Indians
Manager - Andy Gross
Coaches - Craig Jolly, Todd Raska
Congratulations on a great season! The team finished in 2nd place overall with a final record of 22 wins and only 2 losses.
We wish the best to all eight 12-year olds (Simon, Drew, Cecil, Devin, Carlos, Brandon, Dominic and Maverick) moving on to bigger and better things and we're looking forward to the 4 returning players (James, Cameron, Aiden and Nick) starting up again next spring.
Game 24: (June 13, 2009) Indians - 14, Pirates - 2
For our final game of the year, things started off well. In the top of the 1st, our first 5 batters and 8 of the first 9 reached base and eventually scored. Simon led off with a walk, Cecil singled and Drew singled to bring in Simon. Devin singled to knock in Cecil and then Carlos walked to load the bases. Cameron hit an infield fly to the 3rd basemen before James walked to bring in Drew keeping the bases loaded.
Maverick came up next and doubled to bring home Devin and Carlos. Brandon followed by reaching on an infield throwing error that allowed Maverick and James to score. With still only one out, Simon came back up again and drove in Brandon with a grounder to short giving us an 8-run lead.
On defense, Drew pitched 3 complete innings allowing 2 hits, one run, striking out 7 and only walking 1. Cecil came in to close out the game in the 4th allowing one more run while striking out 2 of the last 3 Pirates hitters. The one run in the 4th came on a sacrifice fly to right that Aiden charged hard and caught right before it would have hit the ground, but the throw to get the runner tagging up at 3rd was not in time.
After tacking on 3 more runs in the 3rd and another 3 in the 4th, 10 Indians ended up either scoring a run, getting a hit or recording and RBI. It was a well-balanced way to end the season with each player making solid contributions to a total team effort. With this game capping a 4 game winning streak, the team ended the season with a terriffic record of 22 wins and only 2 losses. Nice job Tribe and thanks for a great season!
Game 23: (June 12, 2009) Indians - 8, Phillies - 2
In the nightcap of our double header, we played under the lights again for our next-to-the-last game of the season. Cameron and Simon handled most of the pitching duties holding the Phillies to only 2 hits and no earned runs in the game. Between the two of them, they struck out a total of 12 batters.
At the plate, all of our runs came in a strong first inning. Simon started off the game with a single, Drew reached on an error and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Devin came up third and reached base on another error driving in Simon with a grounder to 2nd. After Cecil grounded out to the pitcher knocking in Drew, Carlos walked and Cameron singled to right to drive in both Devin and Carlos. Brandon and Maverick came up and both drew walks before James drove in Cameron with a fielder's choice to load the bases.
Coming back to the top of the order, Simon walked to bring in Brandon and Drew hit a double to drive in Maverick and James. In addition to pitching well, Simon also ended up going 2 for 2 at the plate (both singles). Drew's double and Cameron's single in the 1st were our only other two hits in the game. Luckily, we reached base 11 other times on 7 walks, 3 errors and when Simon was hit by a pitch for the sixth time this season.
Game 22: (June 12, 2009) Indians - 11, Pioneer A's - 1
This was our only remaining makeup from rainouts earlier in the year and was the first game of a Friday night double header. With only two days left in the season, the Fireman's field was the only spot available, so we made the best of it. After being out 6 weeks with a broken arm, it was good to finally see Aiden back on the field. He's slowly working his way back into the swing of things, but he was able to manage a single and score a run in his first at bat.
On the mound, Nick took a turn pitching for his third appearance of the season, and Maverick made his pitching debut. The two pitched very well shutting down the A's and combining for the team's 4th no-hitter of the season.
On offense, Aiden's brother Dominic had a break-out game with a double to left and a deep fly ball over the centerfielder's head for a solo home run. Cecil also had 2 hits going 2 for 2 with a double and a triple. James, Cameron and Carlos also singled in the game and Drew added a double of his own.
