PHS 68, Hurricane 62

PARKERSBURG - Sophomores Brooke Kurucz poured in 36 points and Kam Snyder bombed in four treys en route to 18 as Parkersburg High put up 57 points in the last three quarters to overcome visiting Hurricane 68-62 Thursday night at Memorial Fieldhouse.

Kurucz, after seven points in the first quarter, got rolling in the second stanza, tallying 14, and then after a basket in the third period, came back with a 13-point fourth quarter as the Big Reds topped the Redskins in the final 3:17 of the see-saw MSAC contest.

PHS, now 2-2 overall and 1-2 in MSAC outings, plays today at 1:45 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum versus Spring Valley. Hurricane now is also 2-2.The Redskins led throughout the first quarter, at one point ahead 12-4. But Kurucz's three-point play with 6.9 seconds left cut it to 15-11 at the quarter break.

The Big Reds, though, quickly fell behind 22-11 a little over two minutes into the second period before rallying back behind Kurucz, Snyder and Taylor Foster with 14 of the next 16 points to surge into a 25-24 lead at the 2:46 mark.

After Hurricane retook the lead at 29-25 with 2:07 to go until halftime, Kurucz went on a personal 7-0 tear, capped by a steal for a layup and three-point play at 59.4 seconds to propel PHS on top 32-29 and the Big Reds led 32-30 at intermission.

In the third, Snyder sank two free throws at 5:58, then popped in a 3-ball a minute later to push PHS out a 39-32 lead, only to see Hurricane go on an 8-0 spurt to reclaim the lead at 42-41 and the score was knotted at 45-all going to the fourth.

Kurucz canned a trey with 6:05 remaining to be played, squaring things at 50-50. PHS got go-ahead points over the next three minutes from Kurucz thrice and Alison Schumacher once before Snyder drilled a pair of treys at 2:55 and 1:34 to put PHS ahead by five each time, and the Redskins never got any closer than four as the last 60 seconds ticked off the clock.

Hurricane's scoring was paced by Abby Watson with 25 points and 10 from Hannah Thompson

Kurucz said she didn't realize she was scoring that many points, as she "wasn't focused on scoring. I just wanted to do what I had to do for us to win. It's all about the win; I don't care how many points I have."

Her previous high varsity point total was 12 earlier this season.
