The successful “Fall Session” ended for both teams the weekend of Nov. 6-8, 2009 with each hosting an Invitational Round Robin event at the Kern Center.  Visiting Milwaukee for games at the Midget Major level were the CSDHL Northwest Chargers, the Rockford Icemen and Shattuck-St. Mary’s AAA.  At the Midget Minor level, attending were Loyola Academy, Maine Township and Shattuck-St. Mary’s AA. 

Of the 24 teams that were on the two team’s “Fall Session” game schedules, 9 were Tier I (AAA) programs.  The Phoenix Force (18U) team finished with a 8-11-3 record and the Phoenix (16U) team closed out the session with a record of 10-8-4.  The players, who represented 18 different Wisconsin high schools, concluded their 22 game schedules Sunday, Nov. 8^th.  On Monday, Nov. 9^th, they all attended the tryouts for their high school teams. 

The players for both teams will return to PHOENIX HOCKEY for the "Spring Session" to compete for a USA Hockey Tier II National Championship in late February of 2010 when they complete their high school seasons.

Phoenix Force players SAM FRANK (Defense - Kettle Moraine Mukwonago) and DEVIN STUERMER (Forward - Catholic Memorial / Pius) have been named by the sports staff at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to the 2009 ALL-AREA HOCKEY TEAM.  Joining Sam and Devin on the first team are BRIAN BERGER (Forward - Arrowhead), TOM CHAPIN (Defense - Catholic Memorial / Pius), NICK KOHN (Goalie - Arrowhead) and CONNOR MCBRIDE (Forward - Arrowhead).  Nick Kohn received "Player of the Year" honors and the Arrowhead Warhawks Coach Carl Valimont was named "Coach of the Year".

DAVID CLARK, Phoenix Force forward from Arrowhead, received second team honors.

Phoenix Force players DAVID CLARK (Forward - Arrowhead) and DEVIN STUERMER (Forward - CMH/Pius), based on their performance at the Senior Class Tournament in Waupun, earned an invitation to the 2009 Team Wisconsin Tryout Camp held in Stevens Point on April 4-5.  Their performance in Stevens Point led each to be selected to the 20 player Chicago Showcase roster.  The list of 46 players attending the Stevens Point tryout included Force player BLAINE DISRUD (Defense - Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago). 

The Chicago Showcase will be held in Bensenville, IL for the 25th consecutive year April 15-19, 2009.  The event is among the most heavily scouted high school tournaments in the world.  Scouts and coaches from all levels of hockey (junior, college and even professional) attend the event.

Phoenix Force forward GAVIN HARTZOG was selected the tournament MVP at the 2008 Chicago Showcase and now plays for the USHL Fargo Force and has signed a letter of intent to play hockey for the University of Wisconsin as a result of his performance at last year's event.

It is hard work and determination that gets players to this level.  CONGRATULATIONS to David and Devin!

Following a very successful tryout that was attended by players from 30 different high schools, the rosters for the upcoming "Before & After" season have been finalized.  The coaches look forward to getting on the ice for the team's first practices at the KERN CENTER on Monday, August 17th.  Preparation for the trip to Detroit for the Little Caesar's Motor City Cup the weekend of September 11-13 will begin immediately.  Both teams will travel to Faribault, MN for games with Shattuck St.-Mary's the first weekend in October.  As the game schedule begins to fill out, confirmed games will be posted on each team's sub-site.  We are all looking forward to a very exciting PHOENIX HOCKEY "Fall Session"! 

Eight (8) Phoenix Force players have been selected through a tryout process to represent their section at the SENIOR TOURNAMENT in Waupun the weekend of March 27-29, 2009.  From all of the players participating in the tournament from eight sections in Wisconsin, players will be selected to attend the 2009 Team Wisconsin Tryout Camp to be held April 4-5, 2009 in Stevens Point.  From that tryout camp, 20 players and alternates will be invited to play in the Chicago Showcase on the Team Wisconsin roster.

Phoenix defenseman SAM FRANK (Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago) has been named by the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association (WHCA) to their All-State Team.  Sam was placed on the first team along with seven other defensemen.  Other Phoenix players recognized were forwards DAVID CLARK (Arrowhead) and DEVIN STUERMER (CMH/Pius).  David and Devin were both selected in the honorable mention category.  

