OVERALL RECORD: 19-8, IHC HILLS RECORD: 13-5
MORRIS HILLS 6, PARSIPPANY 1
Sloppy play in the field led to an opening day loss to the highly-regarded Scarlet Knights. PHS scored its only run when Julie Gola singled in Gabi Moreira. Gola had two of the Red Hawks' four hits off Kim Stoia, who allowed her first run in three starts. Kaitlin Flanagan had a double. Kristy Rubino scattered six hits in the loss.
PARSIPPANY 10, PARSIPPANY HILLS 0
Kristy Rubino threw the second no-hitter of her career as the Red Hawks bounced back from their opening day loss with a five-inning victory over the Vikings. A seven-run first inning, highlighted by Crystian Merrill's bases-loaded double, got things going against Julie Buechner. Stephanie Ziemski led the attack with a pair of doubles and Jamie Schneider went 2-for-3. Mimi Ra saved the no-hitter by throwing out a runner on a grounder into right.
PARSIPPANY 4, MORRISTOWN 3
The Red Hawks completed a morning-afternoon sweep by holding off the Colonials behind Kristy Rubino's 12-strikeout performance in a rain-soaked game. Julie Gola went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored the crucial insurance run in the top of the seventh on a two-out single by Crystian Merrill. The other Parsippany runs came on three straight bunts by Stephanie Ziemski, Gabi Moreira and Dana Romano. The game ended when Rubino got the last hitter to ground to Gola with the bases load in the seventh.
PARSIPPANY 9, SUMMIT 8
The Red Hawks, down by two in the top of the seventh, rallied for four runs and held on for a nervous victory over the winless Hilltoppers. Freshman Kim Rubino was the star, coming over from the JV game to relieve her sister Kristy and Julie Gola on the mound and earn her first varsity victory.
Jamie Schneider led off the seventh-inning rally with a bunt single. Singles by Crystian Merrill and Gabi Moreira keyed the comeback. The game, played in a steady rain, ended when Gola knocked down a hot liner at first after Summit had closed to within one run.
PARSIPPANY 1, MENDHAM 0
Kristy Rubino threw her second no-hitter of the season and the second of her career against Mendham as the home-standing Red Hawks rolled to their fourth straight victory. The junior also singled in Jamie Schneider for the game's only run. Schneider legged out an infield single leading off the third inning and stole second, scoring when Rubino lashed a hit past the third baseman and through the leftfielder. Rubino struck out 11 and walked four. Parsippany collected six hits off southpaw screwballer Claire Kenny. Rubino also no-hit the Lady Minutemen, 1-0, last year, before beating them with a three-hitter in the rematch.
PARSIPPANY 14, WEEQUAHIC 0
Crystian Merrill threw a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Dana Romano had a three-run homer and Julie Gola had a three-run triple as Parsippany batted around in the first inning.
PARSIPPANY 14, WEEQUAHIC 0
Freshman Kim Rubino threw a no-hitter at the Indians in the second game of a doubleheader at Weequahic Park. She and her sister, Kristy, both doubled in the onslaught. Rubino fanned 14.
MORRIS CATHOLIC 9, PARSIPPANY 4
The Crusaders rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh and stopped Parsippany's winning streak in a night game at Smith Field. The Red Hawks played sloppy ball in the field but seemingly had the game in hand after a four-run sixth gave them a 4-3 lead. Julie Gola, who extended her hitting streak to seven games with a pair of hits, got the rally started with a long double to left. Kristy Rubino struck out 15 Morris Catholic hitters. Centerfielder Dana Romano turned in the defensive gem of the game with a diving catch.
PARSIPPANY 5, WEST ESSEX 1
Kristy Rubino threw a three-hitter and Parsippany made the most of its three hits to beat the Lady Knights. It was the Red Hawks' first win at West Essex in over six years. Rubino and Crystian Merrill had RBI singles and Jamie Schneider and Dana Romano also drove in runs. Rubino struck out seven.
DOVER 6, PARSIPPANY 4
Plagued once again by mistakes and a lack of timely hitting, the Red Hawks' recent dominance over Dover came to a sudden halt when the Tigers scored twice in the top of the eighth. The Red Hawks threatened in the bottom of the inning after a double by Dana Romano and a single by Kelly Young but failed to score. Kristy Rubino's two-run homer in the fourth had given the Red Hawks a 4-2 lead. Rubino and Jamie Schneider had two hits each.
PARSIPPANY 7, MOUNT OLIVE 2
Crystian Merrill's three-hit day sparked a 13-hit explosion to back the three-hit pitching of Kristy Rubino as the Red Hawks took back second place in the IHC Hills. Rubino pitched around five errors but the Red Hawks scored early and were never threatened. Dana Romano, Gabi Moreira and Jamie Schneider had two hits each and Stephanie Ziemski had an RBI double. Rubino fanned seven.
PARSIPPANY 3, BOONTON 1
Kaitlin Flanagan singled in Kristy Rubino and Crystian Merrill to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth and the Red Hawks went on to defeat a much-improved Boonton team. Rubino went the distance in a two-hit, nine-strikeout performance. Merrill had the Red Hawks' earlier RBI, knocking in Jamie Schneider. Dana Romano made another diving catch in centerfield to help quell a Bombers' threat in the seventh.
