The Philly Heat "Black" fell in the championship game 67-55 to Basketbull, in the Columbus day Clash on the Court of the Hall of Fame in Springfield MA. It was their first official competition of the 2006-07 season. Basketbull are the official team of the H.O.F.
The road to the title game was not easy. In their opener, they squeezed by SHEN Basketball of New York, 54-49. After a tense contest, Marque' Griffin (17 points) made a lay-up to seal the win. Cardell Hellems added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Big contributions were made by Dawight Whitmore and Rahquil Norton.
Philly knew they had to defeat Brebeuf of Montreal Can. to advance to the finals. They edged the Canadians 61-56. Throughout most of the first half, that didn't look possible. after falling behind 19-8, they stepped up their defense and started to score easy hoops. The Heat came back to tie the game at halftime at 21 apiece, with Javez Reynolds (12 points) and Griffin leading the charge.
Brebeuf wouldn't quit, even re-taking the lead 50-49 with five minutes remaining. Here, D.J. Newbill (16 points), Hellems (14 points) and Thomas Smith (six points and four steals) took over. Nakeif Williams' lay-up with 10 seconds left sealed the trip to the Hall of Fame.
In the Final, the Heat fell to Basketbull's size and experience. The Springfield team has played together for over four years.