On Saturday afternoon, March 7th, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) crowned the Hartland Arrowhead Warhawks the 2009 high school hockey CHAMPION.  Congratulations to Phoenix players DAVID CLARK, CAL ESSIG, BRENDAN GARVEY, TONY KOEHLER, and JAKE MICHAEL.  All five (5) players participated in the Arrowhead hockey program and made significant contributions to the program's success during the 2008-2009 season.  Arrowhead defeated a strong Fond du Lac team 5-1 in the final game.

Phoenix Force players CODY MERTENS (Forward - Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago) and DYLAN TALKOVIC (Defense - CMH/Pius) have been nominated and selected to receive the prestigious HOBEY BAKER HIGH SCHOOL CHARACTER AWARD sponsored by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation.  All recipients are selected by their high school coach based on a number of character and sportsmanship related qualities.

The goal of the award is to develop, recognize, and reward exemplary character and sportsmanship demonstrated by high school hockey players.  The development and recognition of exemplary character and sportsmanship is an extremely important aspect of the student-athlete experience.  This high school level award is a natural extension of the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award given annually to the nation's top collegiate hockey player and sportsman.

Phoenix Force defenseman, SAM FRANK, has been selected by the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association (WHCA) as one of eight (8) finalist for the 2009 American Family Insurance/WHCA "Player of the Year" award.  Sam plays high school hockey for the Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago co-op program.  The KMM team has a record of 14-4-1 and is currently Honorable Mention status in the State's TOP TEN voting.  Sam has contirbuted to the team's success with 25 points (13 goals and 12 assists).  In the spring of 2007, Sam and his Phoenix Force teammates (including his brother JD) played in the USA Hockey Tier II National Championship Game and finished runner-up losing to the Michigan Jaguars 2-1. 

The other seven (7) players who join Sam as finalists for this prestigious award are: PAT DALBEC (Superior), BRANDON GWIDT (Lakeland), ANDREW MARTIN (Stoughton), Ross Mauermann (Janesville), CODY STRANG (Madison Edgewood), JORDON TREDINNICK (Onalaska) and TOMMY WESTMARK (Appleton).

The winner will be announced during the WIAA State Tournament week in Madison.

Once again, Waupun will host the ANNUAL SENIOR TOURNAMENT on the weekend of March 27-29, 2009.  A team chosen from tryouts held in each of the eight WIAA Sections will travel to Waupun to compete for the Championship.  The tryouts involving Phoenix Seniors will be held on Sunday, March 8th.  Players in Section 7 will tryout in Janesville and those in Section 8 will tryout at the University School rink.  Tryout dates and times are now posted on the calendar which can be accessed in the menu on the left edge of this page.

Players participating in the Waupun Tournament will be selected to attend a camp/tryout to compete for a roster position on the team that will represent Wisconsin at the Chicago Showcase in April 2009.  Former Phoenix Force forward GAVIN HARTZOG was the MVP of the 2008 tournament and Team Wisconsin was crowned the Champion.  Gavin currently plays for the USHL Fargo Force and has been offered a scholarship to play hockey for the University of Wisconsin.

DEVIN STUERMER, Phoenix Force forward, is featured in an article titled "Memorial/Pius boasts a virtuoso" that appeared in the 1/19/08 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel sports section.  After playing 14 games, Devin has posted 28 points (10 goals and 18 assists).  His team is ranked number one in the area with a 11-2-1 record.  Wisconsin Prep Hockey currently ranks Catholic Memorial/Pius #6 in the State.  Devin has made a significant contribution to the team's success.  He credits the strong play of his line mates Noah Lentz (22 pts.) and Trent Nienas (20 pts.) for his individual success.

The "Fall Session" ended on Sunday, November 9th with both teams playing well down the stretch.  Each team concluded the session having played 22 very competitive games and participating in almost the same number of practices.  The Midget Major Team (Phoenix Force) won four out of their last eight games taking two from the Green Bay Bobcats in their last weekend of play.  In their last eight games, the Midget Minor Team (Phoenix) won six which included four straight games in the Chicago Fall Classsic held in Romeoville, IL to win the championship.  The Minor team beat the Green Bay Bobcats and lost to the Chicago Young Americans to close out their fall schedule.  Team parties were held following each team's last home game at Mcgillycuddy's on Water Street. 

All of the players report to their high school tryouts on Monday, November 10th.  Good luck with your high school tryout and we look forward to seeing all of you again in late February for the "Spring Session".

