General Panet Scares Philly Heat In First Ever Meeting At Petawawa Canada Panther Classic
When seedings for the Panther Classic in Petawawa Canada are announced, the Philly Heat always are near the top of the board. This year, Tournament host General Panet was less experienced, so coach James Davis thought a match-up with mighty Philly might make his team better. What no one, maybe not even Davis dared think was that the Panthers could play with the Heat.
Not only can the Panthers "play with the Heat", they were within a few key fourth quarter plays of "defeating Philly". The biggest surprise of Panet's upset bid was their defense, which held Philly to 55 points (In their last two Classics, they averaged over 90 points), before falling 55-37. With just over six minutes remaining, the Panthers trailed by only nine points. A shot here a rebound there and a loose ball could have added up to one of the biggest upsets in Classic history.
The leading scorers for the Panthers were Brendan King (6'5"), who scored 17 points Adrian Jagoe (6'6"), who tallied 11 points, and Tristan Bruce (5'8"), who added 7 points and led his team in assists against the tough Philly press. The rebounders were King with 14 boards, Jagoe, who had 11 boards, and Greg Yandt (6'0"), with 6 boards. Philly's leaders were Andre Glover and Jaime Boyer, who scored 17 points each.
The Heat "Black" got all the way to the semi-finals before they went down hard, losing to St Joseph 72-57. The Heat made many comeback efforts in the fourth quarter, only to be buried because they were called for 36 fouls to St Joseph's 5 in the second half. That, and a gritty defensive effort turned a tight contest into a deceptively easy win for the Canadians. Philly was led by Glover, who was selected All Tournament. He scored 23 points. St Joseph was led by Andrew Legassick, who scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.
After the Heat survived the "Panther Scare", they defeated Centennial of Belville Ontario 65-46. Leading the way was Glover (22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), Boyer (12 points, 7 assists, 3 steals) and Nijel Robinson (10 pts.). Philly also defeated Bishop Marracco 83-65. Glover led the team, scoring 24 points, followed by Robinson's 18 points. Demetrius Landry added 16 points. Lawrence Williams had a "double-double", scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
All of Petawawa's favorite Philly players are doing well in college, led by Dionte Christmas, of Temple University in Philadelphia. (Temple is seen on ESPN and ESPN-2) Steve Hassell has signed an NCAA letter of intent to attend High Point University (get the telecasts of High Point's 2007 contests with Kentucky and North Carolina U. Hassell is projected a starter at shooting guard)
