P.S. 175 Is Rich in Enrichment

P. S. 175, The Lynn Gross Discovery School is having an outstanding year. The children have been exposed to many different activities “Outside The Box” and have excelled in all of them. The excitement within the building is felt by all the students, teachers and parents which creates a wonderful learning atmosphere.

All the students participated in dance activities that were taught by resident artists from different organizations. Parents were invited to all culminating events and were very proud of the children. Our biggest achievement in dance was that the 5th grade received the Winter Finals Gold Metal in the American Ballroom Dancing Team Match. The children that represented our school danced the Tango, Swing, Fox Trot, Rumba, and Meringue. They were from all three 5th grade classes and our 5th grade self contained special education class. On June 23rd we are competing for the Grand Final Gold Metal with eight other teams. Everyone is invited at 1:00 PM to watch us dance at the World Financial Center as seen in the movie “Mad Hot Ballroom”. Just “Google”
http://www.americanballroomtheater.com   for more information. Go Violet Team!!!

One of the activities the Gifted and Talented program at P.S. 175 participates in is the
“Stock Market Game”. This year Daphne Lu, a fifth grade student, was asked to speak representing the Stock Market Game Student Teams. The keynote speaker was Chris Gardner from the movie “Pursuit of Happyness”. Daphne spoke in front of 550 people and got a standing ovation. Daphne’s mom as well as Mrs. Green, the principal, Mrs. Cooper, the assistant principal, our parent coordinator Fran Sternberg, Mrs. Bialek her Talented and Gifted Teacher and four other teachers attended the evening celebration at the Marriott Marquis.

In keeping with tradition the Gifted and Talented students are doing a program called “Constitution Works”. The 5th grade Talented and Gifted children study the US court system and Constitution. They eventually role play a case called the Government Denver Dispatch or in other words the US Government vs. National Security. Many parents attend and watch the children in the role of lawyers or Supreme Court Justices.

Thinkquest is another exciting program that we participated in this year. It is a contest where children compete against other schools to create a website. This year our theme is “Global Warming”. If you would like to visit our website please go to www.tqnyc.org,
click on 2007 entries and scroll down to Save Our Sky NYC074594. We are hoping to come in first place once again.

The 4th grade is busy rehearsing for a special Musical Event called “The New Food Guide Pyramid Musical”. The students learned about nutrition and are putting on a performance with Broadway actors on May 23, 2007, all are welcome!!

Last but definitely not least is the entire 4th and 5th grade are busy preparing a Shakespearean Festival. Different scenes of Shakespeare’s play will be performed. Children have researched Shakespearean times and are also recreating guilds for all to enjoy.

We are very excited about our accomplishments and are so proud that the parents of our students turn out for all our events.

To sum it up I would like to share an expression the children use constantly
“P. S. 175 Rules”.

Read Aloud Day 2007

Harry Potter, Princesses and Superheroes reigned supreme on Read Aloud Day. Our kids worked very hard on their posters and costumes and had lots of fun presenting their characters to the class. Ms. April, a professional storyteller, sent imaginations soaring with three wonderful tales. There was a parade of characters for the younger grades to show off their costumes and creative posters. Later in the day, parents were invited to visit their child's classroom for a special treat. Stories and favorite characters came alive in the halls of PS 175!

Principal for a Day: Judge John Pessala

Once a year a special person in the community is selected to come to our school and be our “Principal for a Day.” This person spends the day with Mrs. Green to experience a typical school day at P.S. 175. On Friday, January 26, 2007, Judge John Pessala was our guest principal. He was selected because of his remarkable and inspirational life.

Judge Pessala was an orphan born in Finland. He was adopted by a very loving family and later immigrated to the United States. Here he studied and worked hard to become a Family Court Judge in Nassau County. One of the very important aspects of his job was to do for other families what was done for him. He was given the chance to be part of a family. Once a year, on National Adoption Day, Judge Pessala performs a ceremony that legally unites orphaned children with loving adoptive parents.

Judge Pessala visited the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes with Mrs. Green and greeted the upper grades in the auditorium. At the end of the assembly, there was question and answer time. The message he brought to our children was simple: If you study and work hard, you can go on to do beautiful things for others.

The Circus Came to Town
tent
Step right up...

For several years P.S. 175 students have happily juggled their school work with mastering the fine art of circus performing. The Parents’ Association sponsors this amazing event, which is provided by the National Circus Project. Mrs. Barbara Bialek graciously coordinates the whole 5-day program and works tirelessly all week to prepare for the final show.

