PETALUMA LACROSSE: Facts & Questions
Q. How old does my child have to be to play in the 2010 Season?
A. BOYS (1st thru 8th grade), GIRLS (1st thru 8th grade)
Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association (NCJLA) division includes:
Bantams U-9 Boys/Girls** (Must have a 2001 birth year or younger, and be 7 or 8 by 12/31/09)
Lightning U-11 Boys/Girls (Must have a 1999 birth year or younger, and be 9 or 10 by 12/31/09)
Juniors U-13 Boy/Girls (Must have a 1997 birth year or younger, and be 11 or 12 by 12/31/09)
Seniors U-15 Boys/Girls (Must have a 1995 birth year or younger, and be 13 or 14 by 12/31/09)
U-9 Girls** Registration is tennative, we must have 10 to field a team, have a parent to coach, and must be by November 30th, 2009.
Q. What is the cost for the 2009 season?
Youth Registration is $250 (includes: US Lacrosse membership)
Lacrosse gear and Uniforms are NOT included.
Q. Do I get a sibling discount regardless of the ages of my children?
A. Yes, a $25 discount is given. (With a Promotional Code given by Registrar (Excludes U-9 Boys/Girls Categories)
Q. Are there any other costs?
A. YES, a Uniform is an additional $65, and Lacrosse gear can be purchased at a local Sports store or on-line.
Lacrosse gear: (Safety Equipment) costs vary by vendor packages and differ on boys and girls requirements. (Estimate: Boys gear cost $200, Girls gear cost $75)
Uniforms: Girls Jersey $30, Girls Kilt $35, Boys Jersey $35, Boys shorts$30 for sizes and jersey number. Uniforms can be purchased on line at the time of registration.
Q. How do I register?

Q. If my child wants to buy a stick, what should I buy?
A. A "short " stick 37 - 42 inch is what most players play use
The Rule Book says:
A "short" stick is 37 - 42 inches.
A "long" stick (defense) is 52 - 72 inches. (4 on the field maximum)
A "goalie" stick is 40 - 72 inches.
NCJLA Rules add:
Short sticks may be as short as 37 inches for Pups and Pee Wees.
Pups teams may use long poles.
No long sticks (defense) in Pee Wees.
Q. What equipment is needed?
A1. Boys require a lacrosse stick, helmet, shoulder/rib pads, arm pads, gloves, mouthpiece, cup, and cleats (soccer or football only - no metal baseball cleats). Cost typically runs $200-$250.
A2. Girls require a lacrosse stick, eye guards (goggles), mouthpiece and cleats (soccer). The Cascade Iris or STX goggle are the most popular. Gloves are optional. Cost will range from $70 - $120. A girls lacrosse stick is different from a boys. It does not have a pocket.
Q. What are the team colors?
A. PETALUMA RIVER CATS are Black, red and white. Cascade CLH2 silver helmet with red visor and red chin piece.
Q. Uniforms?
A1. Boys - jersey and shorts (black jersey/red shorts)
A2. Girls - Red and white jersey with a black wrap pleated kilt)
Q. Is there contact?
A1. Boys lacrosse is a contact sport U-13 thru High School.
A1. Girls lacrosse is not a contact sport.
Boys in 6th grade and below play with minimal physical contact. The focus is on developing their lacrosse skills. From 7th grade and older, physical contact is allowed and is taught by coaches appropriately. Injury level is the same as soccer.
Q. Kick Off Meeting?
A. That will be at the discrection of the coach and team parent for each individual team.
Q. Pre-Season Clinic?
A. Fall clinics are scheduled to begin in November of 2009. Please check our web-site for details.
Q. How many practices and games will there be?
A. Practices will occur a minimum of two days per week. Practices and schedules will be set by coaches in conjunction with field availability. In early pre-season, practices may be three days a week. Petaluma Lacrosse encourages and expects coaches to allow all players that practice to play at least 50% of their games.
Q. Are there any dates that we should set aside?
A. February 5, 2010 OPENING FACE-OFF!
Q. Do you offer Financial Assistance?
There is a process in which financial assistance is reviewed and approved. There is specific critera. Nothing is guaranteed! We will do our best to help players in need. Contact our registrar if you are looking for assistance.
Q. How can I help?
A. It is required that All participating families must assist the team in some capacity. There are many opportunities to assist. At the time of registration there is a series of duties to select from (Example: fundraising, team parent, assistant coach, field coordinator, equipment manager, first aid director, etc.)
Q. Coaches?
A. We have volunteer positions at this time. High School teams will require paid positions and these costs will be incurred by the players and their families at the high school level.
