HEAT 14-UNDER DEFEAT AAU JAGUARS 68-59, AND 26th ST.
The Heat's "White" team defeated the Penn Jaguars of the Middle Atlantic AAU 68-59, sending a message that they are on the rise in the Phila. area. Playing straight man to man defense, the Heat quieted the high scoring Jaguars through most of the third quarter. By the end of the period, the Jags were starting to figure out how to score, so Philly, neatly switched to a 2-3 zone to open the fourth quarter. They went on a 20-6 run to put the game away.
Brandon Wesley led the Heat with 17 points and had eight boards. Darren "DL" Lawrence added 15 points and seven steals. Octavious "Game" Booker tallied nine points and grabbed nine rebounds. Devante "DJ" Newbill scored eight points and had six rebounds. Harold Hicks tallied seven points and made six assists. Marque' Griffin added seven points, four assists and three steals.
Two days earlier, the Heat defeated a determined 26th Street squad 44-40, in their North Light League opener. Forward, Wesley blocked a shot with the Heat ahead 42-40 with four seconds remaining and Lawrence hit the clinching free throws to seal the win. Philly hit most of their free throws (6 for 7)in the final three minutes to secure the win.
Hicks scored 11 points, made five assists and grabbed six rebounds. Wesley tallied nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Lawrence scored eight points in his Heat debut.