This year's program began with two full performances of the circus for both upper and lower grades. Over the following four days every class in the school had the opportunity to visit the performers and participate in the workshops, where students learned how to be circus performers from the pros.

On the final day, the 4th-graders put on a circus extravaganza! The rest of the school cheered, watching their fellow students juggle rings, twirl saucers, balance peacock feathers, walk on stilts and more.

National Circus Project in 2008? YOU BETCHA!

P.S. 175's Annual Halloween Party - October 31, 2006
line dance

The Parents Association of P.S. 175 held its annual Safe Halloween Party on Tuesday, October 31. It was wonderful party, with more than 660 children and parents in attendance. The kids enjoyed many fun activities, including the Halloween Spooktacular laser show; a D.J. in the cafeteria, who played all the kids' favorite songs, including hits from High School Musical, and lead them in dances and limbo; and a Halloween carnival, complete with games, prizes and haunted house, all run by student volunteers.
We would like to thank all our families for coming and celebrating with us and all the parents who volunteered and helped to make the party a success. Thanks, too, to our principal, Linda Green, our assistant principal, Patricia Cooper, and all the teachers and staff who helped us make this party possible.

Second Grade Sing-Along
winter concert

The Second Grade learned a few songs to celebrate the winter holidays of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza and invited their families to partake in the festivities. Highlights included a jazzed-up "Jingle Bells"; "Celebrate Kwanza," with its contagious beat and chorus; and "Light One Candle," Peter, Paul and Mary's rousing tribute to the Maccabbees. Jun Qin Yu, on the piano, was the wonderful opening act. Special thanks to Mrs. Zwiebel and the Second Grade teachers for all their hard work and patience.

After-School Production of "The Wizard of Oz" a Smashing Success!
WizardofOz1

On Friday, June 16th, the Parents Association's After-School Drama Club presented their second play of the school year. "The Wizard of Oz" was performed for a packed auditorium of family and friends, and was a great success. The P.A. thanks Danielle O'Keefe and Ross Eichenholz for all of their hard work in putting this wonderful play together.

The Circus Comes to P.S. 175!

During the week of May 26th through June 2nd, the National Circus Project brought the circus to P.S. 175. It started out with a day of shows and lessons for children of all ages. Greg and Ryan then focused the rest of the week on the 4th graders, who spent the time preparing for a performance at the end of the week.

The students learned how to balance, juggle, use a diablo and devil sticks, walk on stilts, perform acrobatic stunts, hula hoop, become clowns, and many other acts. It culminated in a live performance on Friday to an audience of parents, staff, and students in grades K-4.

It was a great experience and will be a lasting memory for all who were involved. Thanks go to Linda Green and Pat Cooper, and special thanks go to Barbara Bialek for coming up with this great idea and seeing it come to life.

Click here to see pictures of all the fun the students had throughout the week.

"Mad Hot Ballroom" Hits P.S. 175!
During the second half of the school year, all of our 5th graders learned how to ballroom dance with Diego Kelman Ajuz and Victoria Malvaono. At first, the children were apprehensice and didn't want to even touch a member of the opposite gender. After a few short weeks, however, they were able to master the Merengue, Tango, and many more dance routines. Six pairs of 5th grade students even attended a ballroom dance competition.

We would like to thank Diego and Victoria for coming to teach our children. The past few months have definitely been an educational and enriching experience for everyone!

Barnes & Noble Fundraiser

The Parents Association would like to thank everyone who supported this fundraiser.

As a result, P.S. 175 made over $1700.00 for our children.

    Dave Price - Principal For A Day at P.S. 175!
    DavePriceFront
    On Wednesday, April 6, Dave Price was Principal for the Day at P.S. 175. At 10:00 AM, he addressed the children from grades 2-5 in an auditorium program. He was very energetic and funny as he taught the students some life lessons about being in elementary school, interacting with others and always remembering to like themselves for who they are, not to compare themselves or imitate others. He spent an hour answering some questions from our students like: “How accurate are your weather predictions and how do you feel when you are wrong?”; “Can you name some of the devices that you use to tell the weather?”; “What was your most embarrassing moment on TV?”; and “What was your favorite subject in school?” After his auditorium program, he visited several Kindergarten and 1st Grade classes in their classrooms and answered questions from them as well. The children loved talking with Mr. Price and had a great time. We thank him for coming for our school and for being a great inspiration to all of us. Special thanks also go to Ms. Sharyn Rosen for making it possible for him to visit.

