OREGON - CORVALLIS, Ore. - November 4, 2011 - Soccer Civil War ends is 1-1 tie - Neither team could come away with an outright win in the soccer portion of the Civil War as the University of Oregon (8-9-3, 3-6-2 Pac-12) came from behind to tie #21  Oregon State (13-5-2, 7-3-1), 1-1, on a chilly Friday night at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis in front of 1, 401 fans.  It is the third time in five years that the teams have tied in the series. In 2007 and 2008 the teams played into ties, while the Ducks dropped games in 2009 and 2010.  "We played very well and hard against a talented Oregon State team," said Oregon head coach Tara Erickson." We defended well all over the field and moved on both offense and defense. That was probably one of our most complete games of the season. Maddy Mercier, as an outside back, played awesome and Abby (Steele) played well in goal. Scout (Libke) and LT (Lauren Thompson) played very organized against some good Oregon State forwards and our younger players played  great in their first Civil War."

SAN FRANCISCO - SAN FRANCISCO, CA - November 4, 2011 - Joan Piasta scored two goals Sunday as the University of San Francisco women's soccer team finished the 2011 season by shutting out visiting CSU Bakersfield 4-0 at Negoesco Stadium. WESTERN WASHINGTON - BELLINGHAM, Wash. - November 2, 2011 - Midfielder Kelly Cates (Sr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) was honored for the second straight year, heading four members of the Western Washington University women's soccer team named to the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic all-star team released today. "I can’t give enough credit to our incredible senior class who have given blood, sweat and tears to our program. I am so proud and honored to be a part of their lives and to witness their drive and enthusiasm for success. All six seniors have played a massive role this week in bringing us to success again in the SSC post season. We play a very difficult schedule to prepare ourselves for post season play and it has paid dividends once again. This is a very difficult conference to win and we have shown the mental fortitude to do it once more." This marks the second consecutive postseason league title for the Spartans, who have now captured a league-record five tourney crowns.

WESTERN WASHINGTON - BELLINGHAM, Wash. - October 29, 2011 - Western Washington University celebrated Senior Day in style, defeating Western Oregon University, 3-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Saturday afternoon at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus. Goals from Brina Sych (So., Vancouver/Union), Kristen Maris (So., Issaquah) and Megan Chapin (Sr., Seattle/Garfield) lifted the Vikings to 9-5-3 overall and 8-4-1 in the GNAC. WWU, which is unbeaten (3-0-1) in its last four games, completed its home schedule with a 6-1-3 record.

Sych opened the scoring in the 35th minute, fighting off two defenders to win a long pass from Emily Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley) and calmly finish from 12 yards out. "It makes such a big difference when we can score first, and in the first half," said WWU head coach Travis Connell (9th year). "It totally changes the game."

Chapin and Warman were two of seven WWU seniors playing their final home game. The others were Kelly Cates (Poulsb/North Kitsap), Emily Frankland (Sammamish/Skyline), Katie Griffith (Burlington/Burlington-Edison), Justina MacDowell (Bellevue/Sammamish) and Alicia Patten (Seattle/Holy Names Academy). SAINT MARTINS - LACEY, WA – October 30, 2011 -  Dani Eldridge scored the lone goal of the game to give Saint Martin's the 1-0 victory over Simon Fraser in their final Great Northwest Athletic Conference home match of the season Sunday afternoon at the SMU Soccer Field.  The goal came in the 61st minute. After a bit of a scramble Eldridge found the ball and with her back to the goal sent an overhead kick at the net and over the head of the SFU keeper for the eventual game-winner. Simon Fraser goalie Amelia Ng recorded nine saves as the Saints outshot the Clan 19-2 in the contest. SMU also held a 9-2 edge on corner kicks. Ashley Engel and Gina Cardenas picked up one save each as they split time in goal for SMU.  More information HERE.

EASTERN WASHINGTON - OGDEN, Utah - October 31, 2011 - The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team had five players recognized on the All-Big Sky Conference teams, which were released Monday (Oct. 31) by the league office. Highlighting the list for EWU was senior forward Whitney Brannan, who was selected to the All-Big Sky Second Team. This is Brannan's third-straight year as a conference all-star, as she was on the honorable mention squad in 2009 and 2010. Also earning a shout-out this season was senior Dashia Huff, juniors Lauren Jacobsen and Jamie Walker and freshman Katie Cashman, who were all named to the All-Big Sky Honorable Mention team.  More information HERE.

