  2003 Game Highlights

OVERALL RECORD: 19-7, IHC HILLS RECORD 14-4

PARSIPPANY 5, PARSIPPANY HILLS 1
Kristy Rubino threw a one-hitter and Julie Gola sparked a five-run sixth-inning rally with a two-run single as the Red Hawks opened defense of their conference championship with a victory over their cross-town rivals and former JV coach Jen Schock.
Rubino struck out 12, walked one and hit one but fell behind, 1-0, when Crystal Dahlhaus scored on a passed ball.
Danielle Hayner led off the sixth by touching Julie Buechner for a double in the left-centerfield gap. Rubino beat out a bunt, attempting to sacrifice and Kaitlin Flanagan reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases for Gola. The junior first baseman ripped a two-strike pitch into left-center for the go-ahead runs. Stephanie Ziemski, Gabi Moreira and pinch hitter Lindsey Spierer followed with RBIs.
Amy Pindar had the only hit for the Vikings, who were making their return to the IHC Hills.

MORRIS HILLS 4, PARSIPPANY 0
The Red Hawks suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Morris Hills on a one-hitter by Kim Stoia. Kristy Rubino had the only PHS hit, a single. Morris Hills, which broke a three-game skid against the Red Hawks, scored four unearned runs in the third.

PARSIPPANY 10, WEEQUAHIC 0
Sophomore Crystian Merrill got her first varsity win when she combined with centerfielder Pam Breitenbach to throw a perfect game against the visiting Indians in a game played at Smith Field. Breitenbach was 4-for-5 with a solo homer and Merrill had two singles.

PARSIPPANY 2, MONTVILLE 0
Kristy Rubino struck out 17 Mustangs and allowed just three hits as the Red Hawks made their 2003 debut under the lights at Smith Field. Parsippany rallied for both of its runs in the sixth inning, thanks to the speed of Pam Breitenbach. The all state leadoff hitter, who doubled earlier in the game, got things going by running out a grounder in the hole at short. Crystian Merrill bunted her to second and Breitenbach scored when Montville catcher Jessica Ralston threw the ball into left on a steal attempt. Kaitlin Flanagan singled in Danielle Hayner for the insurance run.

PARSIPPANY 2, HANOVER PARK 1
Kristy Rubino threw a one-hitter and helped her cause with an RBI double as the Red Hawks won their third straight. After the Hornets scored an unearned run in the top of the first, Rubino's two-out hit plated Pam Breitenbach. Stephanie Ziemski came through with the game-winning hit with two outs in the fourth, driving in Kaitlin Flanagan. Rubino struck out 12 and walked two.

PARSIPPANY 4, WEST ESSEX 3
Stephanie Ziemski singled in Danielle Hayner with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Red Hawks rallied for their fourth straight win.
Ziemski, whose single beat Hanover Park in the Red Hawks' last game, came through with one out after Hayner led off with a walk, stole second and was sacrificed to third by Julie Gola.
Gola's two-run, bases loaded single in the third tied the game at 2-2 and Kristy Rubino's RBI double tied it at 3-3 in the fourth.
Rubino got the win in relief of Gola, who worked the first four and one third innings. They combined on a five-hitter.
The Lady Knights had been ranked 10th in Essex County.

PARSIPPANY 8, DOVER 1
Kaitlin Flanagan powered an eight-hit attack with a double, a bases-loaded triple and four RBI to lead the Red Hawks to their fifth straight win. Kristy Rubino and Julie Gola combined on a two-hitter, with Rubino going the first six and Gola closing out the seventh.
Crystian Merrill also had a pair of singles and Gabi Moreira had an RBI hit.

MOUNT OLIVE 8, PARSIPPANY 1
The Marauders batted around in a six-run third inning and Parsippany left 11 runners on base as the Red Hawks' five-game winning streak ended on a frigid day at Mount Olive. Stephanie Anderson held PHS to a pair of singles as the bats went as cold as the thermometer. The Red Hawks were unable to take advantage of eight walks.

