PHS 54, Capital 44

PARKERSBURG - Turnovers proved costly for visiting Capital on Thursday evening at Memorial Fieldhouse as Parkersburg's girls dealt the Cougars a 54-44 Mountain State Athletic Conference setback.

Dashia Foster's huge double-double that featured game-highs of 16 points and 18 rebounds went for naught as the Cougars made 28 turnovers. That included 15 in the first half and nine in the third quarter.

"We just wanted to wear them down," said Big Red head coach Kenny DeMoss, who watched Brooke Kurucz and Kam Snyder score 14 points apiece.

"I think our defensive pressure just forced them into bad decisions. Right now our goal, regardless of our record, is to get better."

The Cougars dominated the glass, 54-37, but the Big Reds had 13 fewer turnovers.

Katelyn Herrod's driving lay-in with nine seconds left in the opening quarter gave PHS a 14-13 cushion after one.

Capital's India Hairston, who had six points, three assists and two blocks, tied the game for the final time at 21 after sinking two foul shots with 4:24 left in the half. A Kailey Cox putback sparked a 10-0 run as PHS took control and didn't trail again. Following a Hannah Bailey steal which resulted in a layup for Hannah Carroll, Snyder and Nicole Dent ended the spurt with 3s thanks to assists from Holly Ackerman and Taylor Foster, respectively.

Parkersburg led 32-24 at intermission, but watched the 5-9 Cougars claw back into it thanks to inside presence of Foster, who made it a 35-32 affair with 4:05 to go in the third following a putback. However, Kurucz and Snyder combined for 10 points the rest of the quarter as Capital trailed 45-34.

The Big Reds weren't challenged in the final eight minutes and led 52-39 with 2:52 remaining following a Mackenzie Boone putback.

Capital starter Jayna Hurst was in foul trouble the entire game. Alex Gray had 11 points and a game-high six steals for the Cougars, who also got nine markers and seven caroms from Jahneece Clements.

PHS, which also received eight points form Haley Ackerman, will look to improve upon its 4-10 record when the red and white visits Woodrow Wilson this evening.