OCCIDENTAL - LOS ANGELES, Calif. - October 29, 2011 - It may have been a handball in the box and it may have been offsides, but the whistle didn't blow, the flag stayed down and the Occidental College women's soccer team almost knocked off No. 9 Cal Lutheran University. Instead of handing the Regals (19-1, 12-0) their first loss since Oxy beat them 1-0 last season on Oct. 6 and foiling their undefeated season, the Tigers conclude the year with a gutsy effort and what could have been quite a sendoff for six seniors whose careers as student-athletes came to a close on Saturday night at Jack Kemp Stadium. The Tigers say goodbye to six seniors. Maddy Rasch (Seattle, WA), Liz Martin (Fremont, CA), Bree Geary (Del Mar, CA), Alex McHenry (Denver, CO), Kellee Murayama (Waipahu, HI) and Lauren Johnson (Chicago, IL) all will graduate in the spring.  Game details HERE.

OREGON - EUGENE, Ore.- October 30, 2011 - The University of Oregon (8-9-2, 3-6-1 Pac-12) fell to the 2011 Pac-12 Regular Season champion Stanford Cardinal (18-0-1, 10-0 Pac-12) on Senior Day and at the last soccer game ever at Pape' Field in front of over 700 fans on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The condition of the field slowed down both teams as a downpour caused the field to be muddy and led to many slides and missed opportunities. Stanford was awarded two corner kicks to open the first 45 minutes of action before Oregon committed fouls giving the ball back to the Cardinal to set up their first shot. A little over nine minutes into action, the Cardinal's Lindsay Taylor was able to plant and put her foot into a shot, but senior Lindsay Parlee, who got the start in goal today, was able to garner the save. The Ducks did not sit back and took their first shot of the match at 11:15, but junior Maddy Mercier was not able to connect and the shot went wide. Stanford eventually won the match 2-0.  More game details available HERE.

PORTLAND STATE - HILLSBORO, Ore. – October 20, 2011 - Portland State women's soccer team held on for an important 1-0 victory over Weber State at Hillsboro Stadium. The Vikings (7-7-2 overall, 3-1-2 Big Sky Conference) picked up the all-important three points in the standings with the win Thursday and now sits atop the Big Sky Conference Standings with 11 total points. The Vikings need another three points and a Northern Colorado loss, or two Northern Colorado ties, to claim the Big Sky regular season championship and the honors of hosting the conference tournament. After a Weber State (6-10-1, 3-2-1) foul just outside their own 18-yard box on the near side, Portland State lined up for a free kick. Senior Toni Carnovale set up for the free kick but then passed it to Dutra in the middle of the field. Dutra one-touched the ball behind her, dribbled left and blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net past the Wildcats' keeper Ryann Waldman to take the early 1-0 advantage just second into the 12th minute. Western Washington's Megan Chapin

WESTERN WASHINGTON - BELLINGHAM, Wash. - October 20, 2011 - A massive advantage in shot attempts didn't produce a goal for Western Washington University as it tied Montana State University Billings, 0-0 in overtime, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Thursday afternoon at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus. The Vikings, who are now 6-5-3 overall and 5-4-1 in GNAC action, had a 24-6 shot advantage. Western's best chance came in the 25th minute, when a pass by Joanna Houplin (Jr., Olympia) put Megan Chapin (Sr., Seattle/Garfield) behind the MSUB defense. Chapin hit a shot low to the left post, but Gordon sprawled to tip the ball around the post for a corner. Game details HERE.

OREGON - EUGENE, Ore. October 23, 2011 - EUGENE, Ore- Junior Scout Libke notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 80th minute of action, but the goal did not hold up as the University of Washington (6-6-4, 2-3-2 Pac-12) scored one of their own in the 89th minute of play, causing the match to end in a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Pape' Field. Fans could tell that the match was going to be a physical one from the start of the horn from two very similar teams. The Ducks (7-7-2, 2-4-1 Pac-12) started off in a 4-4-2 format and the strength of the backline, especially from redshirt junior Lauren Thompson shined through for UO to keep the match very competitive. Read all about the game HERE.