PARSIPPANY 4, HANOVER PARK 0
The Red Hawks swept the season series from the Hornets behind the four-hit pitching of Kristy Rubino, who struck out 10 in a route-going effort. Outstanding defensive plays by RF Danielle Hayner and thirdbaseman Kaitlin Flanagan kept HP off the scoreboard in the first two innings before the Red Hawks struck for two runs in the third on an infield single by Gabi Moreira, an RBI single by Pam Breitenbach and a throwing error after a hard grounder to short by Crystian Merrill. The Red Hawks added two unearned runs in the sixth as Rubino and Hayner delivered key hits.

PARSIPPANY 4, PARSIPPANY HILLS 2
Kristy Rubino threw a four-hitter and the Red Hawks struck for single runs in four different innings to sweep the season series from their sister school. Danielle Hayner had the only RBI hit for Parsippany. The Vikings spoiled the shutout by scoring two unearned runs with two outs in the seventh.

PARSIPPANY 24, BOONTON 4
The Red Hawks batted around in each of the first two innings to put this one away early. Julie Gola earned her first pitching win of the season by scattering two hits and striking out five over the first four innings. Crystian Merrill closed out the fifth. Gola and Breitenbach had three hits each, including a triple and four RBI for each. Kaitlin Flanagan drove in five runs with a triple and double and Danielle Hayner had a pair of hits. Ashley Baratz and Dana Romano, called up from the JV, picked up their first varsity hits.

MORRIS HILLS 4, PARSIPPANY 1
The Red Hawks' hopes of repeating as IHC Hills champs were just about destroyed when the opportunistic Lady Knights took advantage of defensive lapses to run their conference record to 12-0. Kristy Rubino limited Morris Hills to a pair of singles but the Knights struck for an unearned run in the first and scored three times without a hit in the fourth. Pam Breitenbach, Danielle Hayner and Julie Gola had the Parsippany hits off Kim Stoia, who got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth with an inning-ending DP. The Lady Knights played an outstanding defensive game.

PARSIPPANY 6, MORRIS CATHOLIC 5
The Red Hawks rallied from a 5-0 deficit, scoring twice in the seventh to pick up the victory under the lights at Smith Field. Crystian Merrill and Kristy Rubino started the game-winning rally with singles and after Kaitlin Flanagan walked, Danielle Hayner and Julie Gola reached on errors to push across the tying and winning runs. Rubino was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI while Merrill was 2-for-4 with a double. Rubino got the win in relief of Gola. She struck out 11 in 4 1/3 innings of hitless relief.

PARSIPPANY 6, SUMMIT 0
Julie Gola went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Kristy Rubino spun a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Pam Breitenbach and Crystian Merrill had two hits each and Kaitlin Flanagan supplied a first-inning triple as Parsippany got off to a 2-0 lead.

PARSIPPANY 10, DOVER 0
Crystian Merrill went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in and Kristy Rubino and Gabi Moreira added two hits apiece as the Red Hawks beat the Tigers in a five-inning game shortened by the mercy rule. Rubino struck out 14 Tigers and gave up just one hit.
Moreira and Kaitlin Flanagan each had a pair of RBI. Merrill started the six-run third with a double and drove in the last two runs of the inning with a single.

MONTVILLE 4, PARSIPPANY 0
Katie Haskins threw a no-hitter at Parsippany as the Mustangs avenged an early-season loss and knocked the Red Hawks out of the Morris County Tournament. Kristy Rubino and Gabi Moreira were the only Hawks to reach base. Rubino walked twice, Moreira once. Montville scored single runs in four separate innings.

PARSIPPANY 19, BAYLEY-ELLARD 0
Pam Breitenbach's grand slam home run capped a nine-run first inning and Julie Gola pitched a two-hit shutout as the Red Hawks ran their Smith Field night record to 3-0. Breitenbach, Gola and Kaitlin Flanagan all went 3-for-3 and Crystian Merrill was 3-for-4. Gola struck out three and walked none and the Red Hawks played errorless ball behind her, including a great running catch in center by Breitenbach.

