PV 11s Win Nevada LL State Championship

PVLL 11U All-Stars beat Washoe LL last night, 13-8 to win the Nevada LL State Tournament.  In an winner take all championship game PV faced a solid and scrappy Washoe team.  The visitors from District 1 took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first keyed by a first pitch double off of starter Jacob Klein.  Klein settled down and struck out two of the next three Washoe hitters to retire the side.  Sterling Saltz got PV off and running with a lead-off single, Klein doubled to right-field and back to back singles by Trevor Mullaney and Justin Lutes helped PV to a 5-1 lead after one.

A big offensive lift for PV came when Klein and Mullaney hit back-to-back solo home runs in a 4-run inning that chased Washoe starter Jack Dailey and gave PV a 10-4 lead going into the 5th.  Klein threw his second excellent game of the state tournament by mixing his pitches well with solid control but eventually ran high on his pitch count and had to leave the game after 4 1/3 innings with a runner on and leading 10-5.  Klein finished the night striking out 8, scattered 7 hits and was aided by a soild catching job from Alec Sainz.  Jack Weisenburger then came into pitch and allowed 2 hits before settling down and getting Washoe's ever-dangerous lead-off hitter Travis Bohall to ground out to 2B to end the inning.  PV took a 10-8 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning and promptly scored 3 more insurance runs paced by a Mullaney double and a 2-out, infield hit by Weisenburger that plated Lutes, who had walked.  Weisenburger went out in the top of the 6th and retired Washoe's 2,3 & 4 hitters in order by striking out the first two and getting a comebacker to end the game and preserve the 13-8 victory.  PV, averaging 13.5 runs per game throughout it's all-star run, was paced by a balanced hitting attack in the championship game with eight different players tallying hits.  Leading the offensive attack were PV's 1-4 hitters - Saltz, Klein, Mullaney and Lutes who combined for 10 hits, 10 runs and 7 rbi. Also collecting hits were Sainz, Weisenburger, Dane Wasden and Joey Burrola.  Making important contributions to the championship run were Jake Collins, Blake Borror, Spencer Cofer, Dylan Humphires and Robby "Wheels" Schwartz.

The team and coaching staff wish to salute a very good and respected Washoe team.  Our thanks to District 4 LL and Lone Mountain Little League for hosting an outstanding state tournament.  Finally, a special thanks to all family members, friends, PVLL officials and fellow PVLL players and coaches, past and present, who came out to Children's Memorial Park and supported us.  Thank you & Go PV!

LITTLE LEAGUE: Paseo Verde takes title
Local team of 9- and 10-year-olds makes its first trip to state tournament
By KEVIN STOTT
VIEW STAFF WRITER

The Paseo Verde Little League 9- and 10-year-old team recently won the District 2 All-Star Tournament at Dos Escuelas Park in Henderson to qualify for the state tournament in Yerrington.
The team of all-stars came out of the loser's bracket to win the two-week, 15-team, double-elimination regional tournament and racked up a 7-1 record during its run. Paseo Verde defeated Green Valley two straight times to earn the berth to state.
After edging Green Valley by one run to force the decisive title game, Paseo Verde jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Joey Gallo and Gavin Kelly scored runs.
Green Valley's all-stars scored a run in the top of the third to cut Paseo Verde's lead to just one run.
Paseo Verde answered in its half of the third. After Gallo doubled, Jacob Findlay blasted a two-run home run to give Paseo Verde a 4-1 lead.
Pitcher A.J. McInerney, who pitched a complete game, allowed just one more run in the sixth inning and Paseo Verde captured its first regional championship in just its fifth year of existence.
"We were the first team ever from Paseo to win District," said manager Ed VanMeetren. "Green Valley was champion of the winner's bracket going into our first meeting with them. They were in the driver's seat."
In the Nevada District 2 section's 9- and 10-year-old state championships, Paseo Verde didn't fare as well, getting shut out in its first game to Red Rock, 11-0, and then falling to Reno, 4-2, in its second game.
VanMeetren saw a problem in the team's travel plans.
"We traveled the same day we played," he said. "After driving up to Yerrington, the kids were just tired. The kids and their parents got up at four in the morning that day. The kids don't know how their bodies are going to react to everything. At their age, if they don't have enough rest, they just crash mentally. Red Rock's team got up there the day before."
Other members of the Paseo Verde all-star squad that helped the team advance to state were Sergio Castrejon, Dylan Chavez, Dillon Fahr, Rocky Finley, Chris Johnson, Gage Shaw, A.J. VanMeetren and Brandon VanStone.
Assisting VanMeetren in coaching duties were Randy Chavez and Jim Kelly.
Paseo Verde Little League President Julie Grenier was ecstatic at the team's performance at regionals.
"It was great for our team," Grenier said. "We were thought of as the underdogs and had to come out of the loser's bracket and beat Green Valley twice to get to state."
The 11- and 12-year-old all-star team also did the league proud, going 4-2 in the state tournament with two wins against Moapa Valley, a win against Las Vegas Central and a win over Henderson. The team, coached by Kenny Green, lost to Legacy, 6-2, in the elimination bracket semifinals.
Green Valley, a perennial fixture at state, won the tournament to advance to the Western Regional Tournament in San Bernardino, Calif., by thrashing Legacy, 17-3, in the District 2 championship game. Green Valley outscored its opponents 60-7 in its four wins.
Paseo Verde's 11- and 12-year-olds, who didn't face Green Valley in the tourney, also did some dominating, outscoring their opponents 47-17 at the state tournament.