EASTERN WASHINGTON - CHENEY, WA - October 21, 2011 - After 110 minutes of competitive play, neither Eastern Washington nor Northern Colorado could come away with a victory on Friday (Oct. 21) in Cheney, Wash., as the Eagles and Bears ended the Big Sky Conference match deadlocked at 1-1. Eastern scored right out of the gate, and then held on to that one-goal lead for nearly 70 minutes. But the Bears managed to find the equalizer on a lucky rebound off a free kick. The Eagles were out-shot by UNC, 24-9, and the margin may have been even wider had it not been for the play of Eastern's center back, senior Dashia Huff. With time dwindling down in the second half, the Bears began to pressure heavily, but Huff's sharp defense prevented two shot opportunities from dangerous range. Game details available HERE.

More on game HERE.

EASTERN WASHINGTON - OGDEN, UT - October 15, 2011 - Eagles shut out Wildcats, 3-0 for first win of Big Sky Season. After coming away empty handed despite a number of quality scoring opportunities in its first four Big Sky games, the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team finally found the back of the net - three times in fact. People are going to look at this game and think 'They won 3-0 … really?' But we've been playing well all season, and have had a chance to win every Big Sky match. It was good to see the hard work finally pay off." Senior Whitney Brannan had a hand in all three of EWU's goals, scoring one and assisting on the other two. WESTERN WASHINGTON - BELLINGHAM, WA - September 5, 2011 - Game details aviable HERE and HERE.

WESTERN WASHINGTON - BELLINGHAM, WA - September 3, 2011 - by Andrew Lang, Bellingham Herald Sports - Patten anchors Vikings' stalwart defense. Senior defender Alicia Patten likes it best when she doesn't have to touch the ball during the Western Washington University women's soccer team's matches. It's not that she doesn't enjoy the sport she excels at or that she wilts under pressure. Rather, protecting her goal is Patten's responsibility, and when she's not active, it means her team is on the attack.

"I like being the last person back," said Patten, who was a first-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection each of the past two years. "The team really relies on you, whether it's making a hard tackle or whatever. Some games you don't get any action, but if (the ball) comes in your box, you need to get it out."  You can read all about Alicia and the rest of the 2011 Vikings team HERE.

Eastern's Dashia Huff

EASTERN WASHINGTON - BOISE, ID - AUGUST 26, 2011 - After one half of stellar play, the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team failed to capture its first win of the young season, falling to the Boise State Broncos 2-1 at the 2011 Bronco Invite in Boise, Idaho. Unfortunately the game wasn't the biggest loss of the day for the Eagles, as senior defender Dashia Huff was injured and had the leave the field with 15 minutes remaining in the game. Her status is unknown. Game details available HERE.

OREGON - EUGENE, Ore. - August 28, 2011 - Junior Julie Armstrong netted her second goal of the season five minutes into Sunday afternoon's match to give Oregon (3-0) a 1-0 victory over UNLV (1-3) at Pape' Field. Just under 500 fans turned out to watch the Ducks get off to their best start since the 2007 campaign. With the win, UO notched its third consecutive shutout of the season, matching the mark for most consecutive shutouts in program history. The win also gives Oregon back-to-back home opener wins. After Armstrong's goal, the aggressive Ducks did not stop creating opportunities to put more goals up on the scoreboard. Junior Nicole Bakke followed up with another shot six minutes into action that was converted into a save. Junior Maddy Mercier received the rebound and put another shot toward the goal, but UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell was able to notch another save. Read the rest of the story HERE.

TAMPA - ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2010 Sunshine State Conference tournament champion University of Tampa women’s soccer team will enter the 2011 season at No. 2 in the SSC preseason poll. A talented core of senior returners includes midfielder Samantha Kay (3 G, 4 A), forward Brittan Spence (8 G) and defender Charlotte White (3G) as assist leader and junior midfielder Courtney Peffley is also back after notching 14 assists as a sophomore. More available HERE.

WESTERN WASHINGTON - BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Aug. 30, 2011 - Goals will be hard to come by Thursday (7 p.m.) when the Western Washington University women's soccer team opens its season against nationally No.2-ranked UC San Diego at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC. The Vikings return the core of a defense that allowed just 10 goals in 18 games as they finished 10-4-4 in 2010. Leading that unit are senior defender Alicia Patten (Seattle/Holy Names Academy) and junior goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs (Richland). More on build up available HERE.

