Peninsula Little League: Welcome
** IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION RE 2014 REGISTRATION FOR ALL PLAYERS **
To all our valued Peninsula Little League players, families, and supporters:
On Thursday January 16th, 2014, per the terms of the League Constitution, an announced general public meeting was held with the purpose of presenting to the community two options that were under consideration by the board as to the future of the League going forward. The League President summarized the current state of the League's membership and finances and how the board had evaluated present circumstances and the pros and cons of the two options with the goal of providing a quality baseball/softball experience to every child in the League boundary.
After a period of public comment, the board then took a vote with the decision being made to dissolve the current league boundaries and to begin the immediate allocation of the PLL players to three adjacent Leagues for play in 2014 and beyond. Please note that this decision as well as other alternatives were greatly debated and carefully researched over the past few weeks as board members worked diligently to find the best option that best supported our childrens' experience in baseball and softball. This was not a decision made lightly, but a decision made looking towards the future. The board is committed to helping every family in this transition process.

** COMMENTS BY THE LEAGUE PRESIDENT FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC MEETING **
In the meeting of January 16th, the League President summarized the current state of the league as follows:
"The Peninsula League is the second smallest among Portland Leagues but would likely be the smallest in the 2014 season.Peninsula would be approximately 120 players with the surrounding merged leagues being 300-550. We can not compete with these giant leagues except possibly at the T-ball levels. A league needs 6 or more teams to viably play within its own borders. Last year we had age groups comprised of 1, 1, 1, 5, and 7 teams with the larger numbers at the lowest age groups: 4-7 year olds. The number of volunteers has dwindled over the last decade to where there are only about a dozen persons involved with the League at the present time.
“Finances had come up short in 2013 and will continue as such in 2014 so the League would operate at a deficit which it cannot do. A rather large infusion of cash from donors and sponsors is needed and it is not forseen that that will happen as contributions have fallen drastically over the past several years. All of us are solely interested in providing a quality baseball and softball experience for all interested players as well as the community we serve. That means quality players, uniforms, and equipment as well as excellent coaches and volunteers.
“Two choices and only two choices are available to us at this time. One is to continue as we are, providing baseball and softball to a limited number of teams in 2014. Presently we have several age groups which do not have a sufficient number of teams to provide a league experience. In 3 of the 5 age groups, we have only one team. This requires the difficulty of scheduling games, as possible, with adjoining and remote leagues. Many games would have to be played at distant fields.
“The other choice is to dissolve the League as presently constituted and align the players with the nearest adjoining or adjacent league. This provides league games, a quality experiences, and games considerably closer to home. New boundaries have been established for the disbursement of players to the three leagues that border the present PLL. Players would be joining Interstate-Kenton for those living or attending school on our West boundary, players on the southern portion of our present boundary would play in the Hollywood-Rose City League, and those on the eastern portion would be assigned to and play in Wilshire-Riverside.
“Each player would have to register directly with the league they are eligible to play in, either through the website of that league or by other means, and will be subject to the fees, tryouts (for Minors and above), and deadlines for that league. New Little League International rules allow players to register with the League where their school is located -or- in the league encompassed by their legal residence. This means some players may have two Leagues in which they are eligible to play. Assistance through this process will be provided by the PLL Player Agent as well as other board members. Players will try out (for Minors and above) with new teams and new leagues to establish balanced and fair teams. In this way, competition and the player experience will be enhanced for all.”