PARSIPPANY 1, MENDHAM 0
Kristy Rubino tossed the first no-hitter of her high school career and scored the winning run on Kaitlin Flanagan's single in the bottom of the sixth. Rubino struck out 13 Lady Minutemen in out-dueling Claire Kenny. Flanagan's clutch single followed a play in which Crystian Merrill was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Rubino's single. Merrill had doubled.

PARSIPPANY 10, WEEQUAHIC 0
Pam Breitenbach threw a no-hitter with seven K's and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Mimi Ra was 4-for-4 with a triple and six RBI. Crystian Merrill also tripled as the Red Hawks ran their record to 15-4 at the state tournament cutoff. Weequahic failed to get a hit against PHS in either game.

WEST ESSEX 2, PARSIPPANY 1
The Lady Knights won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on an overthrow. The Red Hawks scored their only run on back-to-back doubles by Crystian Merrill and Kristy Rubino.

PARSIPPANY 11, SUMMIT 4
Kristy Rubino, Danielle Hayner and Kaitlin Flanagan socked homers and Crystian Merrill went 3-for-4. Julie Gola scattered five hits, gave up one earned run and struck out five for her third win. The Red Hawks went right to work in the first on a Pam Breitenbach bunt single, followed by Merrill's RBI double and Rubino's two-run homer over the leftfielder's head.

PARSIPPANY 4, MOUNT OLIVE 0
The Red Hawks avenged their early-season loss behind a three-hitter by Kristy Rubino. Rubino pitched out of several sticky situations to record the shutout. She also contributed to the attack by plating Pam Breitenbach with triple in the first, then scoring on a sac fly by Kaitlin Flanagan. Julie Gola added an RBI single in the third and flashed a lot of leather at first base, stabbing a hot liner with runners at second and third in the fifth. Gola, Breitenbach and Rubino all had two-hit days.

MORRISTOWN 4, PARSIPPANY 3
The Red Hawks battled back from a 4-0 deficit with three in the sixth but lost for the first time at Smith Field. Kristy Rubino and Julie Gola had RBI singles in the rally. Parsippany had the tying and winning runs on in the seventh after singles by Ashley Baratz and Pam Breitenbach but couldn't deliver. The Hawks started slowly in this one. Lauren Headinger retired the first 11 batters -- none by strikeout -- before Rubino singled with two out in the fourth.

PARSIPPANY 3, MENDHAM 2
The Red Hawks locked up second place in the conference by winning on the road in a 10-inning thriller. Crystian Merrill went 4-for-4 and Kristy Rubino threw a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts as PHS surpassed its 2002 victory total and finished with a better conference mark than it had when it shared the championship the previous year. The Hawks took a 2-0 lead with unearned runs in the first two innings but Mendham tied the game with a two-run triple in the sixth. The Red Hawks left the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth but won it in the 10th when Merrill tripled up the righfield line and scored on Kaitlin Flanagan's two-out triple to the fence in left. Rubino got the Lady Minutemen out 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

PARSIPPANY 5, GOVERNOR LIVINGSTON 1
Kristy Rubino threw a one-hitter and the Red Hawks pounded out 10 hits for Parsippany's first state tournament win in 13 years. The Red Hawks broke the game open with four runs in the fourth, getting RBI hits from Pam Breitenbach, Kristy Rubino and Danielle Hayner. Gabi Moreira started the inning off with a single. Rubino struck out 12 Highlanders and walked just one.

CALDWELL 8, PARSIPPANY 1
The Red Hawks' season ended when they were one-hit by Kristen Schindler in the North II, Group 2 section semifinals. Caldwell got off to a 3-0 lead with all of its runs unearned before the Red Hawks chipped away with a run in the third on Kelly Young's safety squeeze, scoring Gabi Moreira, who had PHS' only hit with a bunt single. The Chiefs broke it open with five runs in the sixth.
