Zaleski gets 300th career win at Parsippany
By Sandy Seegers • Daily Record • April 8, 2008
SUMMIT -- Parsippany 8, Summit 3
Each time the possibility of Dave Zaleski getting his 300th win came up, the veteran coach went silent. Zaleski, who has guided the Parsippany High School softball program since 1985, didn't want to hear about it and certainly didn't want to discuss it. "He wouldn't talk about it," Red Hawks junior catcher Jen Nista said. "If it got mentioned, he got kind of annoyed. He seemed mad that something was said about it at our pep rally."
Monday night, a little before 6 p.m., Zaleski's attitude toward the milestone changed. It was altered because No. 300, attained with an 8-3 victory over Summit at Memorial Field, was in the book. Zaleski smiled and hugged his players. He received two plaques, one from the school and one from his team. He also received a Parsippany jersey with "300" on it, a memento for the showcase. "It's a nice accomplishment," Zaleski said. "I'm happy. Coaching has always has been a big part of my life. Since I began coaching the girls in 1985, I didn't want to do anything else." According to Zaleski, there were several reasons why he didn't want to make a big deal about his upcoming achievement. "I didn't want there to be pressure on the kids," he said. "I also didn't want Summit to find out (it was approaching)." Of course, the foremost reason was because Zaleski didn't want to draw attention to himself. "It's really about the kids," he said.
The Red Hawks (3-0) did all they could to ensure that Zaleski got the victory. There were superb catches in the outfield by Kelsey Principe and Courtney Ford. Parsippany rapped out 11 hits, including a two-run homer by Nista in the top of the sixth inning. Nista, who homered to center field, was simply pleased to help. "I'm really happy for our coach," Nista said. "He deserves it. "He's very dedicated. I know he wanted this." Parsippany gained a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Chrissy Deleasa's RBI double and an error. In the lower half of the second, Principe made a running catch of a long ball hit to right-center field by the first Summit batter. "I saw the ball go to right field," Principe said. "I reached as far as I could. I was a little surprised that I caught it. Whatever I could do to help the team win. ..." The Red Hawks widened it to 4-0 on a miscue and a Deleasa RBI single in the fourth. Ford's catch came in the bottom of the fourth. She ran into the gap in left-center field and, being left-handed, made a back-handed catch to deprive a Summit hitter of an extra base hit. With Parsippany ahead, 5-0, Summit struck for three runs in the fifth inning. Zaleski then changed pitchers, removing sophomore Brianna Rossi and replacing her with classmate Brittany Serrao . Serrao got a strikeout and groundout to get the Red Hawks (3-0) out of the inning. Rossi allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one during her 41/3-inning stint. Serrao fanned five in her 22/3 innings in the circle. Nista ended with two hits as did Deleasa, Rossi and Principe . Principe was glad to contribute and be part of Zaleski's 300th. Zaleski is the first Parsippany High School coach to have that many wins in one sport. "He's a great coach," Principe said. "I'm glad he got it. I try to take up on what he says when I make a mistake." The highlight of Zaleski's career, no doubt, was when Parsippany claimed a state title in 1986. "I went to the top of the mountain with my second team," Zaleski said. "I've also had teams that have been lower. All along, I've had good kids. They won the games." Records: Parsippany 3-0. Summit 0-3

Nista scored when Brittany Serrao followed her with a single for a 2 to 0 lead. Mendham went back up by 1 in the 3rd but we came right back in the 4th when Courtney reached on a walk and moved up on a SAC bunt by Principe with Deleasa delivering with her 2nd RBI single of the day. In the 5th, the Red Hawks went up 1 when Briana Rossi hit a triple to left and Noelle Grande followed with an RBI double to center. Mendham wouldn’t give up as they tied it in the 6th after we opened the door with an error. Neither team broke the dead lock in the 7th so we went to extra innings. Courtney Ford led off with a double and Principe moved her to 3rd with a SAC bunt. With a suicide squeeze on, Deleasa laid down a perfect push bunt passed the charging 1st baseman to score Ford for a 1 run lead. In the bottom of the 8th, we gave Mendham a lead off base runner on an error and Coach Z elected to bring in Brittany Serrao in relief of Rossi to try and throw their hitters off. And it worked as she got the next 3 batters, 2 on come backers to the mound and a strike out. The final result a well earned 4 to 3 victory proving that we can beat most anybody. Wednesday, April 23
REDHAWKS 1 Morris Hills 0
The team seeded #16 in the MCT was looking to prove that they are better than #12 seed Morris Hills who they already beat earlier in the season. And that is what they did taking them down 1 to 0. After escaping a bases loaded no outs situation in the 3rd, they threatened in the 4 when Jen Nista and Brittany Serrao got on with back to back walks and Kelsey Principe singled. Nista was called out stealing but it sure looked like she was safe and then Christina Delease dropped a spinner in the dirt in front of the 2nd baseman and she clearly beat the throw but the umpire called her out negating the run. MH tried to get something going in the 6th with a lead off single but Noelle Grande pulled off a double play on a fly out to center alertly catching the runner at second leaning the wrong way. With 2 outs in the 6th Nista singled, stole 2nd and scored when Serrao reached on an error. Principe followed with a walk but Deleasa was out on a long fly ball to right. Rossi set them down in order in the 7th and the victory was sealed. Briana Rossi went the distance allowing 4 hits, 1 HBP and 5 K’s. Hanover Park came right back and tied it with 3 hits. Kelsey Principe made an excellent play cutting off a hard hit ball in the right center gap on 1 bounce, turning and throwing a strike to home to cut down the runner and end the inning. HP took the lead in the 4th on 2 hits. The Hawks were able to tie it back up in the 6th on singles by Serrao and DeFilippo. In the top of the 7th Mina Ra led off and reached safely when she pushed a ball between 1st and 2nd and both fielders yielded to the other watching the ball roll into the outfield but we couldn’t move her after that. Hanover Park opened the bottom of the 7th with back to back singles that just found the hole and then we intentionally walked the next batter to set up the force at home which didn’t matter as we walked in the winning run. The record stands at 5 Wins and 5 Losses.
Wednesday, April 16
Chatham 6 REDHAWKS 5 (8)
The team went up against a very tough Chatham squad taking them into extra innings before losing 6 to 5. Looking across all the key stats, it was a pretty even match up with the margin of victory going to the team with the least number of errors. They added another run in the 5th and we were threatening in the 7th with 2 out, Rossi singled and Jen Nista followed with a shot to deep center just off the glove of the streaking fielder. Rossi was waved home and cut down at the plate on a perfect relay from the shortstop ending the chance of another comeback. Monday, April 14
REDHAWKS 4 West Essex 3
The Red Hawks played another close game and as in the past, it came down to errors. However, this time the outcome was different as we sent West Essex home with their 1st conference loss of the season by the score of 4 to 3. West Essex scored 2 in the 3rd on a walk and 3 singles. We got 1 run back in the 4th on a walk and a single by Sam Payerl with a throwing error. In the 6th it was our turn to be generous and gave a run back on 2 errors and a single. It would have been 2 runs if not for a great throw from Noelle Grande in center that Brittany Serrao alertly relayed home to cut down a runner at the plate. After Brittany Serrao put West Essex down 1, 2, 3 in the top of the 7th, the stage was set for us to complete the comeback. Noelle Grande led off the bottom of the 7th and forced a throwing error on her bunt. Courtney Ford followed with a single to put 2 on and Briana Rossi put runners on 1st and 3rd when she hit into a fielders choice erasing Ford at 2nd.
