Kelly moved to the United States from England in 1997 to attend Seton Hall University on a soccer scholarship. She grew up in Northwest London, and played for Pinner Park, Wembley and Arsenal before coming to the United States. She was one of the greatest athletes in Seton Hall sports history, taking the soccer team to a new level and, with 76 goals in 51 matches, won the national player of the year award: the Hermann Trophy. She was quickly recruited by WUSA and was considered as one of the league's best players, although she was beset by injuries in recent years. After WUSA collapsed, Smith played for the New Jersey Wildcats in the W-League. She is considered by many as the best player in England. Her forced absence from the National Team because of injuries left an obvious gap in its attacking and finishing ability. The Arsenal club is already a strong contender for three domestic trophies, plus a place in the UEFA Champions Cup semi-finals. Smith will link up there with Scottish International Julie Fleeting, another ex-WUSA player. Angela Banks is returning also. The next six months promises to be an exciting time for club, country, and fans.
U.S. Soccer Federation Statement on Head Injuries in Soccer and Padded Headgear
An emergency issue in the world of soccer is the use of padded headgear by players to prevent concussions. There have been a number of conflicting claims and reports about the medical benefits and risks of this headgear, and USSF has received a number of inquiries from its members about whether use of headgear is either appropriate or recommended. Soccer Headgear: Does it Help?
The U.S. Soccer Federation recently issued a report ( reprinted below), finding no evidence that wearing headgear is beneficial to players. There is a New York Times article link on this site which addresses the pros and cons of this issue. Click on the photo or headline above to read the complete New York Times article.
