  • 2011 Team Rules - 2011 Poway Cross Country Team Rules and Philosophy The Road to Success in Poway Cross Country 1. You are a member of an intra-scholastic competitive Cross Country team. You must be dedicated to Poway High School, to the Poway High School Athletic program, to your Cross Country coaching staff, and all your teammates. 2. Your greatest goal should be personal improvement and helping your teammates, both girls and boys, to their improvement. 3. Cooperation with everyone involved in the Poway High School Cross Country program is the only way we can reach our potential. 4. Team loyalty keeps the team running in the right direction toward success. Criticism of any teammate will stop us cold in our tracks and is never acceptable. 5. Team pride comes from watching each and every athlete improve as a competitive runner. 6. Our Team Captains are your communicators. Please discuss any plans or problems, involving your team, with them. Your Captains will be selected in the summer and added throughout the season. 7. Our team, boys and girls, work out together each and every day. Be there on time, ready to get better as a racer. 8. If we work together as a team, we improve both as teammates and individuals. 9. Dedication to do your best will come through hard work with everyone around you. 10. What we ask of you is what we ask of ourselves, to give to your team 100% effort in everything you do. When it’s a hard workout do it hard, if it’s a resting day, rest. We practice to be competitive. Each and every day is clearly designed to make you most competitive when we need you most competitive. We can only reach our best by working together. Individual Rules for Poway Cross Country 1. All athletes must know and obey each and every rule as stated in the Poway High School Athletic Handbook. Play special attention to Rules II and III. If you miss a practice, you must inform Coach Schaitel, if you are varsity or Coach Embrey or Coach Engle if you are a lower level boy and Coach Whitfield if you are a lower level girl. All coaches can be reached through school email or voice mail. 2. If you have to stay for tutorial or detention, come to practice as quickly as possible with a note in hand in accordance with Poway High School Athletic Department Rule IV. 3. Daily practice begins approximately 20 minutes after the last school bell. All athletes should report at the north end of the stadium. Be on time! All athletes will participate in the daily stretching routine. If needed, you will be sent to the Athletic Trainer for an injury evaluation. 4. The coaching staff will determine, from the Athletic Trainers evaluation, if you should continue your workout. In rare cases, you might be asked to go home and study and get well. Never leave any part of practice without the permission of your coach. 5. All athletes should report to all practices in workout gear. Never practice in meet uniforms (Rule IX). Do not wear uniforms to school except on meet days. Make sure you wear sweats when needed. 6. If you miss a practice session without informing your coach beforehand, you will be suspended from the next competition. The Three Strikes Rule (Rule IV) will be enforced. 7. Any unexcused absences from a practice session will prohibit competition, at your highest level, for that week. This counts against your varsity letter. 8. Any missed competition will result in being suspended from the team and loss of your team status. All excused competitions, MUST be done through Coach Schaitel. 9. Poway High School intra-scholastic athletics will take precedent over all outside activities (Poway Athletic Department Rule II and III). 10. All I ask of you is what I ask of everyone involved in Poway Cross Country, you must give 100% in everything you do. Days of hard workouts are to be done hard. Days of rest, you rest. Your seasonal workout routine is carefully designed to have you perform when you need to perform at your best. Never try additional running workouts during the Poway Cross Country season. Those who wish to participate in other sports during the Cross Country season, MUST have a signed dual sport contract on file.
