victory for the Lady Dots over Winfield

Story Courtesy Charles Ray Harper

www.putnamlive.com

Playing on the campus of Winfield High School on Friday night April 28th, 2006, this
was a rain make up game for a game of Tuesday, April 25th.

This was the first victory for the Lady Dots over Winfield
since back when Missy Jones, Christin Shamblin ,
Sarah Lett, and Audra Bannister, Nikki Brock's playing days.

There was a very good crowd, they were loud and boisterous, but showed great restraint as we are in Putnam County not Logan County.

Junior Bri Winter pitched a wonderful game as she gave up only 3 hits on the night. Loghan Skeens played just great behind the plate.

The game started off like all Poca - Winfield games as Poca jumped out to a 3 - 0 half inning lead. Then Winfield posted 2 runs and we had a 3 - 2 barn burner after an inning of play. Both defenses settled into a grove and nobody scored until the top of the 6th when the Lady Dots posted two more runs to take a 5 - 2 lead. Poca's defense held in the bottom of the 6th and the Lady Dots added two more runs in the top of the 7th inning and Poca took a 7 - 2 lead. And Poca looked in control and was but nobody knew it after Winfield tacked two more runs to draw closer 7 - 4 but it just wasn't enough. There was Jubilation in Lady Dot - ville with this big 7 - 4 victory.

Having a big bat for the Lady Dots was All-State candidate Ande Dawn Runnion this "Best shortstop I have ever seen" was a perfect 4-for-4 hitting the ball. and drove in two runs. Third baseman Kame Hedrick was 3 for 4 hitting the ball with a triple. Hedrick also drove in two runs and should be on an All State Team somewhere.

Senior first baseman Nikki Hilbert also should be on an all-star team. Bri Winter is one of the best players in the state along with Ande. Senior outfielder Chantel Canterbury also should be All-State as an outfielder or hitter. Loghan Skeens as a catcher has no equal and should be loked at for her defensive skills. Chelsea Staley should also be on a team. 2nd baseman Krista Dudley is also good enough to be on a team. Caitie White is getting better every game and could be on one as a utility player.
As reserves go Poca has the best - Stephanie Witt, Jamie Cool, Hope Quigley, Courtney Chancey, Cassie Cragio, Jackie Cool, Brittany Harrison, Alexis Ward, Brittany Combs, Andrea Celorio, Jordan Rosson, Kenisha Sprouse, Tia Neal, Crissy Echols,

If there are better coaches in AA then Josh Caldwell and David Skeens I want to see them.
I would like to thank Kathy Runnion for all her help over the years and now.

Sophomore Ashlea Wallace had a two run homer for 18 - 10 Winfield. Poca's Lady Dots are now 15 - 12.

LADY DOTS SPLIT WITH SHERMAN 2006

LADY DOTS SPLIT WITH SHERMAN

Varsity Wins, J.V. Comes Up One Run Short

Story Courtesy Charles Ray Harper
wwww.putnamlive.com

The Sherman High Lady Tide came to Poca expecting to win, but the Lady Dots had something to say about that .
It was a nail biter. For three inings you saw nothing but defense, even though both teams had their chances. But strikeouts and good defense left many runners on base.
In the top of the 4th inning Sherman scored two unearned runs off Poca errors to take a 2 - 0 lead . But that didn't hurt these Lady Dots. They played like they had ice water in their veins. Cool, calm and collected.
In Poca's half of the 4th inning, senior shortstop Ande Runnion led off, and got on because of a Sherman error. Most people would have been out, but she never gave up on the play. Then senior 3rd baseman Kame Hedrick got on with a hit. Freshman Jamie Cool ran for Hedrick and worked her way around to third off wild pitches. Then she stole home on a Sherman throwing error, and it was "Deja Vu " as Ande Runion scored the same way and even took the bases the same way, making the score was 2 - 2 after 4 innings of play.
In the 5th inning Bre Winter got on base but nobody could get her hame, And the Lady Dots defense held . In the top of the 6th Sherman took a lead , when the Lady Tide came in on a unearned run and led 3 -2.
In the botom of the 6th The Lady Dots 3rd baseman Kame Hedrick led off with a hard hit. Sherman's shortstop couldn't see more or less and Hedrick made it safely to first. Then senior 1st baseman Nikki Hilbert had a hit that moved Hedrick around the bases. Freshman Brittany Harrison scored from third when junior 2nd baseman Krista Dudley got on with an error. Harrison scored on another error on the Sherman throw and the game was tied 3 - 3 again.