PORTLAND STATE - HILLSBORO, Ore. - August 28, 2011 - The Portland State women's soccer team took the lead early and held on late to defeat Idaho by a score of 2-1 Sunday afternoon in front of a season-high crowd of 537 at Hillsboro Stadium. Melissa Trammell scored her second goal of the season in the 10th minute of Sunday's match. Esty Geiger drove the ball deep into the Vandal's 18-yard box where Trammell headed it in to give the Vikings the early 1-0 advantage. “When we put pressure on the ball on defense we play a lot better,” Portland State head coach Laura Schott said following Sunday's win. “I think when we came out and did that it set a tone for us. It was a really competitive game.” More game details available HERE.

OCCIDENTAL - LOS ANGELES, Calif. — When the 2011 Occidental College women's soccer team showed up for their first team meeting on Aug. 25 with the taste of last year's conference championship loss still lingering in their mouths, someone had to comment on the big, ugly elephant in the room. So head coach Colm McFeely didn't wait.

Printed on bright orange paper in the stack of paperwork that he handed to his team was the game story of last year's double overtime loss to the University of Redlands in the SCIAC final. The surprise reading material wasn't to kick the team when they were down, but to show them of what their season could be.

"I think that it has been adding up a little bit every year," said senior center back and captain Maddy Rasch. "This senior class has extra motivation." Three of the team's five all-league players are returning from last year's squad—Rasch, Kellee Murayama and Elissa Minamishin. It will be on Rasch to organize the team's defense and make sure opponents goal scorers are accounted for. "It's my responsibility to lead from the back," Rasch said. "That's going to be important to give direction from behind." You can read the entire article HERE.

Oregon's Maddy Mercier

OREGON - BOISE, Idaho - August 19, 2011 - The University of Oregon soccer team opened its 2011 season with a 2-0 neutral-site win over Wyoming on Friday at the Boise State Tournament. Junior midfielder Maddy Mercier and freshman forward Bri Pugh scored goals for the Ducks. “This was a good way to start the season,” head coach Tara Erickson said. “It was a good win for us. All the young players were excited, and after they got into the game they became a little more seasoned. We played 20 players and everyone contributed. It was a huge learning experience for those kids.” A pair of veteran Ducks gave UO a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute. Mercier, from Edmonds, Wash., redirected (into the net) a crossing pass from fellow junior midfielder Julie Armstrong. “The returning players gave us tremendous leadership, helping the younger players adapt to their first college minutes,” Erickson said.  Read more about the game HERE.

WESTERN WASHINGTON - BELLINGHAM, Wash. - August 19, 2011 - The foundation of the Western Washington University women's soccer team will be built on its defense in 2011. The Vikings return eight starters from a team that was 10-4-4 and finished fourth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 7-4-3. Leading those returnees is the heart of a defense that allowed just 10 goals in those 18 games. Anchoring the defense are two seniors. Alicia Patten (Seattle/Holy Names Academy) has started 51 games in her career, earning second-team Daktronics all-region and first-team all-GNAC honors at center back each of the last two seasons.

In the wide midfield spots, seniors Emily Frankland (Sammamish/Skyline) and Katie Griffith (Burlington/Burlington-Edison) figure to be the starters. Frankland, who missed last season with a knee injury, has 13 goals, seven of them game winners, and eight assists in her career. Frankland has also spent time at forward, and many of the players slated to play up front are also comfortable in the midfield. Joana Houplin (Olympia) started every game last year, and had three goals and four assists, and junior Megan Chapin (Seattle/Garfield) had a goal and three assists in the first nine games before having her season end with a knee injury. They, along with freshman Taylor Abrass (Mercer Island), give Western an element of speed up front that the Vikings have lacked in recent seasons. Western's top returning scorer, however, still provides a more physical target player - sophomore Kristen Maris (Issaquah), who had four goals and two assists last season. "Chapin, Houpin, Abrass, Frankland, all of them are just burners," said Coach Travis Connell. "We have a ton of pace up front. We'll be able to stretch the field, and to pressure the opposition backs more. More on the Vikings HERE.

As a team captain this fall, Rasch made the transition from midfield to form a central defensive partnership with Falkler-Rodriguez that was the heart of Occidental's success during their 2010 campaign.

When asked about her role this season, McFeely shared, "Maddy was a key component in the back for a team that had 10 shutouts and conceded only six regular season goals in conference play. Her reading of the game, communication, decision making and composure on the ball coupled with her competitive drive made her extremely hard to beat."

The girls had a great spring and we knew at that point that we were capable of something special this year. We knew that our freshman group were talented and would give us the depth we needed to push hard within our conference and region."  Game Details available HERE.
