Thursday, June 18 PHS Style Mimics those of New GSC Coach GLENVILLE - Two weeks into manning his new post as the head women's basketball coach for Glenville State College, Bunky Harkleroad is just trying to get adjusted to his new surroundings. The former NAIA Division II head coach at Berea College is in the process of closing the family house in Kentucky with wife Shan, 13-year-old daughter Tahni and their two sons, Tory and Ty, who are 14 and 10, respectively. The family isn't expected to move into their new home in Glenville until the first of July. "We've been trying to get things ready for the big move," said Harkleroad, who went 168-93 in nine seasons at Berea. While at Berea, coach Harkleroad's team posted at least 20 or more wins for five consecutive years and he also was the first coach to get the school into the national tournament. For basketball fans wondering what kind of style the new Pioneer boss would like to employ, they need to look no further than the Parkersburg Big Reds of head coach Kenny DeMoss. Just like the PHS girls, coach Harkleroad's teams at Berea loved to play at a frantic pace that involved putting up a lot of shots from 3-point land. In comparison to the Pioneers making 231 shots from 3-point land last winter, Berea made 368 for an average of nearly a baker's dozen a game. "We're going to be very aggressive at both ends of the court," said the coach. "The first thing we are going to do is put our kids in a situation to succeed. "I'm pretty confident we can get up and down the court, put points on the board and be a fun and exciting team to watch." With eight returning players expected to be back in the fold, along with a pair of recruits in Braxton County's Tiffani Huffman and Randi Brundige of PHS already on board, coach Harkleroad said the roster is still likely to expand. Not only has he had some contacts with players who might be interested in walking on, but he said GSC could possibly sign another recruit or two. "I'm very confident we'll have more than 10 players on our roster," he said. "When I came up for my interview, I had lunch with the eight players returning from last year. "They really impressed me with some of the questions they asked me. I felt it was a really good meeting." Currently, the new Pioneer boss is preparing for the upcoming GSC camps and is also working on getting his assistant coach on board. That assistant coach is a former player of coach Harkleroad's - ex-Berea point guard Crystal Davis, who was quite a talent in her playing days. "Hopefully, we can get things finalized there," added the coach. Although the GSC experience is still new for coach Harkleroad, he seems to be settling in quite well. |