Poca was playing with a heart of a champion, but they weren't doing my heart any good. The Lady Dots were leaving too many on base. But Senior Kame Hedrick put an end to that as she doubled a changeup to deep left field scoring senior Ande Runnion who had got on base off another Lady Tide error ( Ande just finds ways to get on for the Lady Dots. )

The Dots' leading hitter was Kame Hedrick who was 3-for-4 batting the ball. She also had a booming double to win the game.

Senior right fielder Caitie White walked and got on off an error and drove in 2 runs. Ande Runnion got on base off 2 Lady Tide errors and scored the winning run and stole 4 bases. Senior centerfielder Chantel Canterbury had a hit in the 2nd inning and got on off a Lady Tide error and stole a couple bases. Senior 1st baseman Niki Hilbert was 2 of 3 hitting the ball . Bri Winter got on off an Lady Tide Error. Senior leftfielder Chelsea Straley hit the ball hard but righ at somrone. Junior 2nd baseman Krista Dudley got on off a Lady Tide error. Senior Stephanie Witt was a pinch hitter and the ball was hit hard but right at someone.

On defense the Lady Dots played well - Bri Winter to start with pitched a great game ( a few days ago she struckout 13 of the first 19 Logan players she faced, great job. ) Bri had some out standing Innings , Bri struckout 7 Lady Tide players , and scattered 4 hits . she got out of the 2nd and the 3rd innings siting down 2 Sherman batters in both innings with strikeouts .

Poca's shortstop Ande Runion , stabs anything near her. As for their first baseman not much gets by Nikki Hilbert. Third baseman Kame Hedrick dug out two balls. One in the 5th inning and another in the 6th. I didn't think anybody could get to either.

Poca's 2nd baseman Krista Dudley played a great game. The outfield is getting better every time I see them. Senior Chelsea Staley in left field, Chantel Canterbury in centerfield, and Caitie White in right field. ( Staley is a great pitcher in her own right, Poca is blessed with two. )

The last three outs of the game were made by The Lady Dots. Bri Winter struck out. The 2nd out was Kame Hedrick dug one out at 3rd base and whipped it to Nikki Hilbert at first base. The third out was a weird play from catcher Loghan Skeens to 1st then back to Caitie White who threw the girl out at first when Nikki Hilbert got her out.

Poca's catcher played hard (You should try it sometime it is rough. I have been there). But Loghan Skeens is one of the best defensive catchers around. Loghan Skeens made a beautiful throw to 2nd base to catch the runner trying to take 2nd, but Loghan shot her down when shortstop Ande Runnion tagged her before the runner could get to 2nd.

The Lady Dots burned Sherman's hopes like General Sherman burned Atlanta in 1864. The Coach's game plan looked great. Josh Caldwell never gets the credit he deserves. He did have help from David Skeens. And it was nice to see Holly Miller helping them coach the Lady Dots. I would like to thank Kathy Runnon who has helped me in many ways over the years.

My Poca Student reporter Sophore Cassie Craigo also helped and Crissy Echols helped with the JV game.

Sherman Lady Tide   0   0    2   0   1   0 - 3    4    5         Poca Lady Dots         0   0   2    0   1   1 - 4    6    1

J.V. Loses A Close One

In the JV game it was another barn burner . The Ladys from Sherman took a 1 - 0 lead .But in the bottom half of the first The Lady Dots took control back from the Lady Tide . Led by leadof hitter Centerfielder Courtney Chancy's Triple she scored on Andrea Celorio's hit. Then 3rd baseman Cassie Cragio walked , then Centerfielder Brittany Harrison drove in Andrea with a hit. Pitcher Hope Quigley helped her own cause driving in 2 runs with a Double ( she had 3 RBI's on the day). And 2nd baseman Jackie Cool cappd the 1st inning with a hit that drove in Hope and gave the Lady Dots a 5 - 1 lead after an inning.

The Lady Tide were not done just yet. They scored 3 unanswered runs in the 2nd to draw within 1 run, 5 - 4.

When it looked like the game was over, in the top of the 3rd inning Sherman struck for 4 runs and a 8 - 5 lead. And after 4 innings it was still 8 - 5 and it didn't look good for the Lady Dots but you can't never count these Lady Dots out.

