POWAY TITAN BASEBALL 2004
EXPECTATIONS AND RULES
EXPECTATIONS
When you choose to play baseball in the Poway Baseball Program you are making a very serious commitment. Not everyone has a chance to play baseball at the level at which we play. We are going to ask more from you than you have probably ever been asked, so you must decide whether you are willing to make that commitment. This commitment will require that you go against what may currently be the popular way of doing things that many of your friends do. It not only involves a certain way of playing baseball, but also a certain way that you will look, act, and behave as a representative of our school and our baseball program. Some of you may not be up to this commitment, although I hope that all of you are. This commitment is designed to not only make us the most successful baseball team that we can possibly be, but also to make you the most successful person that you can be as well.
The rewards for this will come in many ways, at different times, for each of you. Some of you will receive individual recognition while others may not get the recognition that you deserve. However, the most important reward that you will receive is that you will be a part of a team, a second family, that you will have a special bond with for the rest of your life. You will not have these opportunities very often in life.
You must be a team player first. The success of our team and you will be directly related to how committed you are to the team first of all. We want you to succeed individually as well, but you must understand that will come along with the success that we experience as a team. We will only be as strong as our weakest link. Everyone must live up to the expectations of the program. In fact, your expectations of yourselves are even more important. We will win as a team and lose as a team. No one person is more important than the team or the program. No one person will win a game by himself or lose a game by himself. If you cannot buy into this philosophy you should choose to do something else.
We are looking for players who are tough, smart, unselfish, and fundamentally sound. We must work on this every day to develop this philosophy. We are impressed with hard workers, not with flashiness or individualism. This philosophy will allow us to have a chance to win every time we step on the field, no matter who our opponent is. It will also allow us to have competitive teams year in and year out, no matter what out talent level is. We will get to this level. How quickly and whether youre with us is up to you.
Those who stay and follow the expectations and rules will be champions!
The Coaching Staff
GENERAL TEAM RULES
PHILOSOPHY
Every player in this program represents the entire program, not only yourselves, your coaches, your teammates, but also every player who has played or who will ever play in this program. People watch athletes. People will expect the best of you. In fact, some people will look for fault or hope that you mess up so they dont look bad themselves. You are role models for the young kids that will someday play Poway High Baseball. Team rules are made with the intent in mind that we want to be a class act. We want to win as much as the next person but we will not win at the expense of breaking the things we stand for.
RULES
1. All players are required to participate in all meetings, practices and games unless excused by the coach.
2. All players must follow the general Poway High School athletic policies regarding physical exams, insurance, equipment, team lockers, athletic events and specific training rules for their sport.
3. Our trainer, student trainers, and assistant coaches are an important part of our program. They are there to help us reach our goals. They should be treated with dignity and respect at all times.
4. You are responsible for the care and return of specific uniforms issued to you.
5. The coaching staff at all three levels have an open door policy. If you are having problems, (teammates, academics, policy, playing time, etc.) talk to one of us. We will not discuss any problems with your parents, until you have talked to one of the coaches first. If you are in the junior varsity or freshman program, and you are not satisfied with the discussion with your coach, then see Coach Parry.
6. When you are wearing the P.H.S. uniform, act like the high caliber, class athlete that you are.
7. If it is necessary to miss practice due to illness or other emergency, you are required to notify Mrs. Faraci (486-0489 or
858 395-7050 cell) as early as possible (before lunch) so that adjustments can be made for practice or line-ups.
8. Missing Practice (unexcused):
First time = sit out the next competition
Second time = sit out for a week
Third time = dismissal from the team
9. Late To Practice:
First time = warning
Second time = extra physical drills
Third time = sit out the next competition
Fourth time = suspension/possible dismissal from team
10. If you participate in any type of hazing of another person in the program you will be suspended indefinitely, pending review by coaching staff and administration, with dismissal, most likely, from the program.
PRACTICE RULES
PHILOSOPHY
We will practice the way we play. Practices will be designed to be more difficult than games. You must come to practice ready to work, to improve as a player as well as a team. As a player you must strive to focus for the entire three hours we will be at practice. Work on improving your weaknesses as well as your strengths. The atmosphere that we create at practice should be one of intensity and preparation. The effort and attitude that we exhibit on the practice field will carry over into the game. All practice rules will be made with this in mind.
RULES
1. Be on time! This means that your uniform is on, and you are ready to begin stretching at the given time.
2. Any physical therapy should be taken care of before practice. Get to the training room early or make arrangements with Susan.
3. Never walk on the baseball field.
4. Dress code:
-Required practice gear is glove, spikes and running shoes, PHS hat, gray pants, green shirt, and jacket required for pitchers. Wearing the same uniform promotes team unity.
-You cannot practice in your game uniform.
-Hats must be worn with the bill facing forward.
-Shirts must be tucked in at all times
-Jewelry is not allowed. Please leave your necklaces, earrings, and watches in your locker before you come to practice. Get used to it now, jewelry is not allowed in games!
