HEAT 16 AND UNDER DEFEAT THE WOLVERINES TO WIN WISSAHICKON BOYS & GIRLS. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
The Philly Heat 16 and Under edged the Wolverines 51-45 to win the Wissahickon Boys and Girls Club Fall League championship. Philly sprinted to a 32-19 lead behind Khalief Trawick's 17 points half. They had to withstand a rally by the hosts.
With four minutes remaining, the Heat's big lead had dwindled to 42-41. Harold Hicks kept his team ahead by nailing a couple of three point buckets earlier in the second half. With the game on the line Brandon Wesley (12 points) scored two post buckets (one was a three point play) to give the Heat a 47-43 lead.
After a Wolverine score tightened the game, Marcus Grimes stole a pass and scored with 25 secomds remaining to put Philly up 49-45. D.L. Lawrence was fouled with seven seconds remaining and calmly hit his free throws to assure the title.
The Heat had defated Fisher Park 67-47 in the semi-finals. The win was more satisfying because Fisher Park handed the Heat their only defeat in regular season play. The scoring was supplied by Lawrence (15 points), Trawick (14 points), Grimes (10 points), Hicks (10 points)and Wesley (11 points). Antwan Miller led in rebounds and Marque Griffin was the steals leader.