It was a weekend of strong, team hockey that allowed the Midget Minor team to win all four games and be crowned the Chicago Fall Classic "CHAMPIONS".  The Midget Minor AA Tournament was presented by Advanced Tournaments. 

On Friday evening in Game 1 the Phoenix bested the Penguins (Texas) 5-2 to get off to a fast start.  In Game 2 on Saturday afternoon, the Renegades (Colorado) were victims losing to the Phoenix 4-1.  The Phoenix defeated the Hornets (Canada) by a 8-0 score in Game 3 on Saturday evening.  Game 4, based on tournament points, ended up being the Championship Game vs. the 16U WAHA Selects (Madison, WI).  In a well played final contest, the Phoenix downed the Selects winning 4-2 to capture the championship.  The Phoenix established an early 3-0 lead and held off a strong comeback attempt to capture the title.

Games 1-3 were played at the International Ice Centre in Romeoville, IL and the final was played at Addison Ice on Sunday at 11:30 AM.

CHARLIE TRAUDT (#19) had an outstanding tournament and was named the MVP.   

The tryout was attended by 96 players from 28 different high schools.  The 41 players on the two rosters will attend 18 different high schools in the fall.  Practices for both teams will begin on Monday, August 18th.  The rosters which are in printable form can be found in "Handouts" which is item #9 on the HOME PAGE menu.  

Following three very successful years of coaching the Kettle Moraine-Mukwonago high school hockey program, Chris Duncan and his assistant, Kevin Cline, have joined the PHOENIX HOCKEY coaching staff.  They will work with Peter Bakovic coaching the Midget Minor (16U) Team.

As the KMM Varsity Head Coach, Chris compiled an impressive 51-17-1 record.  In his tenure, his teams made two trips to the WIAA State Championship and won a Classic Eight Conference Championship.  Previously, the KMM hockey program had never won a conference championship or played in a state tournament.

Chris grew up and played hockey in Onalaska, WI, coached for five years in the Waukesha County Youth Hockey Association and has a Level 5 "Masters" coaching certification from USA Hockey.  In 2006, Chris was named the WIAA Section 7 "Coach of the Year".  We welcome Chris and Kevin to PHOENIX HOCKEY and are confident that they will make significant contributions to the development of the "committed" high school hockey players who participate in the program.

In a recent NHL Prospect list compliled by McKeen's hockey, Phoenix Force forward Gavin Hartzog was ranked #115 on the list of their "Top 125".  An interview with Gavin written by Max Giese of the McKeen's Hockey Prospect Staff, appears on the McKeen's Hockey website.  By clicking on the headline above, you can access that interview with Gavin.

The Central States Hockey League (CSHL) recently completed their 2008 entry draft.  Four (4) PHOENX FORCE players were selected by the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks and one (1) was selected by the Quad City Jr. Flames. 

Cleveland represented the CSHL in the 2007-2008 USA Hockey Tier III Junior A Tournament.  Players choosen by Cleveland are: forward BRANDON BAYER (Pius), forward ZACH BRANOVAN (Arrowhead), goalie JOSH LEHR and defenseman JAKE WILD (Beaver Dam).  Quad City selected forward ROBERT (R.J.) RICK.

During a recruiting visit to Madison on Thursday, May 29th, Phoenix Force forward Gavin Hartzog was offered a scholarship to play hockey for the University of Wisconsin Badgers.  Gavin will report to the USHL Fargo Force for development purposes prior to enrolling at UW to play hockey.

PHOENIX FORCE forward Gavin Hartzog (Marquette High) was selected in the 4th round of the USHL draft by the Fargo Force.  He was the 36th overall pick in the draft conducted on Wednesday, May 14th.  Jefferson Dahl (Eau Claire) and David Donnellan (Eau Claire) were the only other Wisconsin players selected prior to Gavin.

Based on his strong MVP performance at the Chicago Showcase on the senior TEAM WISCONSIN roster in April, Gavin has been presented with many higher level hockey opportunities.  Good luck and congratulations to Gavin and all of the other fine Wisconsin players selected in the USHL draft. 

With an impressive 5-2 Sunday AM victory over Team Minnesota, Team Wisconsin won the Chicago Showcase championship at Edge Ice in Bensenville, IL.  The team, with PHOENIX FORCE players Gavin Hartzog (Marquette) and Josh Lehr (Appleton) on the roster, finished the highly scouted tournament with a record of 5-0-1.  On the road to the final game Team Wisconsin defeated Missouri (11-1), Northern New England (4-0), Colorado (8-0), and Michigan (2-0).  The tie was vs. Michigan (2-2) who they defeated in a subsequent semi-final game. 