PARSIPPANY 19, PARSIPPANY HILLS 0
Dana Romano went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and six RBI to lead the Red Hawks to a five-inning win over their sister school. Kristy Rubino's bid for a second no-hitter against the Vikings was broken up by Lara Hirshenson with one out in the fifth. Every batter in Parsippany's starting lineup had at least one hit.
MORRIS HILLS 6, PARSIPPANY 0
Kaitlin Flanagan and Kelly Young had the only hits against Kim Stoia as the Red Hawks' chances for a conferenece title were ruined. The Knights scored two runs on a bases-loaded walk and a double steal before Shauna Gallagher tripled home two more in the fourth. They tacked on an unearned run in the fifth and scored in the sixth during a rundown play.
PARSIPPANY 1, HANOVER PARK 0
Kristy Rubino out-dueled Katie Vecchione, throwing a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and making a first-inning run stand up for the victory. The Red Hawks got only two hits off Vecchione and her defense but used one of them to score the game's only run. Jamie Schneider led off the game by lashing a single into right, stole scond, moved to third on Julie Gola's sacrifice bunt and scored on Crystian Merrill's sacrifice fly. Rubino, who had the other PHS hit, a double, got out of a fifth-inning jam by striking out two Hornets with runners at second and third.
PARSIPPANY 3, DOVER 1
The Red Hawks avenged an earlier loss to Dover behind Kristy Rubino's one-hit, 16-strikeout performance. Rubino also scored the go-ahead run in the sixth when she doubled with two outs and came in on her cousin Kelly Young's single. Parsippany took a 1-0 lead when Jamie Schneider singled, was bunted to second by Julie Gola, went to third on Crystian Merrill's single and scored on Kaitlin Flanagan's sacrifice fly. Paige Berger scored an insurance run in the seventh on Schneider's RBI grounder.
PARSIPPANY 2, MENDHAM 1
Kristy Rubino threw one-hit ball for 11 innings and the Red Hawks managed to beat the Lady Minutemen to sweep the season series. Rubino, who no-hit Mendham earlier in the year, struck out 16. The Red Hawks, scoring just one unearned run, squandered early chances and allowed Claire Kenny to settle down. They took the lead in the 11th when Kaitlin Flanagan opened with a single and pinch runner Carrie Whalen stole second. Flanagan returned to second and scored when Rubino beat out a bunt and the throw went into right field. Mendham's only run scored on Parsippany's only error of the game. Otherwise, the Red Hawks were solid in support of Rubino.
PARSIPPANY 11, BOONTON 0
Kristy Rubino threw her third no-hitter of the year as the Red Hawks opened the Morris County Tournament with a preliminary round win over the Bombers. Rubino struck out 13 and walked one in a game halted after five innings. She was also 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI, joining Crystian Merrill (3-for-3 and a sac fly) and Kaitlin Flanagan (2-for-3, triple) as offensive stars.
PARSIPPANY 2, ROXBURY 0
The Red Hawks won their first round Morris County Tournament game at the home of the eighth-seeded Gaels. Kristy Rubino scattered five hits, struck out 12 and didn't walk a batter in pitching another shutout. Parsippany got all the runs it needed in the third when Kaitlin Flanagan doubled in Julie Gola and Crystian Merrill. The Red Hawks left the bases loaded in the sixth. Rubino worked out of a one-out, runner on third situation in the sixth with two strikeouts and then ended the game by fanning the last batter with runners on first and second in the seventh.
MOUNT OLIVE 4, PARSIPPANY 3
The Red Hawks squandered a 3-0 first-inning lead and lost when the Marauders pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth. RBI hits by Crystian Merrill and Kaitlin Flanagan plus a double steal provided Parsippany with its early advantage but the Red Hawks let Mount Olive back in the game, yielding three runs on two infield throwing errors. The Marauders' defense made play after play against a PHS team that didn't strike out all day until MO won the game on a single into right off reliever Kim Rubino. PHS wasted scoring opportunities and left runners on second and third in two of the last three innings.
PARSIPPANY 5, MORRIS HILLS 0
Parsippany put itself in the MCT semfinals for the first time since 1986 in a stirring victory over the top-seeded Scarlet Knights. The Red Hawks made up for two regular season losses to Morris Hills behind gutsy shutout pitching by Kristy Rubino and a clutch bases-double by DH Kelly Young. Rubino struck out eight, allowed nine hits and stranded 14 runners as she constantly dug down to work out of trouble. Young's three-run double was part of a four-run sixth off Kim Stoia, who had allowed only six runs all season. Julie Gola got the inning started with an infield single and after Crystian Merrill reached on an error, Rubino was walked intentionally. Young picked on the first pitch and roped it over the leftfielder's head. She scored on a single by freshman Kim Rubino, her cousin. Parsippany had taken a 1-0 lead when Dana Romano singled and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Gabi Moreira. Rubino's biggest escape act ocurred in the fifth when with the bases-loaded and one out, she got a double play on a lineout to Moreira at second.
