HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High School's girls emulated the Highlanders' football team Tuesday night, playing rough, physical defense to defeat Parkersburg, 71-50, in the Highlanders' gym.

The game featured a combined 98 rebounds, 94 missed field goals, 37 turnovers, 36 fouls and a technical foul.

"It was rough," Huntington High coach Lonnie Lucas said. "Just rough. We expected it to be rough. It got started that way and it stayed that way all the way through." T

The Highlanders (3-0) adjusted to the physicality of the game better than did the Big Reds, early, jumping to a 21-8 lead in the first 5:08. Huntington High led 34-22 with 3:39 left in the second quarter before Parkersburg (1-3) began to charge back. Parkersburg pulled within 38-31 at halftime, then got as close as 41-37 on a pair of Brooke Kurucz free throws at 6:22 of the third quarter.

The Highlanders then picked up the pace again, outscoring Parkersburg 15-3 the rest of the quarter. The Highlanders made it a blowout in the fourth quarter, leading by as many as 24 on Dazha Congleton's basket with 1:57 to play.

"We needed a game like that," Lucas said. "We needed one of those to see how tough we are. We didn't lose our cool. That's important. It showed us what we need to work on. It's a learning process."

Huntington High will attempt to learn quickly, as it plays host to Ironton at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday. The Fighting Tigers will have to contend with a team that placed four players in double figures in scoring and three in rebounding against Parkersburg.

Jordan Dawson and Lacy Johnson scored 18 points apiece. Ten of Johnson's points were scored at the free throw line. Ericka Budd scored 15 points and Dazha Congleton added 12. Congleton snagged a game-high 13 rebounds, Dawson grabbed 11 and Budd pulled down 10. Congleton also blocked three shots.

"I thought all of them played well," Lucas said of the 12 players he used. "We had a couple of people in foul trouble and that prevented us from running like we wanted to, but we had to adjust."

Huntington High played the half court game well. The Highlanders pulled down a whopping 61 rebounds, while the Big Reds had 37. Huntington High also forced 20 turnovers, but committed 17.

The Highlanders outscored Parkersburg 22-8 at the free throw line and took 33 foul shots, compared to 19 for the Big Reds.

"We had some silly fouls," Lucas said. "We have some young kids who are learning. That happens."

Lucas said he expects a challenge from Ironton (4-4).

"Ironton's a solid team," Lucas said. "They have one really talented girl and a good team around her. They always bring a great crows and they're loud."