-Pants must be worn above your hips. (no sagging)
Failure to follow the dress code:
First time = warning/physical drills
Second time = sent home from practice or game
Third time = suspended for a week
Fourth time = dismissal from team
5. If you are injured during practice you need to let the coaches know immediately.
6. Only positive comments are accepted on the field. Negative comments towards your teammates will be handled the same way as dress code violations (rule#4)
7. At no time are you allowed to curse. Cursing will be dealt with the same way as dress code violations. (rule#4)
8. There is no throwing of equipment during practice or games. It does not matter if it is your own personal equipment. Throwing equipment will be dealt with the same way as the dress code. (rule#4)
9. You are expected to hustle at all times. If you do not hustle you will be sent home.
10. All players are responsible for field set-up and clean up. This includes the team room. Jobs will be assigned for the entire team. Failure to follow this rule will result in individual or team physical drills.
11. It is your job to be coachable. It is the coachs job to coach, so be receptive to correction. Coaches are only trying to help you become a better player, which in turn will make us a better team.
12. It is the responsibility of all players to shag fly balls during batting practice, when it is your turn to do so. Not shagging fly balls is an individual act that puts oneself above the team, and this will not be tolerated.
First time = warning
Second time = physical drills
Third time = sent home from practice
Habitual = possible suspension/dismissal from team
13. Be respectful to your coaches. Your coaches put a lot of time and effort into this job, to help you improve as an athlete and a person. Disrespect of a coach will be dealt with severely.
First offense = sent home/parent and athlete conference
Second offense = suspended indefinitely/possible dismissal
Third offense = dismissal from program
14. Be respectful to the younger players in the program. Their egos need to be built up, not broken down in order to excel in our program. These are the players who will represent Poway High School in the future.
Failure to follow this rule will be handled the same way as rule number 13.
GAME RULES
PHILOSOPHY
It is our goal as a team to pursue victory with honor. We will compete in every contest with our utmost ability, and hope we receive the same from our opponents. Win or lose, if we are able to walk off the field having given our all, and having gained the respect of our opponents, coaches, fans and umpires, then we can hold our heads high. We will do whatever it takes to win each game without breaking our team rules. If we are able to do this, then we have truly accomplished our goals.
Unfortunately, not everyone will have the opportunity to play every game. In fact there will be players that will play very little. That is the nature of the game. There is a limited amount of playing time. Playing time will go to the players whom the coach feels is the most deserving and who will give the team its best chance to win, while pursuing victory with honor. Playing time is earned during practice. If you are not satisfied with your playing time you must communicate with your coach for advice on how to improve the situation. Meanwhile you must continue to put forth a positive effort and attitude. If you fail to do this you will hurt the program, the team and yourself, and you will face disciplinary action.
RULES
1. You must be in class two thirds of the day to participate in games against an opponent.
2. When we are on the road, do not leave class before the specified time.
3. Check and double-check your bag before we leave to make sure your have everything you need. We will not take another players gear because youve forgotten your own.
4. The same dress code applies for practice and games, with the same consequences.
5. Always respect your opponent, whether they are a good team or not. We want them to play their best, because this will let us know where we stand as a team. Tough competition breeds tough competitors and great teams. The outcome of competition is determined by how you play, not how your opponent plays.
6. Never talk to an opposing player unless you have something positive to say.
7. Respect the opposing coaches as you would your own. Disrespecting other coaches will result in the same consequences as disrespecting your own.
8. Respect the opposing fans. They have the freedom of speech to say what they want. If their words affect you, then they have accomplished their goal, because mentally you have been taken out of the game.
9. Respect the umpires. They always do the best they can. They choose this profession because they love the game. Never argue with an umpire. That is your coachs job. If you have the chance, talk to them before the game or during the game in positive manner. One of the greatest compliments Ive received in my fifteen years of coaching came from an umpire. He was not congratulating me for making to the CIF finals, or saying how good my team was that year. He said he enjoyed umpiring our games because our players were so respectful.
10. No player is excused from the field until all clean up duties are finished.
11. All players will abide by district guidelines in regards to bus conduct. Players leaving with parents after the game must have the parent sign a wavier with Mrs. Grosley prior to the game, and then give it to the coach.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS
PHILOSOPHY
We consider parents to be an important part of the Poway High School Baseball Program. Parents have a direct/indirect influence on players, coaches and the program itself. This can be a positive or negative influence. Everyone involved in our program has a duty to ensure that their influence promotes important life skills and the development of good character.
EXPECTATIONS
1. Support the concept of being a student first. Consider that only two out of ten high school student/athletes continue in their sport after high school.
2. Remember, participation in sports is a privilege, not a right.
3. Parents/guardians should also represent the school, coaches, and teammates with honor, on and off the field.
4. Promote to your child the avoidance of illegal or unhealthy substances including alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and some over the counter nutritional substances that increase the amount of testosterone in the body.
5. Treat all people with respect at all times and require the same of your student-athletes.
6. Be loyal to the school and team. Put the interests of the team above your childs personal glory.
7. Parents should not enter the dugout or field areas at any time. This is the coachs time with the players.
8. Treat umpires with respect. Dont complain or argue about calls or decisions during or after an athletic event.
9. Avoid talking negative to your child, always find a reason to be positive.
10. If any problem arises, have your child talk with his coach. If the situation is not resolved, then you should talk to your sons coach. If the problem continues to exist, then talk to the head coach. At that point if you are not satisfied with the outcome, then talk with the athletic director.
11. If you or your child has a problem with playing time, have your child talk with the coach. The line of communication ends there.
12. Other than playing time, if there is a need to talk with a coach, please do not approach the coach after a game. Call Mrs. Faraci and she will have the coach call you back.
13. Finally, we should all promote the team concept, cheer for the name on the front of the uniform, not the back.
