Thursday, July 16 PHS girls hold off South, 35-31
PARKERSBURG- Junior Tori Wilson poured in 10 of her team-high 12 points in the second half to lead Parkersburg to a 35-31 come-from-behind victory over crosstown rival Parkersburg South in the championship game of the Wood County Recreation Commission's Summer Basketball big school tournament played at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center Wednesday night. "It (the win) is a confidence booster," said Wilson. "We haven't beaten them (Parkersburg South) in basketball for a very long time so this helps us more mentally than anything else." Trailing by three, 27-24, Wilson ignited a 9-0 run by the visitors with her first trey of the contest. A three-point play by Christine Jacobs gave the Big Reds the lead for good, 30-27, with 5:40 left to play and Wilson capped the dramatic comeback with her second triple of the half to push the visitors on top by six, 33-27. A short jumper by Jessica Moore, who led all scorers with 17 points, pulled the Patriots to within four, 33-29, but that would also be as close as the hosts would get in dropping their first, and only, contest of the two-day tournament. Tiffany Mahoney pushed the margin back to six, 35-29, with a deuce at the two-minute mark. However, those would also prove to be the last points tallied by the girls in red and white. South's Jenna McAtee again sliced the Big Red advantage to four, taking a Sammy Hicks pass and converting the layin at the 1:11 mark. But, just like their arch rivals, the Patriots found the basket closed for the remainder of the game. A steal by Moore gave the red, white and blue a chance to slice the deficit in half with 30 seconds left. But, attempts by Kristiana Hunt and Kayla Dixon came up short and Parkersburg was able to hold off any further attempts at a last-second comeback by their hosts. Parkersburg reached the finals via a 43-25 win over Warren Local in the semifinals while Parkersburg South eliminated Federal Hocking from the tournament with a 50-22 win. Meghan Ruddlesden led eight Big Reds into the scoring column with a game-high nine points while Warren was paced by Taylor Dolak's seven points. Hicks was the top point producer for the Patriots in the semifinals with a game-high 15 points. Federal Hocking was led by Chanda Cuckul's 13 points. |