In the bottom of the 4th inning the Lady Dots mounted a mighty comeback of their own. Freshman shortstop Jamie Cool led off with a walk and scored off freshman Andrea Celoro's hit, and then stole hom on a wild pitch . Sophmore 3rd baseman Cassie Craigo got a walk ( for some reason they didn't want to pitch to this fine 3rd baseman maybe they where afraid to. ) Casie scored , when freshmn Brittany Harrison got on off a Lady Tide Error. Freshman Hope Quigley scored Brittany with a hit. Freshman 1st baseman Jordan Rosson capped the scoring by driving in Hope Quigley who scored the capper the 10th run.

On defense the Lady Dots JV started on a strong note when starting Dots pitcher Hope Quuigley struckout the first Sherman batter she faced. Hope pitched a pretty good game she scattered 4 hits and she struckout 3 Tide batters .

The Lady Dots had a big double play in the 2nd inning , Pitcher Hope Quigley fielded a hard hit line drive and promptly threw it to Jordan Rosson for the 1st out, she then threw a strike to Cassie Cragio at 3rd who tagged the runner out for the 2nd out. Shortstop Jamie Cool stabed a hard hit fly at short for the final out in the 2nd inning.

After Poca scored they had to hold The Tide in the top of the 5th inning for the win which they did. Here are the final three outs of the game - 1 - first one was a Hope Quigley strikeout, 2 - was a pop out to 3rd baseman Cassie Craigo, 3 - was when Catcher Courtney Chancey threw out the Tide runne at first to Jordan Rosson. Which ended the game with a Poca 10 - 8 come from behind victory.

In the game Courtney Chancey played well behind the plate . And the infield played well as did the outfield of Alexis Ward in right field, Brittany Harrison in center field, and Andrea Celorio in left field.

Crissy Echols played some at first and batted and played well

Kenisha Sprouse played some in right field and playd well and batted. Tia Neal also played some in the outfield and played well and batted. Britany Combs is on the injured reserve list.

Poca's junior Pitcher Bri Winter scattered 5 hits in a complete 7 inning game for the win and was outstanding on the mound.

Senior shortstop Ande Runion put on a hitting show Ande was a perfect 3 for 3 and knocked in 4 runs and had a double. Chelsea Staley didn't have a bad bat herself, she could have been part of the show as Chelsea was 3 of 4 at the plate. and she hit two doubles . Krista Dudley also had a double. Loghan Skeens was the winning catcher.

Caitie White played well in the outfield. Chantel Cantebury has played well all year for the ( 6 - 4 ) Lady Dots. Kame Hedrick also played well

Poca JV wins Big 20-0!

04goochslide2
Poca Lady Dots JV played after the Varsity game against Hamlin Thurs. 25th. The Varsity couldn’t pull off the win 5-11; the Dots had some great plays and big hits like a triple from freshman Brea Winter. But the errors out weighted them this game.
The Poca JV team played a great game winning 20-0 in four innings with Miller pitching a one hitter. All the girls crushed the ball, with a in the fence home run, triple, and many doubles and singles.

holly tag
Poca Lady Dots hosted Guyan Valley Tuesday April 1st. The Dots played well against ranked 2 in single A Guyan Valley. The game was tied 1 to 1 , the Dots went ahead scoring then the unfortunately had a few errors letting Valley score a few runs. The Dots came back with some good hits leaving 3 on base , they just couldn’t get the gurls home to score with the Dots coming up short this time. The girls played good, but need the bats to be stronger in the beginning. Good luck with GW away gurls , get the bats going.

Sat. 21st the Lady Dots hosted a home game with Hamlin. The day was great for softball, sun out and no rain. The Dots came out strong with the hitting. They made great plays in the field, had a great run down from 3rd to home, at least 6 girls past the ball back and forth with the Dots getting the player out. Practice paid off on that one! The Dots bats were hot with a couple of triples , doubles , and a bunch of steals. The girls surprised everyone with the great way they played , Poca girls won 14 - 4 , great job girls and keep it up.
The JV played hard and had some great hits with a triple out to the fence and some singles. Great job JV.

The Softball Prayer

Lord, give me the strength to hit the ball
And if I do dont let me fall
Help me to pick the right pitch thats right
Then let me knock it out of sight

Then let me run like the wind
But plaese dont let me miss first base
Then on to 2nd, stay with me Lord,
Cause this one out we can't afford

Then let me zoom like a flying bird
Right down the line and on to third
Then let me slide with feet out - thrust
Across the plate in the swishing dust

BUT FIRST OF ALL, DEAR LORD, I PRAY JUST TELL THE COACH TO LET ME PLAY