PARSIPPANY 9, SUMMIT 1
Kristy Rubino threw a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts and helped her own cause with a pair of RBI on a double. Kaitlin Flanagan doubled twice, knocking in a pair of runs and Crystian Merrill picked up two hits.
PARSIPPANY 3, CRANFORD 1
The Red Hawks opened the North 2, Group 2 playoffs with a victory over the third-seeded Cougars. Kristy Rubino threw a four-hitter, allowing just one unearned run with nine strikeout. She was also a part of the decisive rally in the top of the sixth. Jamie Schneider led off by beating out a bunt up the third base line. Julie Gola followed with another bunt single. Schneider was thrown out at home on Crystian Merrill's single, the leftfielder making a great play to get her. But cleanup hitter Kaitlin Flanagan continued her clutch hitting by lacing a double up the right field line. She scored on Rubino's single up the middle.
HANOVER PARK 2, PARSIPPANY 0
The Red Hawks came out with another flat effort between tournament games and fell on a three-hitter by Katie Vecchione. Parsippany was no-hit until a sixth inning double by Christine Hayner. Hits by Kaitlin Flanagan and Kristy Rubino loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but they failed to score.
PEQUANNOCK 2, PARSIPPANY 1
The Red Hawks' MCT title hopes came to an end in a heartbreaking semifinal loss to Pequannock in a game played at PHS. The Golden Panthers pushed across a couple of unearned runs in the third and made them stand up after Kristy Rubino doubled in Kaitlin Flanagan in the seventh. Rubino was superb in defeat.
HOBOKEN 3, PARSIPPANY 1
A lackluster performance and cold bats led to an unexpected ouster in the North 2, Group 2 semifinals. The Red Hawks managed just two hits off Natalie Lugo and allowed the Red Wings to manufacture three runs without a hit. Kristy Rubino scattered four hits overall and fanned 12.
PARSIPPANY 1, WEST ESSEX 0
The Red Hawks closed out the season, beating their conference rival on Kristy Rubino's third no-hitter of the year. Senior Jamie Schneider drove in Dana Romano with the winning run on a one-out grounder to second in the bottom of the seventh. Romano has led off the inning with a single to right and moved to second when Mimi Ra reached on a great bunt. Stephanie Ziemski bunted the runners to second and third before Schneider's two-strike grounder. It was the last game of their high school careers for Schneider, first baseman Julie Gola and second baseman Gabi Moreira.
RED HAWKS FINISH WITH WIN
Kristy Rubino threw her third no-hitter of the season and senior Jamie Schneider drove home the winning run on the last at-bat of her career as Parsippany equalled last year's 19-victory total, 1-0, over West Essex.
Dana Romano slid under the catcher's tag on Schneider's ground ball to second to break a three-game losing streak. Parsippany settled for a third-place finish in the IHC Hills behind Morris Hills and Mount Olive.
The Red Hawks were eliminated from state tournament play with a lackluster 3-1 loss to Hoboken Tuesday. All three Hoboken runs were created without a hit. Parsippany bats stayed quiet for the third straight game.
CONGRATULATIONS AND FAREWELL, JULIE, JAMIE AND GABI
Parsippany bids goodbye to its three senior co-captains. Best of luck to Julie Gola, Gabi Moreira and Jamie Schneider as they head on to college in the fall.
Gola, a four-year varsity starter, ends a career that saw her help the team to a share of the IHC Hills Division crown as a second team all-conference pitcher in 2002. Moreira was a two-year starter while Schneider started this year after losing her junior season to mono.
They will all be missed.
RED HAWKS DROP 2-1 MCT HEARTBREAKER
The Red Hawks couldn't have come much closer, dropping a 2-1 decision to Pequannock in the Morris County Tournament semifinals this afternoon. Kristy Rubino pitched brilliantly but was victimized by a pair of unearned runs as the Golden Panthers took advantage of bunts and a passed ball.
It was tight until the end. Rubino's seventh-inning double drove in Kaitlin Flanagan with one out but she was left at second base.
It was still a great run and the Red Hawks can still concentrate on the state tournament.
RED HAWKS CRACK TOP 5 LOCAL, TOP 10 STATE
|
After knocking off two state powers within a week, the Red Hawks continued to reach new heights, climbing to No. 5 in both the Daily Record area and Star-Ledger Morris County polls and to No. 7 in the Ledger's rankings of all Group 2 teams in the state.
The DR acsent is astounding because Parsippany wasn't in the Top 10 all year until last week. But they couldn't ignore the team's stunning victories over Morris Hills and Cranford. The Red Hawks can fly even higher with an opportunity to knock off highly-ranked Pequannock in tomorrow's MCT semifinals.
Parsippany's appearance in the statewide Group 2 poll is another history-maker, especially this late in the season. The vaunted 1986 team, which won the Group 3 state championship and the Star-Ledger trophy as the best team in New Jersey, is the only other Parsippany squad to have set the bar this high.
