DUNCAN JOINS PHOENIX COACHING STAFF

Following three very successful years of coaching the Kettle Moraine-Mukwonago high school hockey program, Chris Duncan and his assistant, Kevin Cline, have joined the PHOENIX HOCKEY coaching staff.  They will work with Peter Bakovic coaching the Midget Minor (16U) Team.

As the KMM Varsity Head Coach, Chris compiled an impressive 51-17-1 record.  In his tenure, his teams made two trips to the WIAA State Championship and won a Classic Eight Conference Championship.  Previously, the KMM hockey program had never won a conference championship or played in a state tournament.

Chris grew up and played hockey in Onalaska, WI, coached for five years in the Waukesha County Youth Hockey Association and has a Level 5 "Masters" coaching certification from USA Hockey.  In 2006, Chris was named the WIAA Section 7 "Coach of the Year".  We welcome Chris and Kevin to PHOENIX HOCKEY and are confident that they will make significant contributions to the development of the "committed" high school hockey players who participate in the program.

PHOENIX TEAMS TO PARTICIPATE IN TIER II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
On Tuesday October 2nd, the program received official notification from the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) that both teams will participate in the Tier II State Tournament in the Spring of 2007 without having to play in a November Playoff. Six Tier II teams in each age division (16U & 18U) will travel to Capitol Ice in Middleton to determine who advances to the USA Hockey Central District Championship in St. Louis. The winner in St. Louis will advance to the USA Hockey National Championship which will be played in Fraser, MI. Fraser is about fifteen miles north of downtown Detroit.

If there had been more than two "Non-League" (WHSEL - Wisconsin High School Elite League) teams entered at each age level, a November Playoff would have been necessary. The Phoenix Teams will be joined by two other teams - the Green Bay Bobcats (18U) and the Northern Wisconsin Blizzards (16U). The other four teams at each age level will be decided by a WHSEL "year-end" tournament. Two of the six WHSEL teams will be eliminated at each age level by that tournament.

The Tier II State Championship will be held the weekend of March 9-11, 2007 in Middleton at Capitol Ice. Dates for the Central Districts in St. Louis and the Tier II FINALS in Fraser, Michigan can be found on the website "Calendar".

SUCCESSFUL FALL SESSION ENDS ON POSITIVE NOTE
During the last weekend of the "Fall Session" both the Major and Minor teams played games at the MSOE KERN CENTER. Of the four games played by the two teams, the program walked away with three wins and one loss against formidable opponents.

The Major Team (18U) wrapped up their 20 game "before" schedule with a 4-3 hard fought victory over the Rockford Icemen. That win gave them a final record of 12-7-1 against strong AAA, top high school, and upper echelon Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL) opponents. In September, the team traveled to Houghton, MI to participate in the AAA Ojibwa Eagle's "Superior Cup" Tournament. Fourteen of their twenty games were played on HOME ICE at the KERN CENTER.

Over the weekend, three teams visited Milwaukee for a "Round Robin" hosted by the Minor Team (16U). In their first of three games the Minors downed the Darien Huskies 4-2. In game two they beat a strong Northern Wisconsin Bizzards team by a score of 2-0. The final game went right down to the wire with the Mad City Devils scoring a goal in the final seconds to win 6-5. Two out of three is a strong finish. The final "before" record for the Minors was 6-12-2. Their schedule included tournaments in Detroit, St. Louis and Des Moines.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR HIGH SCHOOL TRYOUTS AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR RETURN IN THE SPRING TO COMPETE IN THE TIER II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!