    Box Tops For Education

December was the first month of this competition, and the winning class will be announced after the new year. Thanks to this collection, our school made $74.00 in one month alone.

    We'd like to thank Vivian Schepis for this great idea and for all of her hard work. Keep on clipping!

    A Feast For The Fourth Grade
    Listening to the rhythm of Native American tribal music and wearing hand-made Iroquois headdresses, our fourth graders celebrated Thanksgiving in a big way. With the help of their teachers and parent volunteers, the students transformed the gym into a festive dining room. There were colorful paper-bag turkeys and woven placemats for everyone. This all-American Thanksgiving included delicious fresh carved turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn and apple pie, to name a few things. There was so much to be thankful for! A great time was had by all.

    Click here to see pictures from the Feast.

    THE P.S. 175 PARENTS ASSOCIATION NEEDS YOU!
    P.S. 175 has an active Parents Association that enriches the lives of our children and the programs offered by our school by providing funding and support to activities ranging from the After-School program, music program, science program, 5th grade graduation activities, speakers and workshops, newsletters, and an award-winning end-of-year publication, among other things.

    The Parents Association is self-funded. We are able to take on only projects for which we have funding. Although we certainly encourage and appreciate your participation in our major fundraising events including Parents Association membership, our candy sales, and our T-Shirt sales, there are also other ways in which you may contribute to the Parents Association to enable us to spend more money directly on programs for our children.

    The PA is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 charitable institution. Therefore, we may issue receipts to you or your employer (who may offer a matching charitable giving program) to evidence contributions of the following types of materials for which we would otherwise spend PA money:

    -Sports Equipment;
    -Arts and Crafts Supplies such as construction paper, glue, crayons, markets, scissors, and paint;
    -Printing Materials such as bond paper and printer cartridges;
    -Food and Beverages distributed at various PA events including monthly meetings and holiday parties;
    -Paper Goods such as paper towels, tissues, and holiday decorations;
    -Photographic Film

    Also, for the upcoming school year, we are organizing a raffle in which parents can participate to raise money for the school. Therefore, if you or your employer have items such as sporting events tickets, theater tickets, or circus tickets which might be offered for donation to the PA, or if you have affiliations with any local merchants (manicure/hair salons, travel agents, restaurants, etc.) who might be willing to donate services to our school, please let the PA know so that we may forge this connection for the mutual benefit of the school and the merchant.

    We look forward to an exciting new school year for our children.

    Helping Children Cope With Crisis
    What is Happening Now to the World?
    Talking to Children about a War in Iraq and Terror.

    How should we talk to our children about the world they live in and help them cope with war and terror? Since 9/11, we have been thrust into a global climate of heated politics, anger, fear, and violence. Our children are trying to make sense of a world where war with Iraq is on the horizon, the war with terror goes on, and North Korea is presenting an increasingly threatening face to the rest of world. Headlines and the strident 24-hour-television coverage deliver pro- and anti-war messages, dire threats and words of patience, terror alerts and loud proclamations of pro- and anti-U. S. policy.

    What do we tell children about the world they live in? How do we respond to their questions about their safety, the safety of others, the morality of war, and the anger and violence they witness on the news?

    Attention Web Shoppers...
    Schoolpop Home
    Do you shop on the Internet? Are names like Amazon, GAP, L.L. Bean, Lands' End, and Toys-R-Us familiar to you? If your answer is YES, then please read this!

    PS 175 The Lynn Gross Discovery School now has an Internet Shopping Portal to hundreds of web merchants. Each time anyone shops on the Internet starting at our shopping portal, a percentage of all purchases is donated to our school's Parents Association.

    The program is simple - the next time you sit down to shop on the web, visit www.schoolpop.com first, and then follow the simple instructions. Shopping on the Internet will be exactly the same -- the same selection, the same prices and the same guarantees -- just as if you had gone directly to a merchant's web site. The big difference will be that you will be raising money for our school while you shop!

    SchoolPop Back to School PromoIt costs nothing to participate. www.schoolpop.com will keep track of all purchases credited to The PS 175 Lynn Gross Discovery School and send us a check quarterly. There is no cap on how much our school can receive, and this program generates donations year round!

    Thanks for your help and good shopping!
