LeAnna Washington and Philly Heat Team up for Education
Dawud Morris of the Philly Heat recently received a Certificate of Merit from State Representative LeAnna Washington. Morris, who graduated with honors from Philadelphia Regional High School, will be attending Lackawanna Community College in the Fall. Ms. Washington is a strong believer in the values of education for area youth. She is extremely proud of the work being done by the Heat and other neighborhood organizations. She has dedicated her administration to educational initiatives. Parents and students, who need the assistance of her office, can receive valuable information about educational programs, scholarships and loans.
Among Morris many basketball accomplishments is his entry into the Heats "2000 Point Club". He reached 2000 points faster than any Heat player and is the only player to amass 1000 career rebounds. He averaged 20.0 points in six games in Indianapolis Indiana at the Best of the Best National Tournament, leading the Heat to a National second place finish as he received National All Tournament Honors. Morris had 32 points in the title game win versus Toronto Canada, to bring his total to the 2129 point mark.
The Heat had five seniors on their National Final team and all of them are going to college in September. John Wes Davis, a Lincoln High School Grad, will be attending Mercyhurst Northeast (near Erie Pa.) . Davis is also a member of the Heats 2000 Point Club with 2202 points and is the career leader in assists with 800. John Stewart from Simon Gratz High School and Tony Davis, from Strawberry Mansion High School, will both be attending Salem Junior College. Stewart scored 1376 points in his Heat career. Rick Willoughby, a Dobbins High School grad, already is attending summer courses at Philadelphia Community College.
Morris and his Philly Heat teammates are to be commended for the hard work, both in the classroom and the basketball court, which brought about their opportunities. Ms. Washington encourages those, who are interested in education to visit her office at 1555 Wadsworth Avenue (near Cedarbrook Mall) in Philadelphia. Her telephone number is 215-242-0472.

The Philly Heat finished a "Strong" Runner=Up in the Best of the Best National Tourney, Held last weekend in Indinanopolis Indiana. They Fell to The Toronto (Canada) All stars 66-63 in OT in the National Title Game. Philly fought back from a 20 point defecate before losing in overtime.
6'6" Forward Dawud Morris was selected to the National's First Team All-Tournament, as he powered the Heat with 32 points and 17 rebounds. Morris will be attending Lackawana Community College in the Fall. LCC finished as Runners-Up in the Division II Junior Co;;ege Tourney in 2003. He averaged over 20 points and 15 rebounds in Indy and became the fastest Philly p[layer to reach 2000 points for his Heat career. Reggie Strickland netted 16 points and Rick Willoughby added 10 points.
HEAT "BLACK" EARN FIFTH PLACE in AYB NATIONAL FINAL
The Heat "Black" played well at the American Youth Basketball Nationals in Fort Wayne Indiana, where they had a 6-3 record for all their games, but lost in an "Elite Eight" game to the eventual champion the Cincinnati Red Storm 67-48. That left them with a fifth place finish, out of 64 teams, despite playing without two starters. Philly defended their East Coast supremacy in the Nationals with pride, defeated the runner-up S. E. Michigan Spirit 90-84 in the preliminary round, They played tough pool play games, including the Spirit, Rockford (Ill.) Wolfpack [a 66-63 win to avenge last years loss]. They won titles in Philly. Harrisburg and Camden N.J. and were 13-2 in East Coast Events.
The Heat opened the pool play round with an easy 78-41 win over the SE Ill. Rhinos. Strawberry Mansion's Dawud Morris set the tone for his All Star performance with a 22 point, 13 rebound effort. Ton Baker of Germantown High contributed 14 points. John Stewart of Gratz High School and Wesley Davis of Lincoln High School added 13 points each. Frankford High's Ty Reed had 10 more points in a balanced scoring effort.
Next up for the locals, was a return match versus the Rockford Ill. Wolfpack, who had destroyed them in their National opener a year ago. Philly avenged the loss with a 69-61 victory, which wasn't as close as the score indicated. Morris again led the team (which he wold often do) with 16 points, followed closely by Stewart's 13 markers. Davis, Reed and Baker each added 10 points.
The Eastern Michigan Lakers figured out how to stop the tourney leaders in scoring, but still came up short, as the Heat prevailed 54-49. The Magic led for most of the game by using a methodic offense and solid man-to-man defense. The Heat got away from them only once, during a five minute stretch late in the game, as the went on a 16-4 run to secure the contest. This was another win to avenge a loss in last year's tourney
The Heat were 3-0 after the first day of competition, but coach Jon Kinley was cautiously optimistic, "We expended a lot of energy today and we only have seven players. Two starters, Nick Martin and Steve Hasell (over 2000 career points) and a key sub, Rashad Mcghee (over 1200 career points) had other commitments. Everyone's playing great and trying to make up for them. I hope we have enough left for the playoffs."
Saline (Indiana) High School used the same formula, slow offense and tight defense which the Magic used, but it was the Heat who had a tough stretch late in the game, as they fell 66-61. Wesley Davis had his best effort in this game, as he scored a team high 19 points and had seven assists. Ty Reed added 16 points and 19 rebounds. Saline was able to control the Heat's other big scorers and that was the key to their win.
Philly got back on track with an entertaining 90-83 win versus the SE Michigan Spirit. The game was the highest scoring game in the tourney's 160 first round games. Morris scored a tourney high 24 points. Tony Baker and John Stewart each scored 16 points. Reed added 14 more tallies. Penn Charter's Hanif Hopkins had a big hand in getting the Heat running again, as he had seven assists, five steals and nine points. Though Davis had six assists, he suffered a knee injury, which would eventually force him to sit out the playoffs.
The Mid-Michigan Magic caught the Heat as they were tiring and were able to steal a 63-57 from Philly. Morris scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Stewart (15 points) and Reed (14 points) hsad solid contributions. The Magic were able to hold the high scoring Baker ( over 2200 career points) without a field goal to key their win.
The Heat were tiring as they played the Orion Ohio Pistons. They were able to pull out an ugly 53-48 win but Kinley was worried,"You stress to your players to play hard all the time, so how do you tell them to soften up here in the Nationals. We're real tired but we'll be ready for the finals".Morris led with 18 points and Reed added 13 points.
After getting a bye to the "Elite Eight" of thed finals, the Heat were matched up against the Cincinatti Red Storm. The Storm had knocked off two time champion Romeo Dawgs in overtime. Philly reached back for a little extra as they stayed even with the Poewerful Storm until halftime. They trailed by only 25-23. Cincanitti went on a 20-5 run against the tired Heat in the second half and were hoping to conserveve energy themselves. The Heat, behind Stewart (20 points) and Reed (13 points) had one last gasp, as they closed the defecit to 52-43 with four minutes remaining. That was as close as they would get. Big factors in the loss were Davis, who's knee kept him out of action and the Storm's ability to keep Morris from scoring areas and off the offensive boards. They also used a variety of bigger players to hold Baker to only seven points.
The Heat would get some satisfaction as the Red Storm went on to defeat the Spirit a for their first AYB National Championship. Philly also recieved highlight performances from their three selections in the All Star Game, as their team (Americans) won 86-82 in front of a sellout throng of 1200 people. Dawud Morris scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and performed the dunk of the game, when he drove the lane, threw the ball off the backboard and caught it for a thunder slam, similar to NBA star Tracy McGrady. John Stewart had 24 more points and three crowd pleasing dunks. Tony Baker had a game high 11 assists, as he fed his teammates for many of their points.
