Project 20
The Pekin Pride Soccer Club is expanding and looking for girls who want to have fun learning the fundamentals of soccer. The new program is called Project 20 and it's for girls U6 (August 1, 2007 to July 1, 2008) and U7 (August 1, 2006 - July 31, 2007).  It's the club's response to parents looking to get their kids involved earlier than U9, which is the youngest age group for competitive soccer int he region.

"We're looking for 20 girls (in each age group) who love soccer, who want to learn the game and the basics without having to play against kids two years older than they are.  The focus is on footwork, communication and decision making at a very basic level."

Pekin Pride has had solid success on the club scene.  Their first girls team ('93-'94) took first or second in nearly two dozen tournaments across the midwest and went on to lead Pekin High School to five straight winning seasons.  More recently the first Pride boys team ('00-'01) has taken first or second in nearly a dozen tournaments.  The '01-'03 girls team won three of four tournaments it entered this past fall.

"We don't want to turn anyone away, but what we're trying to avoid is girls whose parents insist 'they'll be fine playing U9s', then try it, get frustrated and then don't want to play, when if they had just waited a year until U8 to play competitive soccer, they'd love it."
Sandoval will run training for this first group this spring and then pass it on to an experienced coach to start games in the fall.  PCHS boys assistant coach Gus Kormah will be the first to benefit from Project 20, as he has agreed to coach the Pekin Pride '06-'07 girls.

Interested girls are invited to attend an introductory session, which will run from 6:45 to 7:15 at the Avanti's Dome.  Registration starts at 6:30.  Information about the program, which will start April 3rd will be available that night.  Boys will also be allowed to participate this spring and if there is enough interest, the club will expand to include a boys program in the fall.