With his very strong showing and overall effort, forward Garvin Hartzog (7 goals and 1 assist) was named the Showcase MVP.  Josh "The Wall" Lehr shared the goalie duties with Brady Sand and recorded shutouts in all three of the games that he started.  Josh finished the tournament as the top rated goalie. 

Wisconsin's twenty (20) high school seniors playing on the Team Wisconsin roster should be very proud of what they accomplished in Bensenville. 

The Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association (WHCA) has announced the 2008 All-State Team.  There are 24 players (12 Forwards - 8 Defensemen - 4 Goalies) selected to the First Team.  Phoenix 18U players named to the First Team are senior forward GAVIN HARTZOG (Marquette High) and senior goalie JOSH LEHR (Appleton United).

Honorable Mention honors went to 16U player junior forward DEVIN STUERMER (Pius), 18U senior defenseman BRANDON BAYER (Pius) and 16U sophomore goalie MICHAEL PARDA (Waukesha).

All five (5) players should be very proud of their "well deserved" honors.  Congratulations from all of us at PHOENIX HOCKEY.     

Phoenix Force players JOSH LEHR (Appleton-Goalie) and GAVIN HARTZOG (Marquette-Forward) were selected to the CHICAGO SHOWCASE final Team Wisconsin roster following a rigorous tryout in Schofield this past weekend.  A total of 58 high school seniors were invited to the weekend tryout.  JOSH and GAVIN will attend a Team Wisconsin Training Camp in Madison (April 4-6) prior to playing in the Chicago Showcase which will be held in Bensenville, IL (April 16-20).  This is the 24th consecutive year for this prestigious event.

Five (5) Phoenix Seniors will make the trip to Schofield, WI the weekend of March 28-30 to compete for TEAM WISCONSIN - CHICAGO SHOWCASE roster positions.  The Chicago Showcase for the 20 players and alternates selected will be played in Bensenville, IL April 16-20, 2008.

Congratulations and good luck to the five Phoenix players invited to the tryout:  BRANDON BAYER (Pius - Defense), JAKE FUREY (Cedarburg - Forward), GAVIN HARTZOG (Marquette - Forward), JOSH LEHR (Appleton - Goalie), and R.J. RICK (Cedarburg - Forward).  

The Senior / Chicago Showcase Tournament will be held at the Waupun Community Center March 14-16, 2008.  The team rosters, schedules and specific information regarding the tournament can be found in "Handouts".  Phoenix players can be found on the Section 5, 7 and 8 rosters.

Players participating in the Waupun Tournament will be chosen, based on their performance, to participate in the 2008 Team Wisconsin Tryout Camp in Schofield, WI which will be held March 29-30, 2008.  From that tryout camp, 20 players and alternates will be selected to Team Wisconsin.  The Chicago Showcase will be played this year April 16-20, 2008 in Bensenville, IL.

The ALL-AREA BOYS HOCKEY TEAM, selected by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sports Staff, was announced in the paper this morning.  Phoenix players named to the first team were defenseman BRANDON BAYER (Pius), forward GAVIN HARTZOG (Marquette) and goalie MICHAEL PARDA (Waukesha).  Rounding out the first team were forwards Jeff Costello (Catholic Memorial) and Garrett Bassler (Germantown) along with defenseman Jack Wigdale (University School).  Named to the second team were Phoenix players DANNY MAURER (Marquette) and DEVIN STUERMER (PIUS).

Dale West of Cedarburg was selected Coach of the Year. 

Congratualtions to Midget Major players DANNY MAURER (Marquette High) and JAKE WILD (Beaver Dam).  Both have been recognized for exemplary character and sportsmanship as recipients of the 2008 High School Character Award which is sponsored by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation.

Deserving candidates are selected by their high school coach based on a number of factors that demonstrate "character", including: postive attitude, outstanding sportsmanship, excellent work ethic, unselfish team player, coachability, great role model and exemplary citizenship.

The Midget Major (18U) Team lost the CHAMPIONSHIP game on Sunday, April 1, 2007 to a very strong Michigan Jaguars team by a score of 2-1. The Jaguars won all six (6) of their tournament games. All of the games were played at Great Lakes Sports City (GLSC) in Fraser, MI. The five sheet facility is the home of the Belle Tire Hockey Club.
