


Coach Dinerman comes to Poway High School after a three year stint at Canyon Crest Academy, where he helped establish that school's baseball program. He coached all aspects at the JV and Varsity level, with an emphasis on outfield, base running and hitting. After completing his commitment to CCA, he helped develop the Encinitas Gamers 16-U team, an elite, Southern California Summer travel program, which feeds the long standing and successful 18U Encinitas Gamers team. In its first season, the '16Us' won 2 of 3 USABF Elite tournaments. He's been involved at all levels of youth baseball in the Del Mar/Carmel Valley area for a number of years as a coach and served as President of the Del Mar Little League. He holds a Masters Degree in Sports Management from Ohio University, spent three years with the Baltimore Orioles front office and served in the athletic departments at the United States Military Academy (West Point) and Boston University. A converted outfielder (CF to 3B), his playing career includes BMC Durfee High School, American Legion and American University (Washington DC). Coach Dinerman and his wife (Linda) are Massachussets natives, who moved to San Diego in 1992. They have two children, Matthew (16) and Diana (32).
